Clinton Supporter

In two different focus groups of Clinton-supporting Nevada women -- married and unmarried -- conducted immediately after Gov. Sarah Palin's Wednesday night speech to the Republican National Convention, a few common reactions quickly took shape.

First, women in both groups were impressed with Palin's speaking ability and poise. But they were hardly convinced that she was qualified to be vice president, or that she truly represented the "change" they were looking for, especially in light of what was deemed an overly harsh "sarcasm" pervading her address.

The (mostly) anonymous proceedings were webcast live to reporters, who were told in a press release that the Nevada focus groups would include "some former Hillary Clinton supporters who are now undecided or are weak supporters of Barack Obama or John McCain." No party identification was made available, though the approximately two dozen women were reportedly between 30 and 60 years old.

In the "married" group, when one attendee kicked off the discussion by saying "she's a good speaker, and a crowd pleaser," the rest of the room articulated their agreement. "I didn't expect to be as impressed as I was," said another respondent. But then another woman added: "Once she started mudslinging, I thought, it's the same old crap as other politicians. McCain used her to get the women's vote. And she's using McCain."

"Thank you," another woman responded. "That really upset me; there was no need for that. It was snippy."

The unmarried group also voiced similar objections to the harsh, partisan edge of Palin's remarks. "I'm not impressed with her at all as a person," one said, citing her "finger pointing" and general sarcasm after the group had generally agreed that she was a talented public speaker.

Still not all focus group members thought Palin came off too harsh. "She didn't seem very aggressive to me at all," said one unmarried participant.

But in both groups, narrow majorities said they held a more negative view of Palin after her speech. "She comes off pretty cutthroat," said one.

On other issues, women in both groups said they wanted to hear more of Palin's own policy views, outside the realm of energy. Education, heath care, the economy and Iraq were all cited as areas in which women were hungry for more information -- especially in light of McCain's age. "I think America is concerned, because of McCain's age, that we're gonna have a female president who's maybe inexperienced. The nation needs to know what her issues are," said one married respondent, which prompted another to add: "I don't think she's got what it takes." An unmarried participant said she had yet to hear enough "in regards to her personal views, which could be implicated on us if McCain was to die."

When prompted to respond to Palin's steadfast opposition to abortion -- even in cases of rape or incest -- no woman in either group stepped forward to defend the Alaskan Republican. "I don't dig that," said one married woman, matter of factly.

But there were other points on which the participants expressed pride in Palin's achievement. "She earned what she's got -- as far as not marrying into it. I like that about her," said one married respondent. "Let's hope she has a good showing," said another who had expressed disappointment over Palin's abortion views.

The groups -- which were coordinated by Anna Greenberg and Stan Greenberg of Greenberg, Quinlan, Rosner Research -- were commissioned by the Women's Voices/Women Vote Action Fund, which describes itself as "dedicated to encouraging unmarried women to bring their voices to our nation's political conversation and to advocate for policies important to them."

What really concerns me is all these people, including people in the focus groups above, who say they don't know, or haven't heard anything about Palin's positions on other issues. I know that not everyone reads HuffPo but, for crying out loud, the Palin media frenzy has been running non-stop since last Friday! If these people really wanted to know more about Palin, and these people claim they do, what is so FREAKIN' difficult about taking the initiative to do a little research, spend a little time online? I mean, we're talking 10-20 minutes of your time to find out that she's virulently anti-choice, anti-environment, doesn't believe in global warming, believes creationism should be taught in schools, believes God supports oil pipelines, believes the war in Iraq is God's will, is anti-contraception and against sex education and pregnancy prevention efforts for teens, and on and on!

Come on people! Step up! Accept some responsibillity! We're talking about the future of this country and whether we want to keep being led down the path to oblivion by rightwing lunatics or take advantage of another direction and save ourselves. Please!

She is just as dangerous as her moose shooting rifle in the hands of idiots. They loaded her up last night with a Rovian pre-packaged speech and started shooting and spewing their lies and sarcasm. I am convinced she was chosen as a triple threat sort of process. First, to stir their base. Secondly, their counter attack in a skirt, in hopes of forcing JB to tone down his attacks, because we all know the pit bull within him when it comes to the issues. He's the best. Thirdly, to peel if not many a few of Hillary supporters, who are still upset..

