POKANE, Wash. - Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin attended five colleges in six years before graduating from the University of Idaho in 1987.

Federal privacy laws prohibit the schools from disclosing her grades, and none of the schools contacted by The Associated Press could say why she transferred. There was no indication any of them were contacted as part of the background investigation of Palin by presidential candidate John McCain's campaign.

"Our office was not contacted by anyone," said Tania Thompson, spokeswoman for the University of Idaho in Moscow.

Palin, the governor of Alaska, was born in Idaho. Her family moved when she was only a few months old to Alaska, where she was raised.

She began college at Hawaii Pacific University, a private, nonsectarian school in Honolulu. She attended only as a freshman during the fall of 1982, school spokeswoman Crystale Lopez said.

Then known as Sarah Louise Heath, she was in the business administration program as a full-time student, Lopez said.

"We're trying to track down someone who knew her," Lopez added.

From Hawaii Pacific, Palin transferred to North Idaho College, a two-year school in Coeur d'Alene, about 30 miles east of Spokane. She attended the college as a general studies major for two semesters, in spring 1983 and fall 1983, spokeswoman Stacy Hudson said.

Story continues below

"We were not able to track down club affiliations or anything," Hudson said.

The school identified one of her professors but he did not remember her, Hudson said.

Prior to her selection by McCain, the North Idaho College Alumni Association notified Palin in June she would be the recipient of its 2008-2009 Distinguished Alumni of the Year Award.

From North Idaho College, Palin transferred 70 miles south to the University of Idaho, the state's flagship institution. She majored in journalism with an emphasis in broadcast news. She attended Idaho, whose mascot is the Vandals, from fall 1984 to spring 1985.

She then returned to Alaska to attend Matanuska-Susitna College in Palmer in fall 1985.

Then she returned to Idaho, for spring 1986, fall 1986 and spring 1987, when she graduated. Despite her journalism degree, she does not appear to have worked for the college newspaper or campus television station, school officials said. She worked briefly as a sportscaster for KTUU in Anchorage after she graduated college.

The McCain campaign did not have an immediate comment on Palin's higher education record.

In a recent interview with the school's alumni magazine, before her selection to run on the GOP ticket, she explained that her curiosity and love of writing made journalism a natural choice.

"I was always asking everyone the questions, and I still am today," Palin told the magazine.

The University of Idaho is taking advantage of Palin's nomination. A prominent photograph of her is featured on the school's Web site.

Beware.... Continue on that slope and we will lose all of the blue collar workers in America and make her an even bigger hero. Every personal attack against Palin will backfire. Focus on the issues, not the person or the family ot Palin/McCain will win this election by over 5 points!

We shouldn't sugar coat anything. Blue collar workers better wise up. Those two do not represent their interests!!! Neither does the republican party.

That's what I'm afraid of. This election will be the most revealing ever about how the majority of Americans really is. A bunch of dummies or smart enough people to get the point that America is not about WAR and isolitionism. I have to say I'm scared.

To Whoislying, why is this sober reportage of actual events perceived by you as "an attack"? Either you have forgotten or you are blissfully unaware that there is much less information known about Sarah Palin than of any of the other candidates in this presidential race, and throughout our nation's history knowing all aspects of a person's story is essential to the vetting process for all of the candidates for the highest office in the land. It seems like you are more similar the bitter character you describe than the founder of this fine blog. Let freedom of the press ring, and keep your opinions to yourself, as that is the one who is lying...

She's an empty shell running away from tough programs. No wonder she's running away from
tough questions from reporters.

Not really sure why you are attacking someone for moving and attending 6 different colleges. Her father was a school teacher and mother a secretary, they could not afford to send all of the kids to college. So as another sibling graduates high school and goes off to college there is less money, so sometimes you have to switch to a cheaper college.

Democrats usually want more money for social programs, why bash her instead of understand her situation and use the info to bash the system where teachers can't send their kids to college?

I liked Huffington when she was a smart Republican and not an old bitter divorce. Now wasn't that rude? Why is it us and them? WHy so hateful and fearful? Americans are better than this and should be able to work together. How do you expect bipartisan ship from your elected officals and you can't handle it yourselves?

NOT TRUE. She got a scholarship for college when she won participated in the Miss Alaska contest in 1984, she graduated in 1983. I can only assume that since she placed so high that this was likely a full scholarship, but I do not know. Whatever the excuse, it is not money.

According to the biography written about her, she went to the first college in Hawaii with friends, but left after a week because it was too rainy. She then transferred to the second school with another friend.

Just FYI, so you don't jump to any conclusions that the problem was money. That is not to say that she may have lost those funds scholarship funds at a later date...

Too rainy?!

If she gets elected, does that mean that she may have to resign as VP because DC is too"monument-y" or too "cherry blossom-y" in the spring? Hopefully, we'll never know since she lacks "credibilit-y"

The few times I've seen this sort of jumping around, it was from students who had never left home and family for any length of time and were not mature enough to adapt to the change in environment. The fact that she went home to Alaska during this walkabout further suggest this. I certainly might be wrong and I'm not saying it as an attack or criticism. Folks mature at different rates. Palin gives every indication of being Alaskan to the bone, so I could see her not being too comfortable as a young adult in different living situations.

