POKANE, Wash. - Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin attended five colleges in six years before graduating from the University of Idaho in 1987.

Federal privacy laws prohibit the schools from disclosing her grades, and none of the schools contacted by The Associated Press could say why she transferred. There was no indication any of them were contacted as part of the background investigation of Palin by presidential candidate John McCain's campaign.

"Our office was not contacted by anyone," said Tania Thompson, spokeswoman for the University of Idaho in Moscow.

Palin, the governor of Alaska, was born in Idaho. Her family moved when she was only a few months old to Alaska, where she was raised.

She began college at Hawaii Pacific University, a private, nonsectarian school in Honolulu. She attended only as a freshman during the fall of 1982, school spokeswoman Crystale Lopez said.

Then known as Sarah Louise Heath, she was in the business administration program as a full-time student, Lopez said.

"We're trying to track down someone who knew her," Lopez added.

From Hawaii Pacific, Palin transferred to North Idaho College, a two-year school in Coeur d'Alene, about 30 miles east of Spokane. She attended the college as a general studies major for two semesters, in spring 1983 and fall 1983, spokeswoman Stacy Hudson said.

"We were not able to track down club affiliations or anything," Hudson said.

The school identified one of her professors but he did not remember her, Hudson said.

Prior to her selection by McCain, the North Idaho College Alumni Association notified Palin in June she would be the recipient of its 2008-2009 Distinguished Alumni of the Year Award.

From North Idaho College, Palin transferred 70 miles south to the University of Idaho, the state's flagship institution. She majored in journalism with an emphasis in broadcast news. She attended Idaho, whose mascot is the Vandals, from fall 1984 to spring 1985.

She then returned to Alaska to attend Matanuska-Susitna College in Palmer in fall 1985.

Then she returned to Idaho, for spring 1986, fall 1986 and spring 1987, when she graduated. Despite her journalism degree, she does not appear to have worked for the college newspaper or campus television station, school officials said. She worked briefly as a sportscaster for KTUU in Anchorage after she graduated college.

The McCain campaign did not have an immediate comment on Palin's higher education record.

In a recent interview with the school's alumni magazine, before her selection to run on the GOP ticket, she explained that her curiosity and love of writing made journalism a natural choice.

"I was always asking everyone the questions, and I still am today," Palin told the magazine.

The University of Idaho is taking advantage of Palin's nomination. A prominent photograph of her is featured on the school's Web site.

Gawrsh, all that booklearnin means she's smarter than the average Bullwinkle. She was clever enought to get her son a gen-u-wine "Get out of Jail Free" card. Heck, she could even convince half the country that up is down .

This is so typical, instead of talking about Palin we need to be talking about issues. Like healthcare, economy etc. When will we ever get to those? 1 or 2 TV debates? I agree she needs to tell us EVERYTHING about her SOON. Why not do her own media conference or website video? Where is she hiding?

Yes, and that is exactly the reason we are talking about the newest fad. Why talk about issues when you can get all the excitement from a soap opera.

Reps are taking their ideas from TV programming (I threw my TV out a while ago) which turns people's brains into mush.

She attended enough colleges to start her own athletic conference. While we should all be given a little slack for our youthful follies, this looks alot like a maturity issue. She must have been a late bloomer.

Perhaps she was kicked out because she could not carry out the necessary average grades : That's what happened to one of my cousins so I know how it might work. One thing is for sure, she was not a grade A student, otherwise that would not have happen.

However, since the institutions can't release her grades, the GOP will probably release rigged versions of them to suffocate the topic has always.

Let me ask you this : Would you wan't to be taken care of by a doctor that could only get 60% grades and had to change schools in order to continue with his studies? ------> I think the only answer to this is NO!

My point is that it is the same case as Palin for VP of President : Do you wan't the best and the brightest to direct the country or a clueless and troublesome nobody? ----> Asking the question is answering it...

lol. ok it took this girl 6 years to get a BA in journalism, and McCain graduated in the bottom 5% of his class.. and now MCcain is up by 3 in the gallup poll over Obama that graduated from Columbia University , then went on to get his Law Degree from Harvard where he graduated at the top of his class and also was the president of the Harvard Law Review....

LOL>.I see why the WOLRD laughs at the US.. we are a nation that likes to elect DUMMIES as president.. it took George W. Bush 10 years to get his degree..

