Green

One of the more memorable moments of the general election was when, after Barack Obama secured the Democratic nomination, John McCain gave a competing speech against a lime green backdrop. That set looked like some something like pea green and was an exclamation point to one of the Senator's worst (and most ridiculed) speeches on the campaign trail.

Well, during his acceptance speech during tonight's convention, it's back. McCain is pictured once again speaking in front of a large lime-green backdrop. I'm told that the bigger image is supposed to be grass (I'm watching from the convention itself, and they place the press practically behind the stage). But the effect for viewers not in Minneapolis is the same.

From June:

UPDATE: It was, I've been told a picture of a lawn in front of a random house. The screen changed about ten minutes in to a sky-blue backdrop which may not be all that more effective.

LATE UPDATE: Reader LA identifies the mystery property.

"It's not a house.... it's a Middle School in North Hollywood, California. A little irony... it's Walter Reed Middle School. My son goes there.... in a decidedly Democratic neighborhood, I might add. McCain's campaign used the very same photo that appears on one of the school's websites... http://walterreed.tech.googlepages.com/home (The "Tech Academy" is one portion of Walter Reed. The photo is of the entire school.) I'm friends with the person in charge of that website... I've sent an email to ask if he knows who owns the photo.

MORNING UPDATE: The RNC team may have meant to put Walter Reed Army Medical Center behind the candidate, and accidentally used Walter Reed Middle School instead.

I was talking to someone who I have known professionally for several years, when the subject of the war and the election came up.

My associate told me that her Dad had been a POW in Vietnam, although not for as long as McCain, and that her Dad was definitely not voting for McCain.

I know that there is no way for readers to independently verify this sort of thing on the internet, but I and my family and friends know that it is true. I would not want to release names without approval. Anyway, I know there are some servicemen who will vote for McCain, but there are also a whole lot of veterans who think that McCain is the wrong man to lead this country.

Better yet, even current military men and women are more fired up over Obama. I heard on a local radio station (decidedly not liberal) about a month ago that $10,000 had been donated to the McCain campaign by active military people, as opposed to $50,000 to Obama.

John McCain doesn't need a pea green background to make you sick to your stomach.

He's worked for the federal government his entire life. At least Sarah Palin worked on a fishing boat once. Yeah, they're in touch with reality.

You know people....

I am looking at all of this fiasco....

and the FACT the we have a VP candidate that is in the middle of an ethics investigation...

And pardon me for accusing guilty.. but from everything that I have read, she was definately using her political office to ruin the life of this man.... so what that he was in his FOURTH marriage, as it was emphasized.... but they LIED about things... and then three years later, they still can't let it go..

This shows me a person of vindictiveness... not a person of moral christian values.....

If this had been happening as little as 10 years ago, this Sara Palin would have been dropped hotter than a burning coal..... she would never have EVEN gotten past the vetting process......

What has America come to? We laugh at abuse now?

I know what you mean.. I just read an article in a Washington DC newspaper, and the article kept using the word mentally retarded and the word retarded by itself. I called the reporter's voice mail and lit into him..Have they no shame? I asked for a retraction....wonder if that will happen. This is the kind of stuff that end's up happening when the Federal Government is taken over by cronysim, and hiring by political party and religious affiliation. Lowest common denominators.

I sure hope we get to clean it up.

"Sarah Barracuda" did not start out to be a term of endearment as Repubs would now have us believe but rather a derogatory description.

This is hilarious! It seems like Comedy Central had staff on the convention team. The Walter Reed School and the green screen are going to be so funny to see on The Daily Show and The Colbert Report. I can't wait!

Now, you people, don't be mean to Angelina! Sometime last evening, during the McCain speech, before I fell asleep, I saw not one but TWO black faces, one male, one female, among all those old white guys and a few old ladies in silly hats. So the Republicans DO have diversity. Come to think of it, maybe Angelina was the black female at the convention. Come clean, Angelina, was that you?

The old New Yorker cartoon is so true: dog at the computer screen, caption says: On the internet no one knows you're a dog. I can say I am a black female supporting McCain or I can say I am a trans-gendered Republican toilet stall inspector supporting Obama. I can say anything and so can Angelina.

It maybe looked better because it was in such a small enclosed space, and that is all. They used those tacky plastic letters from the hardware store for the McCain/Palin's in white around the bleachers.

Compared to 84,000 people and fireworks, confetti that covered everyone in that huge space as well as balloons. There is no contest. Chris has turned into such a repube dork traitor. Cannot even bear to watch him at all anymore. Loud,Brash,Overbearing,Bloviator.

Too bad McCain's people didn't contact the 6th-8th grade Technology Academy students at Walter Reed Middle School in North Hollywood, Ca. They would have aced a Google Search for Walter Reed Army Hospital. Then again, I think a lot of the kids and families I know there would be saying "we're students at Walter Reed and we did not approve this message." Here's what I posted on the LA Times blog:

My son is a student at Reed, and while the novelty and humor of this doesn't escape me, and my husband is the one who identified the school to the Huffington Post, I hate to hear that the school is being deluged with media requests.

The Technology Academy has woefully outdated computers and software, the school is actually still overcrowded - whereas last year we had 1900 students on a 3 track system, meaning 1200 students at a given time - we now have a (not) "reduced" population of 1600 students....

If someone wants to send a news crew to Reed to see how a diverse, overcrowded, aging Middle School in a suburban area with a population of kids from wildly disparate economic circumstances functions, and talk about what could be done to help our schools in a concrete, let's-dump-No Child-Left-Behind way, I'm all for it. Otherwise the second year Principal with a revolving door of counselors and staff needs to get back to work.
