UPDATE: Barack Obama's campaign met its expected $10 million dollar mark:

Barack Obama's presidential campaign said it raised $10 million Thursday following the Republican National Convention speech by rival John McCain's running mate, Sarah Palin.

Obama spokesman Bill Burton said Palin's address, heavily laced with digs at Obama, prompted an outpouring of donations from more than 130,000 donors.

The political impact of Sarah Palin continues to be hazy -- she's clearly revved up the Republican base, and helped McCain's campaign bring in more than $8 million since she was announced as his running mate.

But the Palin pick seems to be having a virtually identical effect on the Democratic base. Activists have frenetically picked apart Palin's record over the last week, and an Obama aide told the Huffington Post that the campaign has raised $8 million since her speech last night "from over 130,000 donors - on pace to hit $10 million by the time John McCain hits the stage tonight."

"Sarah Palin's attacks have rallied our supporters in ways we never expected," the aide said. "And we fully expect John McCain's attacks tonight to help us make our grassroots organization even stronger."

UPDATE: The Republican National Committee says it has raised $1 million since Palin's speech.

The country is not an extremist, Mc chose this woman like if he was running a primary. He rallied the extreme right, but he lost the rest of the country.

Last time I checked, you can't buy votes. Obama Democrats are clearly in a state of panic with what's going on with the Republicans. At some point, the Obama Democrats will need to get out and earn votes the hard way - working for them. Good policy helps. The ability to unite a party helps. Money doesn't hurt, but it can only take you so far. http://mespace.wordpress.com

Listen, triangulation. Obama has good policy - and everyone knows it. That woman PISSED US OFF. Because she thinks her 6 year bachelors degree in journalism from the U. of Idaho is in the same league as a magna cum laude Harvard law degree. She belittled community organizing, which i do myself - as if it were a joke. She says she's pro-life but really all she is is anti-abortion. she couldn't care less about the living; which is obvious by her cutting funding for a home for teenage pregnant girls. I guess it's alright to get pregnant as a teen as long as you have a mom that will let you live off of her. Oh and btw - THE PARTY IS UNIFIED BEHIND OBAMA. You need to do your homework and stop believing the hype. Obama has 79% of the Dem base - which is 2-5% more than Al Gore or John Kerry.

Just added mine because:
@ Had Michelle and Barak Obama walked onstage with a 17 year old pregnant unmarried daughter, holding hands with her boyfriend, the entire America would make sure that they bow their heads in shame.
@ I want a President who values Education and Ambition, not "redneck philosophy" passed off as core American "values".
@ Hokey "outdoorsiness" and attendant stories will NOT meet the challenges of an emerging Chinaand India and a bellicose Russia.
@ The Press, faults and all, is one of the most sacred elements of this democracy and if the 47 year old untested candidate for the second in command will not answer questions, then the nation is in peril.
@My son and daughter need a figure to look up to.

yeah i have spoken to women either who are of the same opinion as I am..but living in a big city I think most women might tend to agree with me. However, I have no idea how women in OH, PA, KS, etc think. So if there is anyone on this blog from there...give us a shout. Then I remind myslef this is a left leaning blog, so we probably wouldnt see much of them here.

I'm in New Mexico and she's galvanized me to fight back. She reminds me of Internet trolls who come on forums where you're supposed to be knowledgeable about a subject, and they know nothing and proceed to insult the people who've worked hard to get where they are. She's just a lightweight rabble rouser who enjoys sticking her thumb in your eye. She's the hired help, like a scab, or union buster. Or one step up from a hired heckler. That's all she is.

My dad has to force my mother to watch politics. She's just not that into it. So she caught wind of Palin's speech. She was completely turned off by Palin all together. My mother, who is a southern baby boomer, just thought that she sounded very rude and mean-spirited. The jokes weren't funny to her or her friends.

Well my mother lives in PA (western conservative side) and she was turned off by Palin's speech. She didn't like her condescending tone and sarcasm. She said that Palin gave a good speech but there were no details about what she believes and stands for and there was nothing about policy and with her being 1 heartbeat away from the presidency, she thinks McCain made a huge mistake in picking her. She still isn't sold on Obama either but she LOVES Biden. She also said that she has talked to many people in her area and the view is pretty much the same. Nobody is sold on Palin.

Media says McCain DIVORCED HIMSELF from the Bush administration. NEVER FORGET he voted WITH Bush MOST of the time. It's like when you're married. If you have kids you will always be related. He is a part of the effects of the votes he made --those are the babies. He CANNOT divorce himself from GWB. Snuggled right up in his arms..we've seen the pictures. REMEMBER THE EMBRACE. John McCain...whatever it takes to get a vote. NO WAY, NO HOW, NO MCCAIN/PALIN.

