Michelle Obama Poses For Cover Of More — On Her Own Terms

Few women are as in demand for women's and fashion magazines as Michelle Obama -- though if Sarah Palin lasts, she may give Obama a run for her money. Lucky for More, then, that it started negotiating a women's magazine cover exclusive for the wife of the Democratic nominee posing alone (rather than in the ubiquitous family portraits) before Barack Obama had even clinched the nomination. ...

Another stipulation was that Obama wear her own clothes for the shoot with Matthew Rolston (evening gowns were out, because they could look presumptuously inaugural) so she is pictured wearing (who else?) Maria Pinto. Being fond of ornamentation, Obama insisted on the black bow.

This campaign has degenerated into TV's worst reality show, complete with manufactured story lines: "Michelle's Photo Shoot!" "Levi's New Tattoo!" "Sarah Disagrees with Cindy!" And every time we allow ourselves to be distracted by this cynically contrived bullshit, it puts us another step away from having the serious national discussion we never got around to having, the one about how the United States, unprovoked, marched into a sovereign nation, slaughtered countless thousands of people, overthrew the government and installed our own puppets, with the long-range goal of pillaging that country's natural resources, and then lied repeatedly about our motives.

Let's grow up and get serious, and let's demand the same from our candidates. The entire world is depending on the American people to approach this election with a seriousness of purpose we haven't exhibited in years. This is no time to be treating politics as entertainment.

By contrast, I'm looking at Cindy McCain right now give her speech. Her exploitation of her adopted daughter is just shameful and distastefull. That poor girl being used as a poster child to advertise her mother's greatness. Just tacky.
