I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Clinton Supporter

In two different focus groups of Clinton-supporting Nevada women -- married and unmarried -- conducted immediately after Gov. Sarah Palin's Wednesday night speech to the Republican National Convention, a few common reactions quickly took shape.

First, women in both groups were impressed with Palin's speaking ability and poise. But they were hardly convinced that she was qualified to be vice president, or that she truly represented the "change" they were looking for, especially in light of what was deemed an overly harsh "sarcasm" pervading her address.

The (mostly) anonymous proceedings were webcast live to reporters, who were told in a press release that the Nevada focus groups would include "some former Hillary Clinton supporters who are now undecided or are weak supporters of Barack Obama or John McCain." No party identification was made available, though the approximately two dozen women were reportedly between 30 and 60 years old.

In the "married" group, when one attendee kicked off the discussion by saying "she's a good speaker, and a crowd pleaser," the rest of the room articulated their agreement. "I didn't expect to be as impressed as I was," said another respondent. But then another woman added: "Once she started mudslinging, I thought, it's the same old crap as other politicians. McCain used her to get the women's vote. And she's using McCain."

"Thank you," another woman responded. "That really upset me; there was no need for that. It was snippy."

The unmarried group also voiced similar objections to the harsh, partisan edge of Palin's remarks. "I'm not impressed with her at all as a person," one said, citing her "finger pointing" and general sarcasm after the group had generally agreed that she was a talented public speaker.

Still not all focus group members thought Palin came off too harsh. "She didn't seem very aggressive to me at all," said one unmarried participant.

But in both groups, narrow majorities said they held a more negative view of Palin after her speech. "She comes off pretty cutthroat," said one.

On other issues, women in both groups said they wanted to hear more of Palin's own policy views, outside the realm of energy. Education, heath care, the economy and Iraq were all cited as areas in which women were hungry for more information -- especially in light of McCain's age. "I think America is concerned, because of McCain's age, that we're gonna have a female president who's maybe inexperienced. The nation needs to know what her issues are," said one married respondent, which prompted another to add: "I don't think she's got what it takes." An unmarried participant said she had yet to hear enough "in regards to her personal views, which could be implicated on us if McCain was to die."

When prompted to respond to Palin's steadfast opposition to abortion -- even in cases of rape or incest -- no woman in either group stepped forward to defend the Alaskan Republican. "I don't dig that," said one married woman, matter of factly.

But there were other points on which the participants expressed pride in Palin's achievement. "She earned what she's got -- as far as not marrying into it. I like that about her," said one married respondent. "Let's hope she has a good showing," said another who had expressed disappointment over Palin's abortion views.

The groups -- which were coordinated by Anna Greenberg and Stan Greenberg of Greenberg, Quinlan, Rosner Research -- were commissioned by the Women's Voices/Women Vote Action Fund, which describes itself as "dedicated to encouraging unmarried women to bring their voices to our nation's political conversation and to advocate for policies important to them."

Apparently all the other potential Rep VP contenders -- Pawlenty, Lieberman, Ridge, Romney, Huckabee are ready to talk to the press, but Palin isn't.

How can she be ready to be President if she isn't even ready to answer questions form the press?

Another mud throw that just slid off.

“and he’s worried someone won’t read them his rights.”

YUP, Gov Palin.

I am too!

Try and imagine Sarah, that Track is taken and held prisoner at a place like Guantánamo, he is considered an enemy combatant, but he has no rights to disprove this. Tortured under interrogation. Without international human rights law to protect him. Or allow him the right to protest wrongful imprisonment, that’s habeas corpus (what u mocked Sarah). After 61/2 years he is released. What impact will the injustice of Track’s, wrongful imprisonment have on family, friends and relatives? Injustice is a passionate emotion we can all relate too, regardless of race or creed.

Probably nothing has done more to tarnish America’s reputation in this area than the current administration's decision to combat terrorism without regard to US obligations under international human rights law.

Gov Palin, your mocking of human rights and the rule of law is alarming.

Right on target! That statement and the one she made about Sen. O's "healing the world" were the most reprehensible to me. She needs to be shipped back to the AIP on the first moose smoking!

If Track is captured by Islamists he'll be tortured and beheaded, regardless of Geneva or Gitmo or the compassion of Obama.

You want a view from Britain? She's a talking parrot. But her speech writer was pretty good. Overall, she expressed no guilt for her part in the shambles of the Bush years - I mean, she has been a Republican supporter during that time, hasn't she? In my opinion, Palin had nothing positive or fresh to say - it was just the same old speech coming out of a different mouth.

If u are going to throw something u want it to hit, not plop and slide off.

“seem to look down on that experience, let me explain to them what the job involves”

YUP, I think u ‘jumped the gun” on this one Gov Palin. Don’t u have to sure of your target before you shoot?