This will sound really corny...but I LOVE YOU OBAMA PEOPLE!
After watching the Repubs tonight and these past few days I felt I was in a time warp.
I started losing touch with reality and felt like hunting Moose, causing unnecessary wars, giving all my money to the top 1%, and yes I actually went out in my back yard and started drilling!
Finally, I heard this voice...come to the light...and BACK TO REALITY!
And I just donated my last ten bucks (until payday which is luckily tomorrow to the OBAMA campaign!
YES WE CAN!

Among the many lowlights of that speech was talk about choice and healthcare...and not having government have a say in your health....yet they would want to be able to take away your choice - hmm, it's okay to disagree but not when i'm right and you're wrong so let's get that unborn fetus to term (!), all the while telling you who you can sleep with and what passes for education in an already declining smartness of our kids. And 'no government bureaucrats to stand in your way between you and your doctor' - ouch, one of the 'european' ideas that mitt and rudy love to put down so much. i'd actually prefer that if there was a middleman, it'd be someone that i was taxed for and was technically accountable, and that i know i'd at the end of the day, be covered.... vs. a middleman who would deny me coverage right off the bat and/or tell me to take a hike, count the $, and that the knife in my back was a pre-existing condition. yeah, john mcwayne, change i can trust. please, go home. this is something barack touched on and i hope they hammer them on - we're not going back, we're moving forward...it's not that john mccain doesn't care, he just doesn't get it.

Excellent observation, MarcosEsquandolas. Kudos!

Don't forget that the McPains are both against a woman's right to choose - even in the event of rape and incest. NO EXCEPTIONS.

In this case, the McPains are FOR a rapist's right to choose who carries his baby - even if she's only 11 or 12. Also, the McPains are effectively for an incest rapist's right to plant their daughter, sister, niece, granddaughter with their babies and she has no choice but to carry it to full term.

We must not forget that this is the result of being against Roe v Wade and a woman's right to make important decisions about her own body.

I honestly want your opinion on this: Do you think women will rally behind palin because of gender (I am a female, and this past 1 week makes me realize that we should send her back to Alaska ASAP). But I have some nagging concerns because of her gender. And I also get the impression that some democrats are as well...although they will never voice it loud.

I almost cried when I saw her speech - I know people will call me a loser and say I'm pathetic but it just felt really good to see a woman up there and especially a woman who has a career and a family and isn't from a wealthy family and isn't ashamed of her disabled child. I read an interview with a woman married to a prominent politician in England who didn't have any photos of her disabled child as if she was ashamed of him.

And I was never a HC supporter but I'm still very angry about the horrible insults towards her during the primaries.

well, to each her own, but that woman is not anyone to look up to...

I know plenty of HARD working women, who have careers and children... if that qualifies you to be VP, then I am pissed that I wasn't vetted!!!

GET REAL.... so she has a vagina like me and you.... SO WHAT!!! She is sooo far to right that its terrifying.... if you want to see her win just bc of her sexual parts and not on the issues (she either has no clue or is fringe right)... then you really shouldn't be voting!!!!

Only those who are easily led will rally. Those who were saying women should be home to raise their kids are now saying it's okay - You can raise your kids and run the nation. She falls into the same bucket as Ferraro (although Ferraro had more qualifications) because she's being trotted around like a well behaved family pet. Women didn't fall for it in the Mondale campaign, and they won't in this one... no matter how many ways O'Reily spins it.

I am not defending Bush in anything, except protecting this country from highly potential radical islam attacks. Would you be able to express your opinion under sharia law? Roosevelts isolationist politics in the thirties led to complete destruction of the Pacific fleet, he sent boats with fleeing jews, asking for refuge, back to death camps, the great JFK had no balls to support Bay of Pigs and allowed Soviets to have a base just 92 miles south of US border and to compensate for that, started war in Vietnam, which was already lost by France.
US economy started its demise long time ago, before Bush, and I blame him for not changing that path. Job offshoring to Taiwan, Philipines, Singapore, Malaysia and eventually China started in seventies and peaked with NAFTA (signed by Billy) The prosperity was achieved by leveraging the preexisting strenght of dollar into more and more printed money sent in exchange of cheep goods from Asian markets. The strenght of dollar is gone, and prosperity is going away. There will be no 70-100k jobs for uneducated workers (like sentiment about closed steel mill in my town). But these people think they are too good to take 10-15$/h job at wahl or wal-mart DC (including benefits).
Obama will not return prosperity, he will create equal poverty, that's waht you want to achieve, do you?