I agree. We will be laughed to scorn. In other leading countries folks like this are completely ignored.

I can't believe it! But they say dummies elect dummies, because they can identify with each other. The problem is that the GOP really think people are STUPID, as Obama suggested. This election will be very revealing!

Putting up a story about her going to a number of schools before earning her degree is evidence of your lack of any substantial argument on why McCain and her shouldn't be elected.

Are you serious? This is because you neo-cons have only 3 requirements for the office of the president

1. They MUST belive in god
2. They MUST Be pro-life
3. They MUST be someone I want to have a beer with.

Yeah, great criteria

There is nothing wrong with transferring from one school to another or even to another ... however collecting your credits from 5 different colleges does make it more difficult to become fully immersed in your major - you may technically fulfill the graduation requirements - but you likely come up short on substance & depth. It is difficult to see how a "hopscotch" approach to completing college can have much of a "scholarly" nature to it - not much opportunity to develop your knowledgebase.
I am left with the impression that Palin is an extraordinarily "driven" individual capable of thrashing about and making a name for herself ... mostly by doing things "her way" - but seems to lack the ability to pursue a disciplined program or plan of action over an extended period of time - and apparently not very willing to take the time to absorb different points of view.
as I have said to friends - "this BULL in lipstick is the Pits"

Her hopping from college is somewhat important, in that it is another piece of information in her sketchy resume.

When you stack up her inexperience with Obama's inexperience, I'd rather have a person who was near the top of Harvard Law than someone who skipped from school to school without much significant in her resume there.

no Obama is not running against this chick but for some reason everyone keeps saying she is just as qualified as Obama, which is bogus, because just on education alone. Obama slams her

Well there's the fact that it's very pertinent to weigh heavily the idea of Palin essentially becoming POTUS if you vote for the GOP in this election, considering that the man at the top of the ticket is a 72 year predicate cancer survivor. Also if we're talking purely Obama vs. McCain, I'd rather have a young man who was near the top of his class at Harvard Law and has proven himself to be thoughtful and very cerebal thinker and decision, than the whole "72 year old brash and impulsive maverick" brand of decision making practiced by McCain. I've had more of this "cowboy diplomacy" bullsh*t over the past 8 years than I stand. It's time that we have some actual intelligence and logic in the White House, not some war thirsty old man on the brink of senility or a former beauty queen jesus freak who thinks US foreign policy is biblical prophecy or whatever.

well, when the info about her mental instability come out, then let's discus it ...

and as insulting as your handle is, you are correct. McCain the 72 year old, 4-time cancer survivor, his his opponent. Lest we not forget that and the fact that McCain's own father died at 70 .. now let's see if we want the pentecostal pit-bull in the biggest chair in the country?

Whaddya think? Think she may be controlled by the neocons?

I went to 2 colleges, and I'll tell you what, as long as your credit's transfer there really is no problem at all. I lost 3 credits (one course) in my transfer, but, all that really matters is the name of the school that gives you your diploma.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 05:47 AM on 09/08/2008

two colleges, yeah...but five?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 06:27 AM on 09/08/2008

"There's no problem at all"? No one is saying it is illegal, but points to her ability to complete a task or to her lack of intelligence.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 08:29 AM on 09/08/2008

Going to a number of schools in you opinion is evidence of lack of intelligence? How does going to a number of schools point to intelligence or lack thereof? It appears to me that going to a number of schools and completing her degree actually points to her drive to succeed.

5 colleges in 6 years......that's serious jumping around. I'm sure there are many of us who shared a finance or maturity issue when we started our college careers, however I doubt less than 1% of us attended 5 colleges in 6 years. I could very well understand a military child having to go through this, however there are very, very few other reasons to explain this behavior. My best guess are grades or significant maturity issues.
I'm from a household of 8 kids, of which 7 of us attended universities with a total of 6 graduates. No member ever attended more than 2 schools. My parents could not afford to send us to college as well.
I want answers and if not, I ask you "Is this the person you want to trust your nation to, in the event of an emergency to a 72 year president?" I think not!

6 years for a BA is no accomplishment- If she had a Masters degree that would account, but losing money on non-transferrable credits? That's bad planning.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:31 AM on 09/08/2008

Exactly. That's one aspect. And it's not just that it took 6 years. Because someone who took 6 years instead of 4 may have their reasons. But why did she have to attend 5 or 6 colleges for a 4 year degree?