This woman is dangerous in the worst kind of way. We have got to step it up.

BTW, where the h3ll is Hillary?

I don't know where Hillary is, but she needs to really step up in response to this hateful speech. If Hillary had won the nomination, I would have voted for her. But she did not and that is absolutely no reason to vote for McCain/Palin. They do not represent the things I deem important for this country.

We watched the speech on PBS, then switched over to MSNBC for commentary.

They were bitter and glum.

That speech had so much that just wasn't true. They didn't even make an attempt at telling the truth last night. I find it depressing that we saw the same old politics and that in the US when a politician fabricates enough we actually believe them. I am bitter and glum because so much of this country doesn't see how McCain and Palin are just more Bush. These last eight years have been bad. The thought of 4 more is just plain depressing. At the same time, I dont't think they'll get by with it this time. People noticed that while the speech was well delivered it contained no answers about the economy, the war and the mess Bush has gotten us into. You can't fool the country again.

The very first thing that I noted with Sarah Palin when she was making her speech,
was the finger pointing, and head bobbing, it almost looked like she had studied
Hillary.

What really amazed me was her constant attack on Barack and Joe Biden, she did
not come out and address the real issues that are bringing America and its people
to a standstill!

It was almost like this was a deliberate way for her to dodge the real issues. It was simply BASH,
BASH OBAMA, BASH BIDEN! I HOPE THAT SHE, ALONG WITH ALL THE OTHER BASHERS OF
LAST NIGHT'S SPEECHES, REALIZE THAT PAYBACK CAN BE A REAL B****!

WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME THAT SARAH PALIN MET WITH AND NEGOTIATED WITH FOREIGN LEADERS?

WHAT DID SHE DO TO ADDRESS THE RECENT WAR BETWEEN RUSSIA AND GEORGIA, AFTER ALL, RUSSIA IS HER NEXT DOOR NEIGHBOUR, (and according to Cindy McCain, Sarah has foreign policy experience, because geographically, Alaska is next door to Russia) WHAT DID SHE DO TO END THIS WAR?

WHY IS SHE PREACHING ABSTINANCY ONLY, TO UNMARRIED WOMEN OF CHILD BEARING AGE
WHEN SHE COULD NOT GET HER OWN 17 YEAR OLD TO ABSTAIN? (I am not criticizing Bristol, I
am criticizing her Mother)

HOW MANY PEOPLE HAS SARAH PALIN REALLY FIRED, BECAUSE THEY DID NOT AGREE WITH
HER?

What legislation has she written (none). Did she lie about Obama not writing any legislation - YES.

ENOUGH!

Even though I do not agree with her views I am having a very hard time understand why ANY woman of ANY religion even if you are Pro Life would not allow a woman to get an abortion because of incest or rape that almost sound barberick to me and sick why would a woman want to carry anything that was given out of a brutal attack I am almost in tears because its sad when some woman are really not understanding all that they would be getting from her its like she's not a woman or don't have feelings of a woman, its OK to be pro life but there should be a line drawn some where.

I would like to hear her stand on the Morning After Pill. I want to know if she would also deny that when a rape victim goes to the ER for treatment after being raped. A lot of pro lifers oppose the use of the drug. I want to hear from her what her stand on this is (if anyone knows give me the link). Because that is just completely inhumane.

WOW is all I can say. But that ain't a good WOW. I flipped on a channel and caught the last ten minutes and talk about an insult. Seems if we wait for Women's Issues--ladies, it won't come from Palin. I've worked in corporate america for 30 years and I can tell you Palin is out for Palin.

Can you believe that this woman will likely be President before Hillary?

Not to mention that she's now a bigger player in the Republican party that Rudy G!

The fight is on. Folks love people they'd like to have a beer with as their leader instead of a thinking man (woman).

The fight is on.

Yes I agree, it is time for Barack and Joe to let the ball fly!

