I Like ItI Don’t Like It
John Mccain

Below is reaction to John McCain's Republican convention speech.

David Gergen thought the speech repeated the same old GOP ideas:

I did not think that the substantive part of the speech worked very well. It was mostly a rerun, retread of a lot of old Republican ideas that have brought us to where we are now. I think the country is looking for fresh answers. It's hard to separate yourself out from President Bush when you essentially have the same economic policies as President Bush. I thought that the policy presentation was a little thin."

Bush speechwriter Michael Gerson slammed McCain's speech on MSNBC

The policy in the speech was rather typical for a Republican. Pretty disappointing. It didn't do a lot of outreach to moderates and independents on issues that they care about. It talked, about issues like drilling and school choice which was really speaking to the converted. I think that was a missed opportunity. Many Americans needed to hear from this speech something they have never heard from Republicans before. And in reality, a lot of the policy they've heard from Republicans before.

The New Republic thought the speech was flat:

It's not over yet but this is a very underwhelming speech. Familiar points explained in pedestrian terms. No overarching themes--right now it's sounding like a State of the Union laundry list. Even the crowd in the hall isn't jazzed. This is the sort of reception Tom Ridge got.

MSNBC pointed out that the biggest applause of the night was for Sarah Palin. Watch clip:

Jeffrey Toobin told Wolf Blitzer on CNN that:

I thought it was the worst speech by a nominee that I've heard since Jimmy Carter in 1980.

I thought it was disorganized, themeless, I thought it was very, very boring until the end when he started talking about his personal story, which is, of course, remarkable and always important to hear. I personally cannot remember a single policy proposal that he made because they had nothing connecting them. I found it shockingly bad.

Story continues below

Watch clip:

The National Review also thought it fell flat:

Ehhhhh...maybe I'm missing some grand strategy or tactics, but I think it was a missed opportunity. Good that he did some policy. I liked that he championed free trade -- something he didn't have to do. I liked the fight, fight, fight stuff. Good that he was specific. I can come up with specific compliments about this or that. But it was flat, forced and basically a free pass for Obama.

The New York Times blog said people were falling asleep:

Sleepy? Our colleague Patrick Healy reports from the floor: There is a delegate in the Utah section and a delegate in Puerto Rico who are both drooping, eyes closed - look asleep - both are men.

ABC News asks whether McCain has a different take on community organizing:

ABC News' Deputy Political Director Karen Travers points out that despite all the "community organizer"-bashing at this convention, Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., seems to like the notion, at least based on this passage:

If you find faults with our country, make it a better one. If you're disappointed with the mistakes of government, join its ranks and work to correct them. Enlist in our Armed Forces. Become a teacher. Enter the ministry. Run for public office. Feed a hungry child. Teach an illiterate adult to read. Comfort the afflicted. Defend the rights of the oppressed. Our country will be the better, and you will be the happier. Because nothing brings greater happiness in life than to serve a cause greater than yourself.

If a community organizer isn't someone "defend(ing) the rights of the oppressed," or getting involved to correct the mistakes of government, what is it?

TPM asked if McCain's speech smothered Palin's sizzle?

Not a lot to say about McCain's speech but how on earth did they not avoid this:

Prediction: There will be little to no bounce out of tonight; indeed, McCain's speech will smother Palin's sizzle like a wet blanket.

Time gave it a mixed review:

A mixed performance. The ending worked, though in the hall I doubt anyone could hear him very well as he spoke through the crowd's applause. The final peroration -- "We're Americans. We don't hide from history. We make history" -- was strong stuff.

It also noted McCain's struggle with the Teleprompter.

He's struggling, as he sometimes does -- misplacing the emphasis on words, sounding at times like he's reading the speech for the first time, losing energy during the sections on issues he's never been particularly passionate about, buring applause lines in a string of sentences. It's as if he can't bring himself to pretend he's not reading a teleprompter -- that the charade distracts and frustrates him.

Has anyone else out there noticed Jeffrey Toobin of CNN has hit the nail on the head a number of times. I've noticed him in contradiction with some of the other long standing pundits - and - turn out to be on the mark. Also has a way of not mincing words. Isn't booming or caustic but right out there.

McCain's speech and mannerisms were wooden and flat (Al Gore x12). I couldn't understand why people were giving him a standing ovation every few sentences.........

Then I figured it out.

These were the same people who were rising and wildly applauding George Bush a few nights before.

It don't take much.

Well, it is preliminary. Let's wait and see the actual numbers. I will be shocked if it holds.

I am an O supporter and working very hard on his campaign! Our job as supporters were to watch the speech, so when we are approached by someone (with the lies and distortions), we would be able to have an intelligent conversation regarding the smears. I think a lot of people like myself were just curious in knowing that McCain's Camp would be pulling the same old mantra! And by the way, a lot of pundits have said JSM stole a lot of Obama's talking points. Now we ALL know! Nothing original in their platform.

