Obama Swing Voters

Barack Obama responded personally to Sarah Palin's harsh speech at the Republican National Convention in York, Pennsylvania. "You're hearing an awful lot about me, most of which is not true," he said. "What you're not hearing is a lot about you." His full remarks:

"You wouldn't know that this is such a critical election by watching the convention last night. I know we had our week and so, you know, the Republicans deserve theirs. But it's been amazing to me to watch. Over the last two nights, if you sit there and you watch it, you're hearing a lot about John McCain -- and he's got a compelling biography as a POW. You're hearing an awful lot about me, most of which is not true. What you're not hearing is a lot about you."

"I mean, you haven't heard one word about how they're going to make the health care system work so that if a union's negotiating with a company, it's not all just a discussion about higher premiums, and you can actually start talking about higher wages and benefits. You haven't heard one word about how we're going to create more apprenticeship programs like the ones that we have here or give other people a chance to train in new trades. You haven't heard a word about getting serious about green and alternative energy, the kind of work that is resulting in all the expansion and additional hiring here. You haven't heard a word about how we're going to strengthen unions so that working people get a decent stake. You haven't heard a word about how we're going to improve math and science education so that we can hire more engineers to create more products in green technology. You haven't heard a word about how we're going to deal with any aspect of the economy that is affecting you and your pocketbook day-to-day. Haven't heard a word about it. I'm not exaggerating. Literally, two nights, they have not said a word about it. They've had a lot to say about me, but they haven't had anything to say about you. And the thing that I'm insisting on in this election is that we can't keep playing the same political games we always play."

Watch:

Asked about attacks on him Wednesday night by Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin, Obama declined to strike back. "I'll let Gov. Palin talk about her experience. I'll talk about mine," Obama said

But earlier in the day Obama's top strategist, David Alexrod, dismissed the Alaska governor's convention speech as dishonest about Obama's record.

Axelrod told reporters aboard Obama's campaign plane that the Republican National Convention speakers had distorted the Democratic candidate's record and ignored his resume. He also suggested that John McCain's running mate was only parroting what she'd been told.

"There wasn't one thing that she said about Obama or what he's proposing that is true," Axelrod said. "She tried to attack Sen. Obama by saying he had no significant legislative achievements. Maybe that's what she was told."

On Wednesday, Republicans sought to define Obama as untested and inexperienced, making light of his past work as a community organizer in Chicago.

"For everyday people, ... that seems like real work," said Axelrod.

Ultimately, Axelrod said, the Republicans squandered an opportunity to promote their candidate. He also questioned the emphasis on McCain's years as a prisoner of war, saying the Arizona senator's history already was well known.

"They're shedding an awfully lot of heat but no light," he said. "It almost defies the laws of physics."

As for Palin's claim to be a political outsider, Axelrod said that given her pointed criticism of Obama, "for someone who makes the point that she's not from Washington, she looked very much like she would fit in very well there."

I heard three word about Unions last night, from Guiliani I think. They came when he was listing the "freedoms" that the republican party claims to be championing.

The three words were "Right to Work"

Maybe someone better versed in labor/management relations can post here to explain how the Republican support for "Right to Work" benefits the working man and woman.

The reps are all about choice. So long as it's THEIR choice. If Rudy chooses to dress up and have odd sexual relations, well, I guess that's his choice. I don't know if it's really his choice if he uses NYC police or Ny state troopers to help him out.

Republican Party - the party of family values.

Much of the press is hailing Palin's speech. Her victory of small expectation. The Great White Snark. Jaws with teeth that can't chew. Can we NEVER be done with these people?

I couldn't watch Mrs. Palin last night she scares the daylights out of me. I have seen excerpts and am shocked at how little she knows how the real woeld works outside Alaska. She talks about Obama the eliteist, but isn't it the elite who don't know what a community organizer does? Kind of reminds me of "let them eat cake".

More snob than elite. America loves it's military 'elite' forces (who often turn out to be dangerous snobs. Apparently so in Pakistan - in case no one realizes that we've invaded another country.) The so-called social/political elites can be defined by any metric anyone withes to impose. McCain is a horrible snob to anyone without a bunch of houses or five million a year. He may pretend to make nice with his town hall 'captives' but most of them have already submitted. I wouldn't trust McCain to walk my dog if I had one.

"withes"? I've developed a keyboard lisp. Sorry. Of course, it could be an anagram for 'whites'.

I think you're wrong about McCain being a snob. If he was snobby, he would never pick a redneck moose hunter to be his running mate.

Not only was Palin's speech devoid of substance, it belittled Barack Obama’s service to his nation and those he's worked so hard for through community service and the passing of important legislation.

Palin’s speech was divisive and is creating a new war within our own country. When the government’s role should be to bring our country together the Republican message is “you are either with us or you are against us”. Don’t we have enough battles to fight elsewhere?

When our country needs to make thoughtful, careful decisions so our military men and women can come home, the Republicans spend their time shocking us with an unknown, poorly vetted candidate, smearing the work of Democrats and sending a hateful message. This is no way to support the people of our land or those fighting for it.

But Palin's, Rudy's, Thompsons, and others were a whole lot pure snark with little substance. I'll grant you any honest arguments but they were rare. But that is the nature of (especially 3rd night) of dem/reb conventions. This seems not entirely different than the rep convention of '64. (Outside of the the Goldwater/Reagan attempt to destroy and remake the rep. party in their own image.) This is hopefully a last gasp of Gingrich, Armey, Lott, various insane right wing "pastors", Bush and Cheney loyalists, Gonzalez, Gen. Franks and so many more. All the neocons. Rummy, Condi, How ever do we rid ourselves of these people? We vote for Obama and take our chances from there. I don't know if Obama has the cajones. I do know that no one else will be elected who might change the modern nonsense. I'm willing to give Obama a chance/ He'll have plenty of people around him. Maybe they help. Maybe they hinder. Imagining the people who will be aroung McCain/Palin? Can I get in on that. I could use the dough.

jrterrier, Obama criticized McCain's ideas and policies without belittling his experience, lying about his record, or making personal attacks.

It was the exact opposite of what Palin did to Obama last night.

Truly pathetic.

That Palin thinks community organizers have no "actual responsibilities" is just one more indication of her shallowness. Can there be any more important responsibility in our society than helping the downtrodden regain a sense of dignity, empowerment and hope?

Jesus was a community organizer.

Moses was a community organizer.

Dr. King was a community organizer.

Sorry, Governor, you flunk.

The only thing more amazing than the lack of policy specifics at the GOP convention is the absence of W and D i c k.
