Clinton Supporter

In two different focus groups of Clinton-supporting Nevada women -- married and unmarried -- conducted immediately after Gov. Sarah Palin's Wednesday night speech to the Republican National Convention, a few common reactions quickly took shape.

First, women in both groups were impressed with Palin's speaking ability and poise. But they were hardly convinced that she was qualified to be vice president, or that she truly represented the "change" they were looking for, especially in light of what was deemed an overly harsh "sarcasm" pervading her address.

The (mostly) anonymous proceedings were webcast live to reporters, who were told in a press release that the Nevada focus groups would include "some former Hillary Clinton supporters who are now undecided or are weak supporters of Barack Obama or John McCain." No party identification was made available, though the approximately two dozen women were reportedly between 30 and 60 years old.

In the "married" group, when one attendee kicked off the discussion by saying "she's a good speaker, and a crowd pleaser," the rest of the room articulated their agreement. "I didn't expect to be as impressed as I was," said another respondent. But then another woman added: "Once she started mudslinging, I thought, it's the same old crap as other politicians. McCain used her to get the women's vote. And she's using McCain."

"Thank you," another woman responded. "That really upset me; there was no need for that. It was snippy."

The unmarried group also voiced similar objections to the harsh, partisan edge of Palin's remarks. "I'm not impressed with her at all as a person," one said, citing her "finger pointing" and general sarcasm after the group had generally agreed that she was a talented public speaker.

Still not all focus group members thought Palin came off too harsh. "She didn't seem very aggressive to me at all," said one unmarried participant.

But in both groups, narrow majorities said they held a more negative view of Palin after her speech. "She comes off pretty cutthroat," said one.

On other issues, women in both groups said they wanted to hear more of Palin's own policy views, outside the realm of energy. Education, heath care, the economy and Iraq were all cited as areas in which women were hungry for more information -- especially in light of McCain's age. "I think America is concerned, because of McCain's age, that we're gonna have a female president who's maybe inexperienced. The nation needs to know what her issues are," said one married respondent, which prompted another to add: "I don't think she's got what it takes." An unmarried participant said she had yet to hear enough "in regards to her personal views, which could be implicated on us if McCain was to die."

When prompted to respond to Palin's steadfast opposition to abortion -- even in cases of rape or incest -- no woman in either group stepped forward to defend the Alaskan Republican. "I don't dig that," said one married woman, matter of factly.

But there were other points on which the participants expressed pride in Palin's achievement. "She earned what she's got -- as far as not marrying into it. I like that about her," said one married respondent. "Let's hope she has a good showing," said another who had expressed disappointment over Palin's abortion views.

The groups -- which were coordinated by Anna Greenberg and Stan Greenberg of Greenberg, Quinlan, Rosner Research -- were commissioned by the Women's Voices/Women Vote Action Fund, which describes itself as "dedicated to encouraging unmarried women to bring their voices to our nation's political conversation and to advocate for policies important to them."

Sarah will have to answer a lot of questions soon! Like if you are a champion for special needs children why would you slash their budget to support them by 62%. If you did not want to be questioned about you stance of birth control or choice for woman you should have not placed you 17 year old daughter on stage holding the baby with a large blanket covering up her pregnancy! What are plans for the economy, health care, education and the war in IRAQ? So far all I know is she has a beautiful family but that does not quaiify her to be president of the United States!

Maybe not so soon. Team McCain has indicated that Gov. Palin will spend more than 80% of the rest of the campaign fundraising (while McCain is taking the public financing check, that does not preclude money being raised for what is called the "McCain-Palin Compliance Fund", which is essentially money raised for RNC for this election cycle).

That means canned audiences with no hostile questions.

I was wondering what Bush was gonna do with his bubble now that he no longer needs it.

She was shrill, empty, and mean-spirited. Obviously a BushCo written speech. She's like Bush in a dress. All his "governor's experience" didn't do him much good obviously, the speakers yesterday acted like he didn't even exist, LOL!!