Great, as an expert observer of both speeches, would you please help me with a few concerns about O's speech?

Do you honestly in your heart of hearts believe he can enact all the changes he laid out in his acceptance speech?

Making nuclear power safe...
Making coal environmentally friendly...
Creating the next generation of ultra fuel efficient vehicles and saving Detroit...
Returning fiscal discipline to Washington while cutting taxes for 95% of taxpayers in a time of war...
Closing every tax haven worldwide...
Closing every loophole in the tax code...
Eliminating all wasteful spending in the budget...
Making the country energy independent in 10 years without drilling...
Implementing universal health care...
Creating 5 million new jobs...
Making college affordable for every person... etc, etc, etc...

Frankly, it seems WILDLY optimistic, even irrationally naive, that he could accomplish ALL of those things, let alone a majority of them.

Before the McCain/Pain supporters start cheering too much about numbers, you should realize that Obama's speech was praised by all segments of the media. If more people did tune in to see John McCain, what they got for their trouble was a boring speech that did little but deflate the larger audience. Jeffrey Toobin on CNN last night called it "the worst speech by a nominee that I've heard since Jimmy Carter in 1980" - "disorganised, themeless ... [and] shockingly bad." In addition, in spite of all the hoopla, Obama is still ahead in the daily tracking polls - no "bounce" for McSnooze, I fear.
As per one article: "The real focus of media inquiry has been on more substantive issues: the bipartisan investigation into whether Pain abused her office by firing the public-safety commissioner for refusing to get rid of her ex-brother-in-law; her selective memory about the "bridge to nowhere"; her association with the Alaskan Independence party, whose founder proclaimed that he had "no use for America or her damned institutions"; and her anti-science positions on such matters as creationism and global warming.
Pain may have aroused the base, but she'll likely prove to be a drag on the ticket among the independents and conservative Democrats whom McCain needs to win."
Pain also took it upon herself to use the power of her line item veto in a budget to eliminate funding for a shelter for homeless unwed pregnant teenagers.....

For those of you who watched McSame on CSPAN last night, I thought the fact that there were actually protesters that snuck in and made their presence known was telling - I don't recall any in Denver during Obama's speech. That, and the fact that as soon as they were escorted out, the audience was peppered with brown shirt goon squads, standing here and there facing into the audience to prevent any others from disrupting the zombie's speech. It was also reavealing that everytime a protester did make their presence known, that the crowd started chanting "USA! USA!" over and over. Typical Koolaid drinkers. I personally like the young man with the banner exclaiming that McCain voted against veterans. Good one, considering his whole speech centered around the "I'm a POW" theme.

Without a doubt I honor McCain's military/POW record! Without a doubt we need a president with answers on how to get us out of the mess George W. Bush has us in now. Bush missed the ditch and has us in a canyon of trouble. McCain’s acceptance speech offered zero solutions. John is so blatantly out of touch with Middle America (those making less than 5 million). Without a doubt there isn't ANY logic that says to give McCain and the Republicans another chance to get it right in the White House. Remember the Republicans themselves say they have not only lost their way but their principles. Republicans need to come back into the political process when they have their party fixed. For 20 years they have been without answers because they have been so tied to Ronald Reagan's failed policies - the root of today’s problems.
If you like the mess we are in, John McCain is your man!
I can't imagine why Sarah Palin wants to be part of this mess and kill her political career so soon.
Vote wisely America!

Mike Long of the White House Writers group went on Canadian National News and said the speech was terrible....stumbling throughout it.......Canadian News said he used the word "fight" 43 times and lost count on the word "change". Of course his speech writers continue to "steal" phrases from other candidate's campaign. He should fire them all. But just like "Bushie" couldn't get rid of Rumsfeld, McCain can't get rid of his "Lobby". Shows very bad judgement on McCain's part. Really McCain is as bad as Bush when it comes to speechs.....both are a couple of "Stumblebums"

Well, string those to theme words together 43 times and what do you get??

Fight, Change; Fight, Change; Fight, Change; Fight, Change; Fight, Change; Fight, Change; Fight, Change; Fight, Change; Fight, Change; Fight, Change; Fight, Change; Fight, Change; Fight, Change; Fight, Change; Fight, Change; Fight, Change; Fight, Change; Fight, Change; Fight, Change; Fight, Change;....Got it??

The entire convention was about insulting, demeaning and distorting the other side. There were no solutions or policies presented to address the problems created in the last eight years. That's all they've got?

It's pretty sad, but the facade of that they are actually in tune with what's going on is only a facade, an image crafted to get votes. In reality, they have caused most of the problems for the past 8 years... why would they now even want to change anything? This is the US that they wanted, and at their convention, it's like they are only preaching to the choir.

