I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Green

One of the more memorable moments of the general election was when, after Barack Obama secured the Democratic nomination, John McCain gave a competing speech against a lime green backdrop. That set looked like some something like pea green and was an exclamation point to one of the Senator's worst (and most ridiculed) speeches on the campaign trail.

Well, during his acceptance speech during tonight's convention, it's back. McCain is pictured once again speaking in front of a large lime-green backdrop. I'm told that the bigger image is supposed to be grass (I'm watching from the convention itself, and they place the press practically behind the stage). But the effect for viewers not in Minneapolis is the same.

From June:

UPDATE: It was, I've been told a picture of a lawn in front of a random house. The screen changed about ten minutes in to a sky-blue backdrop which may not be all that more effective.

LATE UPDATE: Reader LA identifies the mystery property.

"It's not a house.... it's a Middle School in North Hollywood, California. A little irony... it's Walter Reed Middle School. My son goes there.... in a decidedly Democratic neighborhood, I might add. McCain's campaign used the very same photo that appears on one of the school's websites... http://walterreed.tech.googlepages.com/home (The "Tech Academy" is one portion of Walter Reed. The photo is of the entire school.) I'm friends with the person in charge of that website... I've sent an email to ask if he knows who owns the photo.

MORNING UPDATE: The RNC team may have meant to put Walter Reed Army Medical Center behind the candidate, and accidentally used Walter Reed Middle School instead.

I guess it is a simple mistake if you look in goggle and get pictures of something called Walter Reed, and it happens to be the wrong one. The bigger question is if John McCain surrounds himself with people incapable of doing proper research and they fail to take care to ensure they are in fact using the correct information, what will he do as president? He has had many ooopsies since he started his campaign, and this is just adding to the list. As a single incident this is insignificant but as part of the whole it just adds to the incompetence factor. It also really calls into question more of his overall judgment, in that he seems to not be able to choose the proper qualified people for his staff.

Worse than that is the fact the McCain seems to be running on his military POW status instead of record. I find it amazing that he never caught the problem, that his staff didn't know what Walter Reed looked like, and again he has no clue what his staff is up to. It seems there may have been some other entity in charge when they tried to use the wounded as a backdrop. It also shows lack of judgement or they just aren't aware of what is going on with our wounded!!!

I'm sure there are some seniors out there that can handle the rigors of an extensive national campaign at 72 but John McCain isn't one of them. He lacks good judgment and critical thinking skills. I know he suffered as a POW and our nation will be forever grateful for his service and sacrifice to our great nation, but he is not president material--and Palin is DEFINITELY NOT VP material.

My father is 72 and I couldn't imagine him trying to do this--it would probably kill him and he hasn't had 4 bouts of cancer.

When someone from McCains camp called the school pic just "clip art" and meant nothing to them it was a stupid answer as the "picture" they were resenting when McCain accepted the nomination one would believe it to be significant to them otherwise a blank single color would have been ok. That is how it turned out to the tv viewers anyway when all you see is the nasty green color. The color of green they already should have known as being the worst for McCain but the whole picture was I guess supposed to be seen so the green would be the grass. The other piece which should also bother people is that it shows that the campaign and GOP thought the public would be thrilled to see any picture with the name Walter Reed on it. But I choose the low road her and believe someone in charge of the "clip art" found the name Walter Reed and selected it on the list never realizing there was also a school with the name on it and having no clue knowing what Walter Reed Hospital looked like believed they had scored the real thing instead of the "Hollywood version" of Walter Reed. Stupid is and stupid does clp art I think. I also believe out of all of those who saw the picture no one thought much of the background and what it was supposed to represent so they never changed it.... Kind of funny n a sad way.

It just shows you...you can take the "collective brains" in McCain's camp....roll them up into a tiny ball....shove the up an ants behind and it will still rattle like a bb in a boxcar!!!!!!!!!!

What a bunch of idiots. It goes to show just how out of touch the GOP/McCain are. I think there is a big difference between a hospital and a middle school. How can these morons support the troops if they don't know where they are at.

GEE! Don't you guys know ANYTHING?
McCain needs the green background so that later - when needed - he can be shown arriving in Bosnia (or Iraq, for that matter) under sniper fire. Its called green screening.

Not very good are they? These are the folks who think we should put them in charge of the country? Isn't 8 years of blundering through life enough?

I definitely think we should put these people in charge of the whole country.

Given that Walter Reed Army Medical Center is, first, Army and second the focal point of the veteran's medical scandal in the Bush administration, why would McCain even want it as a backdrop???

McCain stooped to using images of 9/11 yesterday - shamefully - as though he had any thing valuable to contribute in the management of that calamity. His symbolism (logo) for the candidates McCain*Palin, is lifted directly from the Army's logo. The intended image of Walter Reed Hospital was meant to endear him to veterans. I would have no objection to his using these images if there was a modicum of sincerity; there is not. He has repeatedly voted against funding for veterans healthcare.