She will ONLY appeal to the dumbasses who gave us BushCo.

Unfortunately, there were enough of them to give us BushCo x 2. And I don't think the "education level" of the American voting public has gone up in the last 8 years.

You know, I would looooooovvvvvveeee to come face to face with Dubya and ask him "How's that No Child Left Behind working out for ya?".

All it does is make the teachers feel like they are being held under the microscope (granted, some do need to be) and in jeopardy of losing their jobs because the parents are not doing their part in the education of their children.

I work in a predominately Hispanic school district where the large majority are illegals. The parents of these children are not at all interested in pulling their weight in this and their discipline of their children is severely lacking. So, no matter how hard the teacher works to get these children educated, it is impossible without the cooperation and backing of the parents.

I just heard on CNN that she cut funding for support for children and familes with special needs in Alaska by 62%.Is that true? Does anyone have more information on this? That would make her pledge last night that in her, families with special needs would have a "friend and advocate in the White House" the ultimate, disgusting, pander.

On the surface I was impressed with her speaking ability. I think perhaps because I didn't know what to expect I was pleasantly surprised. However, the substance of her speech left me wanting.

She didn't cover any policy issues, didn't impart any of her belief's or values and I still know nothing more about her than what I've learned over the course of the last 6 days.

I know she compares herself to a Pit Bull. Not a great anaology when I wouldn't trust a pit bull around me family.

I know that she's sarcastic and can deliver a good one-liner

I know that she feels she should be treated differently by the media because she's a woman apparently.

and I know that she wants her daughter's pregnancy to be off limits to the media, all while parading her around like a show pony on stage.

not a good impression I'd say.

not to mention the parading of soldier son who's shipping out to Iraq.

I'm sorry family is either out of bounds or up for discussion....and if it's to be discussion then it's all family not just the one's we'd prefer the focus on

I will be honest I had fears about electing a white man to that office and for the past 8 years my fears came true, now I have a fear with putting another white man in that office that is just like the last one and a woman that is pro life in the invent of incest and rape is involved I would not even be allowed to get an abortion and I would have to carry the child and the memories that comes alone with that brutal attack ( that what Mayor Palin views are on abortions)after the last 8 years I would vote for a Smart Black Man and it is really sad that prejudice is still running rampet in this country and people would rather rick the chance again and vote for a white man that you know has been stuck to bush rather than a Black man, and all I can say to the so call religious people out there may God have mercy on your soul because if you are a real child of God you should not feel any prejudice against anyone or anything and after the last 8 years you really shouldn't have a hard time voting for CHANCE.

My point is, I want to feel hopeful, not sarcastic. I want to listen to a soaring voice that inspires me, not this shrill sarcastic tone coming from McCain and now Palin. Maybe some women will vote for him because they relate to her (my youngest sister is evangelical, and she is leaning to Palin, not McCain) but that sarcastic tone she set last night just turned the three of my sisters, an me, OFF.

I am one of the women who (I think) McCain is trying to reach. I am from the Appalachian Mountains, the Scots Irish type who are a hard nut to crack for Obama. When my four sisters and I talked about it, we probably did vote for Hillary because she's a woman, as much as other reasons.

I'm torn, because I'd really like to vote for a woman. I admire McCain for taking a chance, but I have to ask myself if her sarcasm is what I want to see and hear for the next four years? I have grown to hate the sound of Bush's voice. So do I need the sound of her voice the next four years? And even if this risky decision is paying off for McCain, what other risky chances will McCain take, which will not work out as well?

