POKANE, Wash. - Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin attended five colleges in six years before graduating from the University of Idaho in 1987.

Federal privacy laws prohibit the schools from disclosing her grades, and none of the schools contacted by The Associated Press could say why she transferred. There was no indication any of them were contacted as part of the background investigation of Palin by presidential candidate John McCain's campaign.

"Our office was not contacted by anyone," said Tania Thompson, spokeswoman for the University of Idaho in Moscow.

Palin, the governor of Alaska, was born in Idaho. Her family moved when she was only a few months old to Alaska, where she was raised.

She began college at Hawaii Pacific University, a private, nonsectarian school in Honolulu. She attended only as a freshman during the fall of 1982, school spokeswoman Crystale Lopez said.

Then known as Sarah Louise Heath, she was in the business administration program as a full-time student, Lopez said.

"We're trying to track down someone who knew her," Lopez added.

From Hawaii Pacific, Palin transferred to North Idaho College, a two-year school in Coeur d'Alene, about 30 miles east of Spokane. She attended the college as a general studies major for two semesters, in spring 1983 and fall 1983, spokeswoman Stacy Hudson said.

"We were not able to track down club affiliations or anything," Hudson said.

The school identified one of her professors but he did not remember her, Hudson said.

Prior to her selection by McCain, the North Idaho College Alumni Association notified Palin in June she would be the recipient of its 2008-2009 Distinguished Alumni of the Year Award.

From North Idaho College, Palin transferred 70 miles south to the University of Idaho, the state's flagship institution. She majored in journalism with an emphasis in broadcast news. She attended Idaho, whose mascot is the Vandals, from fall 1984 to spring 1985.

She then returned to Alaska to attend Matanuska-Susitna College in Palmer in fall 1985.

Then she returned to Idaho, for spring 1986, fall 1986 and spring 1987, when she graduated. Despite her journalism degree, she does not appear to have worked for the college newspaper or campus television station, school officials said. She worked briefly as a sportscaster for KTUU in Anchorage after she graduated college.

The McCain campaign did not have an immediate comment on Palin's higher education record.

In a recent interview with the school's alumni magazine, before her selection to run on the GOP ticket, she explained that her curiosity and love of writing made journalism a natural choice.

"I was always asking everyone the questions, and I still am today," Palin told the magazine.

The University of Idaho is taking advantage of Palin's nomination. A prominent photograph of her is featured on the school's Web site.

Did she really graduate?

Also, do her kids even go to school?

Five, six undergrad colleges? Sounds like a "Just say 'MAYBE' tour". Worked as a sportscster?
I guess she wanted to lipstick/liplock Joe Namath. "Mr. Putin, melt down that iceberg!!!!"

Has anyone actually seen her diploma from the Univ of Idaho? or seen the alumni list?

Or what her GPA was. Or a transcript of her classes/grades. Or why she jumped around to so many colleges.

Just curious. What's the 5th college? You only list 4 colleges. And all of you that posted comments without catching the mistake and criticized Gov Palin, well you have zero credibility. You probably think there are 57 states also.

Technically you're right:

Hawaii Pacific University - 1982
North Idaho College - 1983
University of Idaho - 1984, 1985
Matanuska-Susitna College - 1985
University of Idaho - 1986, 1987

Four "different" colleges in six years (She went to the U of Idaho twice)

Oops I was wrong, it's five different colleges in six years...

University of Hawaii at Hilo - 1982
Hawaii Pacific University - 1982
North Idaho College - 1983
University of Idaho - 1984, 1985
Matanuska-Susitna College - 1985
University of Idaho - 1986, 1987

Six total colleges, but five different.

There are 50 states in the United States of America.

what a freakn' joke.... She is a disgrace to politics, just the sort of base-pumping distraction we have come to expect from the Republicans.

Looks like Sarah is used to getting the job without having any experience. How many people can walk directly into a sportscasting job without even haveing any college level journalism experience (on any of her college campuses). Looks like someone's been getting by on her "BRAINS", rather than her intellegence.

This is highly suggestive of emotional lability and raises the question as to whether she has ever been treated for a psychological or psychiatric condition.

You are kidding, right.

All this talk about experience, regarding McCain and Obama, what about Education. On any job application I can recall education and experience have been equally weighted. One has to have either years in experience or related education in order to qualify. In my view education should be a primary qualifier for president of the US. Specifically when we rank like number 14 in academia internationally. Especially when we have such high drop out rates and low test scores. Lets vote the top of the class as leaders of our great nation.