Ms. Palin ran from school to school to school to school to school because she found that each had a library with BOOKS inside. She is not a real big fan of books as we know. Wonder whether ABC will ask her about BOOKGATE.

I'm a liberal and while I do not support the McCain/Palin ticket I would like to point out that attending 5 different colleges does not mean that the VP nominee is an idiot. It's not uncommon to find that 4 year schools will get over 40% of their students from institutions that have transfer credits. For students who do attend more than one school during an undergraduate career there are often a combination of financial, family, and medical reasons which play a significant role.

One interpretation we can make from the attendance of five schools in six years is that the University of Idaho didn't accept all of Palins college credits. I faced a similar decision several years ago when I transferred from a two year college to a university. One school accepted me as a student but only as a sophomore - a second school accepted me as a junior. At the time I made the choice to attend the college that would take me as a junior. The universities in question had a selective admissions process and if I hadn't met their GPA requirements I would not have been accepted.

Several years after graduating I made the decision to return to school and work on my masters degree. Between having a teenager at home and working I've had to spend much of this process as a part time student. As such it's taken me close to 4 years so far.

She's been questioned about her background
And her political expertise.
Her educational experience
Should put you all at ease.

She started out at UH-Hilo
in 1982.
Left after a few weeks out there - -
The rain just spoiled the view.

Made her way to Honolulu
To Hawaii Pacific College
Assured of her good judgment
In her pursuit of greater knowledge.

She finished that semester
In the Fall of '82
Then decided that Hawaii
Had advantages too few.

She headed East to Idaho
For two semesters where
At the North Idaho College
She was a "General Studies" major there.

Then she moved to U of Idaho
In the Fall of '84.
Stayed only two semesters
She was ready to move some more!

She studied up in Alaska
In the Fall of '85
Then went back down to Idaho
Such a beautiful long drive!

Whew! In '87 she graduated from Idaho
With a Journalism degree.
Now she's ready to be Vice-President
In the "Land of the Free" !!

Can you imagine if a democrat, especially Obama, had picked someone with this background. The sneering, belittling criticism would have monumental ! And they would have said, now we have two lightweights on same ticket. He picks Biden, a thoughtful man w/35 experience, especially foreign policy, and they say, see that proves he knows he has no experience, Either way, Obama can't win. And the MSM picks up on this mindset, pushes it, and then people see it has valid, truthful, the facts.

These are the kinds of nonsense lies you have to expect out of the liberals about a woman. They can't attack her one on one, so they do their best to find nonsense reasons to attack her that are lies or distortions of the truth.

Of course, Obama would not resort to this directly. He just funds it.

This totally sexist attack on Palin by CNN, supposed liberals that supposedly support women's rights gets right to the center of why the media lies. They have an agenda, and it is not balanced news.

I guess that's why American parents are so much against sending their kids to school. You know an education is just a waste of time. And you're the perfect example.

With the casual, flippant way that John McCain chose Palin, this tells me that, like Bush, he only wants tow-the-line cronies instead of qualified, experienced people for the most important job(s) in the world.

If McCain becomes President, this just underscores that we can look forward to more "heck of a job Brownies", Alberta Gonzales', Monica Goodlings...

Sarah Palin took all that time, all those schools to get a bachelor's degree? Something is quite wrong with her, as also revealed through the family drama and padded resume. She is certainly NOT what I would call intelligent--cunning, perhaps, but not intelligent. And she certainly does NOT bring an air of class to this ticket--more like backwoods Jerry Springer-type class. Why do you think the McCain camp is banning all press (unless it's a fluff tabloid or talk show) from news interviews with Palin? They don't do that for someone with encyclopedic knowledge on world affairs (such as Biden has)--they would most certainly show that off. Obama and Biden are clearly the more grounded, more family-oriented, more intelligent, and safer choice for America. This independent voter in the heartland of America, recognizes insanity and pandering when he sees it, and I will vote (Democrat) appropriately.

However Harry Truman did not jump from a nobody into the Presidency.

He was elected Jackson county Judge for 3 term
He served as a US Senator for 10 years
He was Vice President

All before becoming President. Maybe Sarah should put in some similar time so we could all get a chance to know what she stands for before jumping into Vice Presidency.

Guys, what's your problem with Sarah? After all, she's not running for POTUS, John McCain and Barack Obama are. I cannot remember anything like this in history - everybody (from the left) is suddenly SOOOOOOOO concerened about the VP-nominee of the OTHER party...

Why don't you focus on the simple fact, that your own VP-nominee said that BaraK Obama is not ready to be a president (the famous "on the job training" thing), and so did your own Hilary? Why?

C'mon, tell me the truth: aren't you simply scared that McCain/Palin are winning?

have nervous breakdowns ????? SOMETHING IS ROTTEN IN DENMARK!
and unless they tell us then it's open up too suspect. It's their call because
until they come clean and put everything to rest. They will have no PEACE.

She wants the job. Then clear up all the lies. Sarah is a heartbeat away
