"Milk" Trailer: Sean Penn Plays Gay Official In '70s San Francisco (VIDEO)

Here is the first video look at Gus Van Sant's "Milk." The film tells the story of California's first openly gay elected official, Harvey Milk (played by Sean Penn), a San Francisco supervisor who was assassinated. Out this November, it costars James Franco, Josh Brolin, Emile Hirsh and Diego Luna.

looks great, though i must say it was refreshing and surprising to see the writer's name displayed so dominantly at the end of a trailer. well done. in an industry where the writer is relegated to often-thankless status, this was pretty cool.

As a relative of Harvey Milk, I'm excited to see this finally happen. Forget about Penn's politics, he can act. I'm too young to have known Harvey, but from what relatives tell me, he's spot on.

This looks good. Van Sant is a strange director... He's worked in very different styles over the years. This looks similar in style to "To Die For", and not like his steadicam movies (Gerry, Elephant, Last Days), or his feel good movies (Finding Forrester, Good Will Hunting), which is great cause "To Die For" is excellent!

One problem: when "Brokeback Mountain" was nominated there was an informal poll given to the Academy members by several people in the press. The question was, would they vote for a film with a homosexual theme. The rather shocking majority said no. I know everyone thinks Hollywood is liberal and open but it has a pretty strong legacy of homophobia and oppressing gay members in the film community.

If you don't like the portrayal don't just blame Penn, the Director has a lot to do with the tone and performances. It's a collaborative process.

And I nearly cried over the trailer. I can't imagine how this is going to feel in a theatre. I can't wait either. At last, something that will finally show young members of the LGBT what came before them. I think some have ignored that.