I will admit, that we have unspoken fears about electing a black man to that office, and if he wasn't black, or if he'd served in the armed services, I am one who believe he'd be way ahead in this race. But if we don't elect Obama, who else is there who could possibly be better, who will come along? I worry about that. I don't worry about another good woman coming along.

im glad you are being objective in your decision

heres a little nugget. palin said 'she(her daughter) made a DECISION (choice) that must be respected'

so, respect my daughters right to choose, and elect me, so your family doesnt have that same option...the hypocritical thought process makes my heads spin.

hope you come around! :)

Thank you for the insight to your personal deliberations. Your honesty is refreshing and I like knowing you THINK about your choices while being genuine enough to recognize your fears. I really hope you choose to vote the Democratic ticket. Our country is falling apart before our eyes. We're being told everything is fine but we see every day that it is not.

Anyway, keep up the good work.

Maggy,

Thanks for the budget info. That is a disgrace and a tragedy. Talk about pandering. Billions in surplus, but she can't find the dollars to support disabled kids. Enough in the budget to hand out checks to secure her popularity, however. Yuck, yuck, yuck.

I'm a woman in the "Hilary supporter's" age group. I feel the same way about women who would cast their vote simply based on gender as I do about any other sort of identity politics. It makes a mockery of our system. Hilary would be ashamed at these women who are willing to turn back all the accomplishments of others who fought for years for women's rights simply to put a woman in office whose social views are a throwback to a time when women were nothing more than the means of producing progeny. (Charlie Black, McCain's adviser, said it best: "She'll be learning national security at the feet of the master." Lucky girl. Not every woman is allowed to grovel at the "feet of the master." ). She is the modern-day version of Phyllis Schlafley and she is the worst thing that could happen to women in terms of policy. Women who choose to vote for her because of her gender, besides being horribly ill-informed, are committing the ultimate form of 'cutting off their noses to spite their faces.' Just wish they didn't have the power to cut off the rest of ours, as well.

She was a turn off.......And where's the beef? I don't want to hear any more mud slinging, I am sick of it,.

She is a Rove/Bushie and McCain's pick of her proves he has NO CONTROL of his own campaign

His new slogan is

POLITICS FIRST, COUNTRY LAST

Yup. Like some of us have always said she's a flop among anyone who isn't a hardcore Republican.

People can keep saying this was a great speech as much as they want.

But the point remains: Palin didn't pick up a single new vote for McCain. That's a flop. And the governor probably hardened the views of not only those who were going to vote against McCain, but Independents who are SICK of the Republican Party.

McCain/Palin's gonna lose. And lose big come November.

SARAH PALIN SLASHED SPECIAL NEEDS EDUCATION BY 62%

Gov. Sarah Palin, it is worth noting, oversees the budget for the Department of
Education and Early Development Special Schools in Alaska.

These funds provide supplementary educational services to students
with severe disabling conditions and the Alaska Challenge Youth
Academy. The resident school where the child would normally be placed
does not have the resources to provide an adequate educational
program. Without the supplementary services the child's needs would
not be met by the local school district in most cases.
The following programs are included within this component:
Special Education Service Agency (SESA)

The Annual budget for 2007, which preceded Gov. Palin was $8,265,300.

http://www.gov.state.ak.us/omb/07_OMB/budget/EED/comp2735.pdf

The Annual budget for 2008, enacted by Gov. Palin is $3,156,000.

http://www.gov.state.ak.us/omb/08_OMB/budget/EED/comp2735.pdf

The Annual budget for 2009, enacted by Gov. Palin is $3,156,000.

http://www.gov.state.ak.us/omb/09_omb/budget/EED/comp2735.pdf

This is a cut in special needs services to children in Alaska of
5,109,300 , or 62%.

Did 62% of all of the special needs children in Alaska stop having
needs once Gov. Palin took office?
If you ask me, a 62% cut in these funds, which we all know are so
desperately scarce, and for which we all have to fight tooth and nail
for our children, is a disgrace.

Just a thought...

During Gov. Palin's speech last night she told families with special needs children "you'll have an advocate in the White House if I'm elected" or words to that effect. These facts show that Palin is just like every other Republican and that she is NO advocate worth having for these families.