Earlier in the day yesterday, a woman spoke before the convention (a nobody) who said she had always been a registered Republican but registered Democrat for the primaries because she strongly supported Hillary (read - wanted a woman in the White House - any woman would do, no matter the party or no matter the politics of said candidate). But now she was returning to the Republican party because there is still a woman to vote for this year to get into the White House.

This lady just outed every PUMA - letting us know that they have, in fact, been Republicans all along.

Come on, PUMAann - where are you? You need to join this conversation, but you better wear a good coat of armor because you are going get blasted if you come here again.

Ok. I was giving you people the benefit of the doubt. But now I do believe that you just wont vote for Obama because of the tent of his skin. This woman is in no way qualified to be President of the United States! She has not been a champion of woman's rights (believes in unequal pay for herself/doesnt believe in the right to choose). She belittles COMMUNITY ORGANIZERS!!! So she sold a jet on ebay. AND? She is in NO COMPARISON to Senator Biden, who is chair of Foreign Relations Committee, double-majored in history and political science at the University of Delaware in in 1964 when Palin WAS BORN, and been on the campaign trail LONGER than she was governor. Most of that time she was killing deer and firing troopers. THE WOMAN JUST RECEIVED HER PASSPORT LAST YEAR! How dare you compare a PTA President to a CIVIL RIGHTS LAWYER, who gave up wealth to serve people in poverty???? How does she compare to a HARVARD LAW GRADUATE!? Please tell me how???

It is appalling, and it is truly sad that our children will reap the consequences of your stupidity, that you would let your personal prejudices pulverize the future of this country. Or maybe it's your vehement desire to vote for a vagina.

"Our national leaders are sending them out on a task that is from God," -Sarah Palin

If McCain wins this election it will be largely because of this woman. And she will no doubt be Hillary's competition in 2012 as McCain won't likely run for a second term. By that time she will have had 4 years as VP. She will be very hard to beat.

Don't count on it. She is probably making her hit list of Hillary points as you read this. Notice that she kept referring to Obama as her opponent last night. She has already dismissed McCain. Think she enjoys a challenge. Bet she can't wait to meet Bubba.

The PUMA people don't care what issues the candidate supports, they just want to vote for a woman regardless of her positions and regardless if it is to their detriment. They have no credibility.

As a guy, I would like to hear more honest opinions from women. It is nice to hear that just because there is a woman on the ticket, votes aren't already cast in favor. If she is elected, the right to choose is GONE! I don't think that is even a question.

I mean, I do know what women feel and what its like to be a woman because I sleep next to one every night.

"The President cannot make abortion illegal, no matter what Obama says." Really? With the justices of the Supreme Court in favor of Roe on the high end of the age bracket, I think you are flat wrong! Think about it: once a President McCain/Palin appoints one or more replacement justices, Roe will fall for a generation! Because these are LIFETIME appointments. You make a mistake about a president, you may be waiting 40 years to correct his/her mistake in the Supreme Court!

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:16 PM on 09/04/2008

YOu are absolutely right, it is not the President that can make it illegal

However, the Supreme Court is made up of majority of Republican appointees and the Dem appointees are outnumbered. Right now, the Roe vs Wade is hanging on by a thread. If the Pugs get in again, the Supreme Court, by way of a majority, will get rid of it altogether.

By voting Obama in as Prez will be a shift in the majority/minority on the Supreme Court the Roe vs Wade will remain intact.

I'm a women, and she is against all the issues I care about, in no particular order:

Health Care for everyone
Improving our Economy
Improving America's Infrastructure
Ending our wars
Gay marriage
Job creation
Protecting the Environment

So, I don't care that she is a women, I would rather rot in hell for eternity before I'd cast a vote for Jmac and pit bull.

My sentiments exactly. Just because she is a woman does not means she stands for what I believe in. As terrible as Bush was for this country during the past 8 years, the election of McCain/Palin will be far worse.

The Obama campaign really needs to bring Hillary back into the game to tell people directly that Palin does not hold the same interests as the majority of American women. That, coupled with Biden making her look like a fool at the debate should effectively erase any headway McCain may have made with independents and disaffected Democrats.