I think POTUS should have a degree with any combo of the following majors: Political Science, Economics, Sociology, History, International Studies. As well as a Law Degree or PhD in the above majors. Obama is more than qualified as a first rate thinker, top of the class Yale and Harvard. Lets include president of the Law review as relevant executive experience. Biden certainly qualifies for Vice with Political Science Undergrad and Syracuse Law degree. However, No way, no how, no bottom of the Naval academy class McCain. No way. no how, 6 college transfers Palin with a degree in Journalism(no wonder Alaskans have such high illiteracy rates and she advocates burning books)!! We want the best to lead our nation. Not best personalities but best minds. Now is the time for the Age on Intellectualism. Dummies need not apply, Americans will not be duped again. read 1984!!!

Who Cares. She graduated. What is important is she is anti-environment, pro-big oil, anti-choice, anti-alternate energy, apparently a creationist, etc... So she has kids with problems, so do I. So she went to five colleges in six years, she graduated. Get over it, focus on what is important. John McCain represents four more years of the SOS. He is a hawk, he has a temper, he takes care of the rich, he is pro big oil. It is time for a change, not time to air someones dirty laundry. This Sarah Palin stuff is for the birds focus on what counts!!

Man, my job interview seemed to last forever. I had to produce my diploma and even pee in a cup before getting hired as an engineer! You would think that a V.P. would have something a bit more grueling or thorough!
01:16 PM on 09/08/2008
Must I say it? If she were a minority or a man she would be the laughing stock of politics. Say what you want republicans, but 5 colleges in 6 years to get a communications degree- and without a legitimate excuse= a big dummy. Come on, we all know folks like this.
01:47 PM on 09/08/2008
hey, youdidn't notice:

she may have gone to five schools but the fact that two of them were not columbia and harvard is going to help her with most americans.

as for this:
"Must I say it? If she were a minority or a man she would be the laughing stock of politics"

here's my response: if barack obama was NOT a minority, if he a white freshman senator from illinois with his record of, em, uh, "legislative accomplishments," his candidacy would be a joke.
02:01 PM on 09/08/2008
Barack is a scholar and has 12 years as a legislator. Kinda tough to laugh, don't ya think? To place Palin on par with the other candidates, both past and present, is a reach at best. Deal with reality-- a better woman he could have found. Ever heard of Condi?

Famous highschool dropouts: Henry Ford, Albert Einstein, Thomas Edison, Peter Jennings, Wright Brothers, Michael J. Fox, Lucille Ball, Quentin Tarrantino, etc.

Famous College Dropuots: Tom Hanks, Bill Gates, Ted Turner, Steve Jobs, Michael Dell, Aaron Brown, Ron Burkle, 2/3 of Hollywood, etc.

Though a college education is the dream of most people, many of our largest political contributors have not finished college. Most of the votes we desparetely need to sway our direction with our arguments have not finished or participated in higher education. Are you guys paid off by the RNC to appear this dimwitted? Are most of you claiming to be anti-education?
02:27 PM on 09/08/2008
Oh for peet's sake, give me a break. Where does Palin fit exactly in that continuum of names? Ridiculous. The point is, she really really really tried to get the education, it's not like she had something better to do at that time, maybe other than moose hunting and kid producing.

Now consider Jefferson, Adams, Adams, Monroe, Kennedy, etc.....Ferraro, Clinton, Clinton,....

Palin is SCARY! We know NOTHING about her. This situation is just crazy, and that people buy into this? - Stupefying.

At least Obama has been debating in the public eye for some time. Palin is a glib fad. Arying to equate her with Hillary must be very insulting to Hillary. The mere fact that they are trying to sell that she is a Hillary equal tells me that Reps are like the stupid, but very calculated, conniving kid in class, who just steals from the smart kid and passes it on as his own. Reps plagiarize and will do anything, anything to win. It’s disgusting, but it works for them because they are actually counting on people being naïve, good at heart, and ignorant.

The Rep elite, as they stated themselves at the Convention, basically believe that the world is evil and they are the only agents of goodness, hence, any means are justified in their view. They bring war and death follows them.

The world, though, is not evil. My neighbor is not evil person because he’s Chinese or Kuban, or Russian, or Muslim. The world, on the very human level, is filled with people who struggle to make it better every day. The human condition is the same whether you live in Europe, Russia, America. People there are just like us, scared of crazy governments making it difficult for the average, hard-working person to make ends meet.

America wake up, you are heading in the wrong direction.
