UPDATE: Barack Obama's campaign met its expected $10 million dollar mark:

Barack Obama's presidential campaign said it raised $10 million Thursday following the Republican National Convention speech by rival John McCain's running mate, Sarah Palin.

Obama spokesman Bill Burton said Palin's address, heavily laced with digs at Obama, prompted an outpouring of donations from more than 130,000 donors.

The political impact of Sarah Palin continues to be hazy -- she's clearly revved up the Republican base, and helped McCain's campaign bring in more than $8 million since she was announced as his running mate.

But the Palin pick seems to be having a virtually identical effect on the Democratic base. Activists have frenetically picked apart Palin's record over the last week, and an Obama aide told the Huffington Post that the campaign has raised $8 million since her speech last night "from over 130,000 donors - on pace to hit $10 million by the time John McCain hits the stage tonight."

"Sarah Palin's attacks have rallied our supporters in ways we never expected," the aide said. "And we fully expect John McCain's attacks tonight to help us make our grassroots organization even stronger."

UPDATE: The Republican National Committee says it has raised $1 million since Palin's speech.

my wife and I organized about a dozen dems in our precinct last night, then we watched and hooted at McVain's speech. it only took six volunteers during the primary to win the precinct for obama. we now have folks committed to door-knocking, calling, registering voters, and doing other stuff.

so yeah, our community is organized, thank you very much

Are you one of those "community organizers" -- exactly what do you do?
You should spend your time on important things like service, volunteering and helping people close you. Just like McCain says. :)

I live in a fairly conservative, mostly white community where people have done well. I wouldn't describe these people as democrats.

You should see all of the Obama signs on our street...lol

Kind of blows the theory that Republicans are rich and Democrats are poor out of the water.

So, for those of you living in the bottom 25 states that are historically voting Republican each year.

“Are you better off after years under Republican control compared to other Americans in states under Democratic control?”

Ah, that is so great to heart, thank you for that.... That made my day. I am tired of them saying well Obama can't get the white vote and when he does they say well (Iowa) what about middle class working people, but then Kerry didn't get them. They just make me sick. I don't care what race a person is as long as they can help me, that's just someone really ignorant who does that and that's sad. We have come too far to go back...

Awesome comment. Repugs will have you thinking some crazy mess, but the truth is, anyone who is intelligent, can hope, and truly looks around race as the only thing that matters will see that it's Obama all the way. Not to mention Obama is actually a white man. . . he just happens to have a black father. . .!

McCain = lies, fear, hate
Obama = truth, love, understanding

It's a wash. Money is not an issue for the last 60 days. For either campaign.

that's your "evidence" an editorial by Maureen Dowd. If it could be backed up by fact it would be an article not an editorial.

After reading all about Palin, yesterday I came home to tell my wife we were going to donate to the Obama campaign. Well, my wife beat me to it and she actually donated more than what I had in mind. We are actually in a very tight budget (we have four kids) so money is always an issue but we both feel that this is way too important. If I get any kind of bonus at work I will donate some of it to Obama. Oh, and for those right wing fundamentalist who come here: I'm a Christian, I go to church every Sunday, my wife is a Sunday school teacher, I'm a member of our town's soccer league, and we donate to the poor and go on runs to the city to distribute food to the homeless. We also believe in separation of church and state.

Thank you nelgom, for giving back to your community. Many Christians should've been offended by Sarah Palin's "community organizing" remark. There are millions of Christians throughout this country who give back not only to their church but especially to their community. That's what makes this country great. She obviously doesn't understand how the rest of us Americans chip in to help others.
Maybe she needs to visit the rest of the United States "to see" what good work Americans do throughout their communities. She might be doing great work up in Alaska, but she certainly is out of touch from the rest of the United States! This makes me very nervous.

Thank you, neglom!!!

I have deep respect for those who choose not to push their beliefs into others lives. Separation of church and state is one of the most important aspects of our political foundation. Many on the right believe in manifest-destiny and that they are sent directly from god to conquer the world, so it's truly nice to see someone of faith, such as yourself, maintain focus on the true issues at hand.

Great! I am also a Christian who really does believe in giving to the poor, unlike some of the people at my church who think poor people are disgusting and shouldn't be given handouts. I always want to ask them, What the hell kind of Christian are you, seriously? Let us not forget that when Jesus came, he said "You will know it is me because I will be eating with the lepers, hanging with the prostitutes, and preaching the word to the poor. And when the rich and fake pious come to me in heaven, I will say 'I do not know you.'"

If you care so much about Hillary you should not vote Republican. The women worked so hard and it's not to see her voters put a Republican in the White House.
But you guys don't 'get it'.

Hillary: 'Most of all, I ran to stand up for all those who have been invisible to their government for eight long years.

Those are the reasons I ran for President. Those are the reasons I support Barack Obama. And those are the reasons you should too.

I want you to ask yourselves: Were you in this campaign just for me? Or were you in it for that young Marine and others like him? Were you in it for that mom struggling with cancer while raising her kids? Were you in it for that boy and his mom surviving on the minimum wage? Were you in it for all the people in this country who feel invisible?'

You are so right. Let me tell you how right you are. 2008 McCain wins, 2012 McCain wins a 2nd term. (its hard to unseat an incumbent President). 2016 Sarah Palin wins. (Palin is 44 and Hillary is 62).

In other words TamilSelvi, Hillary will be 70 in 8 years and Sarah Palin will be 52. Do you see the difference. But you go ahead and hold out hopes for Hillary or just join the Republican Party.

Good luck!!!

I wonder how much more he raked in during McCain's speech. I know that my husband gave $25 and I gave $25 during the McCain's speech. My husband is active duty military and I am a 12 year veteran so maybe that gets included in the "bean counting" of who is donating.

I watched Palin's and McCains speech....just donated again......how dare he take on the moniker of "change?" The Senator from South Carolina made me ill to watch twisting the truth. The Senator Lieberman should change his party affiliation TODAY and not tomorrow. As a female who is in an administrative position with a family, I had to make difficult choices and the choice was family first!!! I needed to raise my daughter and be there for her and if she became pregnant, I would be there for her not in job that required her father or a grandmother to fill my shoes. I just don't understand Ms. Palin's choices. She should have said thanks but no thanks. She put her own aspirations ahead of her daughter. Furthermore, she has never traveled outside of the country. To be a heartbeat away from the President lets me know that the Repubs are going to have a cabinet that will fulfill weaknesses that se obviously possess and she will only be a figure head. This lets me believe that she was chosen to appeal to the "Hillary" voters and believe me she is no Hillary Clinton. Senators Obama and Biden will appoint Senator Clinton to the cabinet and then the country will show up and show out!!!

Pain and McSame are dangerous to my wallet! No sooner than her screed ended Wed night was I seated at my computer donating $50 on top of the $100 that I had given after O's speech last week.

I'm going to be broke before November...

The stakes are very high, my dear friend and I can assure you that if we get our way on Nov. 4, you will root the benefits of your investment for many years to come and help your country become the great country it used to be. Keep donating as if your life depended on it, and quite frankly it actually does.