Obama wasn’t belittling your experience as Mayor in Wasilla. He was comparing the executive experience between you two. Contrasting the size (constituents and budgets). He has a legitimate argument.
Mr. Giuliani said, “Barack Obama has never led anything, nothing, nada,”
But he has.
Obama for America is the largest organization Obama has ever run.
Obama runs a tight ship with a drama-free campaign. Can u say the same Gov Palin?

Obama was drawing a comparison with his executive experience of leading a very successful campaign. Millions of constituents, payrolls, budget, scheduling over a 50 state strategy. His community organization experience (that u Sarah derided) has helped develop the foundation of his pragmatic, political style.

Obama’s early decision to hire political professional campaign operatives rather than surround himself with capitulators has been an unexpected success for its efficient functionality.

Palin has cited her mayoral work as a central part of her qualification to serve as governor. she made the job sound like no big deal: "It's not rocket science. It's $6 million and 53 employees."

I have always been for Obama but would have switched to Hillary on her win. Hillary, please come out swinging. This woman is unpalatable.

By referring to herself as a pit bull with lipstick last night, Sarah Palin insulted every woman who has preceded her in a working environment. Those of us who have tapped on the glass ceiling have had to fight against being referred to as a bitch, which is the familiar term for a female canine.

With an NFL quarterback serving prison time for abusing pit bulls, the analogy is doubly insulting.

America needs women who will build on the progress of women in the past 88 years. We need a leader, not a pack animal.

Simply putting a woman on the ticket to attract Hillary supporters will not attract this Hillary voter. It 's just a simple choice by a simple minded group. I admire Governor Palin for her accomplishments but do not agree with her views.

Part of the reasoning for choosing her is that the Republican power brokers think of Palin as expendable. If McCain loses, he most likely won't run again due to age and Palin can be blamed.

I've been a chamber of commerce president for our tiny town of 1,200 and am expecting a call any day from McCain for the Secretary of Commerce position. Call me Mac.

Two things, if you are considering her as the potential President because of the age of the presidential candidate, before the election, there is a problem, first and foremost.

Secondly, she read a speech written by someone else, who wanted to be a sportscaster before she wanted to be a councilwoman, of course she can read. Is style over substance a standard we want to promote when it comes to a woman? She was a Republican delivery device, nothing more.

I actually think the focus groups gave very fair assessments. After watching the speech myself... I felt the gloves were off... and I'd feel no sympathy for this woman if Joe Biden ripped her to shred in the debates. Let's see how tough she really is.

She better get a whole lot of tutoring before that debate. Biden won't have to rip her to shreds. He is a policy Wonk to the 100th power. Unlike McCain Biden knows what he voted for and against and can give it to you chapter a verse.

“What I’m most proud of in my entire career is the Violence Against Women Act. It showed we can change people’s lives, but the change is always one person at a time. There are many more laws and attitudes that need changing so women are treated with equal opportunities at work, in the classroom, and in our health care system.”

I don't want Biden to go easy just because she's a woman. She chose to be in this arena, she mocked Hillary as a whiner, she was the pitbull with lipstick, so she should be able to handle what she dishes out. Call her to task!!!!!

The big problem will be keeping Biden in line. She is going to push every button; that sarcasm comes naturally or she wouldn't have been able to deliver the words so well.

So far all we know about Palin's capabilities is that she can get through a snarky speech written by someone else. I suppose that's more than you can say for Bush. But what about when she goes from being a token to being potentially the next president?

I watched Palin for ten minutes then switched channels. This is someone without substance and who clearly is energised by negative realities. What I do find funny however is the fact that the Republicans are running against themselves and in order to do this they have to criticize the opposoition and cloud the fact that they are the party in power, that somehow they want Americans to forget that they are the incumbent and they've run things into the ground. Too much to ask for, but they really ought to sit this one out and hand things over to the Democrats.

Do you really think that if Obama had chosen a woman that McCain would have followed suite? Absolutely not! He would have not taken the risk. The choice of Palin has accurately been described as a "Hail Mary pass," which indeed it was. It was necessitated by Obama not having taken the riskier move. Nothing happens in a bubble.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:21 AM on 09/04/2008

You must be kidding right. I hope you don't think that McCain and his team was more than ready to viciously attack Hillary once she was on the ticket. They had so much stuff they were ready to use against her and Bill. They were hoping even praying that she would be on the ticket.

Also don't think that Palin would be on this ticket had she been a man. This is a play at women they are hoping are too naive to see through this. And women should be insulted. All you hear about are "downscale" women (really they mean uneducated - because they believe that if you didn't go to school you will fall for anything) and "working" women as if they really care about the working woman. John McCain doesn't appreciate "working" women. So don't be stupid and fall for the act. This is a stunt. Palin can't compete with Hillary whether Hillary is on the ticket or not. You saw Hillary's speech last week - Palin was in no way a threat to her or even comparable to her. Hillary is full of substance.

I was very disappointed with her speech. I was looking for specific and substance and all she did was attack, attack, attack. She was demeaning and abrasive. I really was hoping she would talk about the issue and she didn't.