They are eating their own spin, and regurgitating it over and over and over.

Wow. I could not believe how bad this speech was. No real policy discussion outside of the old Repub bromides that promise nothing but more of the same. And the biography, while compelling the first 5 or 6 times I heard it, is beginning to really sound lame. We all know that McCain was a POW and that he suffered as such, and we all salute him for his service, albiet in another illegal and immoral war. But listening to him is kind of like watching reruns of the old Lawrence Welk show, with all the elderly folks waltzing around to truly boring and insipid music. McCain is a mid-20th century man, and his "solutions" are a rehash of old ideas, most of which have been thoroughly discounted by almost 8 years of their implementation with disastrous results for our nation and the world. The world has changed, and is changing very rapidly as we speak. If we do not put people with new ideas and the vision to make them real in power, this nation is doomed to 3rd world status.

Bulletin: 605,000 JOBS LOST since January 2008! Jobs CREATED: 0 Guess McCain is REALLY out of touch. WHAT PARTY has BEEN IN CHARGE for the LAST 8 years? And thanks John--WE, THE PEOPLE WILL throw the bums out! Have fun reminiscing about 'THE GOOD OLD DAYS' while a DEMOCRATIC CONGRESS and PRESIDENT 'GET THINGS DONE'.

Thanks,ranger5 and jacqmac, terrific posts...wish I'd said that.I live in Old South and it's worrisome to me to see a lot of the people around me accept same-old-same-old in order to NOT have to convert their thinking...they've actually forgotten what a President and Vice-President are SUPPOSED to do!

But I think the news that Sarah Palin has worked with her hands and nose will bring public interest back to the campaign. People want to know how you do that. Well-played, Senator McCain. Well-played.

People, people...McPOW had his moment, it's over. Now back to Obama!!!

Someone asked what Obama was actually going to do for us if elected. Said he hadn't heard that yet.

My response was, "It's actually what he's not going to do which is more important to me." And I expanded...

**He's not going to continue the corruption of the Bush administration, which McPOW could not avoid considering he would owe them soooo many favors for his campaign.

**He's not going to illegally manipulate the Department of Justice. I think we all know what I'm talking about here...say no more.

**He's not going to have a theatre full of CORPORATE LOBBYISTS to return favors to for his campaign, because Obama doesn't have any. McAnkleGrabber will have sooo many he'll be serving them for his entire term.

**He's not going to LIE US INTO MORE WARS. McWarMonger may not even bother lieing about it this time. I don't think he's that creative...he just wants war.

**He's not going to deregulate everything and hope the corporatists will police themselves...or at least get good at covering it up.

**He's not going to thumb his nose at the rest of the world and act like America doesn't need them anyway. We do.

And there's more, but even if he DIDN'T do those things, and did nothing at all, he would be waaay ahead of McPOW!!!!!!!!!!!

Obama/Biden - Because we CAN'T CONTINUE THE BUSH YEARS!!!

Your typical Duh-Con response...he tried the "How do you know McCain would do any of that", so I started to break it down for him, and when he realized I was right, he started attacking Obama.

I think the Cons are really so stup1d they take it as a personal insult when you point out a flaw in "their team", or candidate as it were. They're not smart enough to say, "yeah, he's a dirt ball" based on their own values.

Or maybe he's "their dirtball"?!!

I tried to listen and watch, but fell asleep; and woke back up to hear the commentators.
The only thing that I heard while I was awake that I liked was McCain's admission that Republicans did not make change while they had the chance. Still, I am certainly not going to vote to give them a second chance.

I, as many Americans, have been trying to get a perspective on the 2008 Presidential campaign. It is emotionally packed, volitile and exhausting to say the least! So much is at stake for all of us. This may be the "point of no return" for the USA we have come to love and appreciate over many generations.

Yes, I will have to admit that I dozed on and off during the last night of the GOPconvention. However, the resounding theme seemed to be a rally for war, patriotism (and "static" drowning out a single protester in the arena).

"Country First" means more that just the singular concept of fighting against the "forces of evil" in the form of terrorists. It means taking care of our PEOPLE--young, old and in between. Our infrastructure is crumbling (bridges, roads, dams, etc.), our economy is dire, dire straits, governmental programs that are vital to the backbone of this great country--the USDA, the FDA, FEMA, etc. are lacking terribly to keep our food supply safe, our pharmaceuticals free from fear for ALL America, and give the people in the US security should any other natural disaster devastate a region of this country.

History has and will bear witness to the many governments/"civilizations" that have failed over the passage of time by spreading themselves too thin to support the pure concept of those governments at their conception.

Search your hearts, your souls and THINK about what is at stake.

Vote, America, VOTE!!
