GOP Congressman Calls Obama "Uppity"

Georgia Republican Rep. Lynn Westmoreland used the racially-tinged term "uppity" to describe Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama Thursday.

Westmoreland was discussing vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin's speech with reporters outside the House chamber and was asked to compare her with Michelle Obama.

"Just from what little I've seen of her and Mr. Obama, Sen. Obama, they're a member of an elitist-class individual that thinks that they're uppity," Westmoreland said.

Asked to clarify that he used the word "uppity," Westmoreland said, "Uppity, yeah."

I've never heard a redneck use the word uppity without the ugly word behind it. I'm surprised this guy could hold is tongue at just one offensive statement.

When I was a young man growing up in the Deep South, many long years ago, shortly after Jesus walked on the water and Pat Robertson videotaped it, whenever the word "uppity" was used as an adverb in a conversation around my young impressionable self, it always had another word after it. In other words, it was used to moderate that other word. And that other word, it always started with an "N". Never heard it used back then to describe a white person. They called white people "snooty" instead.

And not a moment too soon either, eh? Let's get it out in the open. In Georgia, lot of Atlanta voters in Georgia--Morehouse University, Cynthia Tucker political columnist. Wouldn't want no uppity person giving those Georgian electoral votes to some uppity ... who had the uppityness to vote for President in a state where Bob Barr might right wing the Republican party out of its fair share now. Might have to become a breakaway state and hoist the old rebel flag one more time--keep those uppity out. As a U.S. congressman, Westmoreland cosponsored a bill to place the Ten Commandments in the House of Representatives and the Senate. Westmoreland also sponsored a bill that the Ten Commandments could be displayed in courthouses in a historical setting.

In May 2006, political humorist Stephen Colbert interviewed Westmoreland for The Colbert Report show segment Better Know a District. The congressman was only able to name three of the Ten Commandments he sought to legally put in public display.

He didn't realize that "uppity" is a word that should be the 11 commandment, as in thou shall not use the word uppity.

This guy is old and white and from Georgia, doesn't that automatically make a person more likely racist then not? Westmoreland, stop being a stereotype of southern whites. Hopefully the Obama movement can change some of these red states and give younger and more progressive whites an opportunity to re-write regional history. Til then cavemen like Westmoreland will be representing those southern states.
