The Hill:

Georgia Republican Rep. Lynn Westmoreland used the racially-tinged term "uppity" to describe Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama Thursday.

Westmoreland was discussing vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin's speech with reporters outside the House chamber and was asked to compare her with Michelle Obama.

"Just from what little I've seen of her and Mr. Obama, Sen. Obama, they're a member of an elitist-class individual that thinks that they're uppity," Westmoreland said.

Asked to clarify that he used the word "uppity," Westmoreland said, "Uppity, yeah."

I think we'll be hearing many comments like the one Mr. Westmoreland made over the next eight years. Hearing that kind of drivel might be a small price for progress, but we don't have to listen.

Of course we have to listen... so we can confront & reject hatred and prejudice loudly, publicly and unapologetically.

This is truly sad. As long as there are people spewing this garbage we can never move forward. Just when you think we are, along comes someone, by the way who is elected to represent and help people say something like this. I shouldn't act like I am suprised, I was just hoping that maybe, some how we could get past a persons color and judge them by his or her actions and positions on issues that matter to Americans, but I guess I was wrong.

Yes, uppity indeed. Bi-racial kid, brought up by single mother on small income - well if this is not elitist I don't know what is.

That Retardican Senator was not able to produce a coherent sentence when describing Obama's 'uppityness'.

At last. We're seeing what is the BIG fear of the Doughboy Republican politicians. Racism, always a strong undercurrent of the "modern" Republican party, is finally climbing out into public view. Thank you, Westmoreland. We know the enemy, and you are doomed.

Yawn! This is getting old. Republicans back at race-baiting, again. They really lack any new material.

It doesn't at all surprise, in view of the fact that the Republican Party is the party of racism -- haven for white supremacists and other groups who base their hatreds on imaginary differences.

Akin is their disparagement of community organizers: they are above -- elitist -- working in the community for the greater, general good -- if they do any such work, it is solely from private businesses. It is the Republican tradition to look down their noswes at anyone who would "mix" with the "lesser" classes, which includes all who are not-quite-white in their view.

That disparagement of community organizers is going to come back to bite and haunt the Republican Party of haters, because it insutls the intelligence, integrity, and usually pay-free volunteer community work of many, many millions. To Republicans, those who don't limit their work to making and mnaximizing personal profits are invisible. In this instance, community organizers, the invisible constitutes many millions of people who do good works without expecting to be paid, or overpaid, for it, and in most instances don't do it for attention and credit.

It insults an enormous number of people who, with that one "clever" remark from an obvious elitist, changed their mind as to who they are going to vote for -- if they were for McSame in the first palce.

That one abusive comment is going to cost the Republican Party of elitist haters dearly in November. And it couldn't happen to a more deserving gang of

Just one more example of Republicans' genteel (or not so genteel racism).
And they wonder why there are only 36 African-American delegates?

The problem is everyone is upset or offended by some of the most harmless words. I'm white. I've been called uppity. Obama is black. Now he's called uppity. Either he wants to be treated the same or he wants to be treated special. As a child Sarah Palin was a cute girl. As a child Barack Obama was a cute boy. Oh my God! Did I say boy? He's very articulate. Wait. I can't call him that. I'm not sure why because he is articulate. Tough to keep all of this straight isn't it? Why do we say the n-word instead of actually saying the word? I'm guessing it's because it's a horrible and very offensive word. Yet, just walk the streets in NYC and a whole bunch of people are using it like they get paid each time they say it. What's it all mean anyway?

If I remember Grant took the traitor Rbt. E. Lee's sword at Appomattox. Westmoreland's side lost, and continues to lose the civil war.

Some props for General Lee.

Everyone on both sided knew he was the BEST military mind on the planet at that time. When he decided he couldn't win, the vast majority of the South assumed that it HAD to be over.

ANYONE ELSE offering the sword to Grant would have been second guessed by the majority of Confederate movers and shakers, and the "War of Northern Aggression" would have continued for many more months.

Yeah, well at least Obama didn't wear a $300,000 outfit to his convention. Guess the McBushes are just regular, down home (all 7 of them) people. At least, that's what the repugs would like you to think.

Wake up, the people of many parts of Georgia are just like this clown. I've had the unfortunate circumstance to see the blatant racism up close and personal of these same so-called white Christian folks. The central belief that they cling to, is God, guns and the Bible and it is what they continue to use to justify that they are O.K. to accept that they're better people because they possess white skin.

Until, some so-call white leaders begin to confront race in the way that Obama was forced by events to do, as a whole the pretending and posturing will continue as we all are thrust head-on into an American society filled with more black, brown, yellow and red faces; filled with generational contempt for a huge pocket of white folks still clinging to their misconceptions about their skin color and that of other's skin color.

As a U.S. congressman, Westmoreland cosponsored a bill to place the Ten Commandments in the House of Representatives and the Senate. Westmoreland also sponsored a bill that the Ten Commandments could be displayed in courthouses in a historical setting.

In May 2006, political humorist Stephen Colbert interviewed Westmoreland for The Colbert Report show segment Better Know a District. The congressman was only able to name three of the Ten Commandments he sought to legally put in public display.

He didn't realize that "uppity" is a word that should be the 11 commandment, as in thou shall not use the word uppity

He wanted to display the Ten Commandments outside of the House of Representative and the Senate, that's the problem with these people, they never bothered to read past the Old Testament.
