POKANE, Wash. - Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin attended five colleges in six years before graduating from the University of Idaho in 1987.

Federal privacy laws prohibit the schools from disclosing her grades, and none of the schools contacted by The Associated Press could say why she transferred. There was no indication any of them were contacted as part of the background investigation of Palin by presidential candidate John McCain's campaign.

"Our office was not contacted by anyone," said Tania Thompson, spokeswoman for the University of Idaho in Moscow.

Palin, the governor of Alaska, was born in Idaho. Her family moved when she was only a few months old to Alaska, where she was raised.

She began college at Hawaii Pacific University, a private, nonsectarian school in Honolulu. She attended only as a freshman during the fall of 1982, school spokeswoman Crystale Lopez said.

Then known as Sarah Louise Heath, she was in the business administration program as a full-time student, Lopez said.

"We're trying to track down someone who knew her," Lopez added.

From Hawaii Pacific, Palin transferred to North Idaho College, a two-year school in Coeur d'Alene, about 30 miles east of Spokane. She attended the college as a general studies major for two semesters, in spring 1983 and fall 1983, spokeswoman Stacy Hudson said.

"We were not able to track down club affiliations or anything," Hudson said.

The school identified one of her professors but he did not remember her, Hudson said.

Prior to her selection by McCain, the North Idaho College Alumni Association notified Palin in June she would be the recipient of its 2008-2009 Distinguished Alumni of the Year Award.

From North Idaho College, Palin transferred 70 miles south to the University of Idaho, the state's flagship institution. She majored in journalism with an emphasis in broadcast news. She attended Idaho, whose mascot is the Vandals, from fall 1984 to spring 1985.

She then returned to Alaska to attend Matanuska-Susitna College in Palmer in fall 1985.

Then she returned to Idaho, for spring 1986, fall 1986 and spring 1987, when she graduated. Despite her journalism degree, she does not appear to have worked for the college newspaper or campus television station, school officials said. She worked briefly as a sportscaster for KTUU in Anchorage after she graduated college.

The McCain campaign did not have an immediate comment on Palin's higher education record.

In a recent interview with the school's alumni magazine, before her selection to run on the GOP ticket, she explained that her curiosity and love of writing made journalism a natural choice.

"I was always asking everyone the questions, and I still am today," Palin told the magazine.

The University of Idaho is taking advantage of Palin's nomination. A prominent photograph of her is featured on the school's Web site.

She was "always asking everyone the questions"? Too bad she doesn't want to answer any now. They have got her wrapped up tight.

with her outspokeness, i don't think she needs any protection in answering questions. if she doesn't like the question, she can always give a smart ass remark!!!!

This country is littered with armies of ivy league lawyers, businessmen, and politicians who haven't accomplished a fraction of what this shoeless hillbilly from Alaska has achieved.

surprised at Americans for allowing johninsane to get away with not vetting Sarah.. Something is wrong with her. She lies about too many important things. She does

Regardless of a person's origins, one's journey can be filled with revelations, an increased intellect, and a humbling that only comes with a learned-empathy for others' suffering. One need not begin their journey at Harvard or Yale or Wellesley to experience real intellectual growth and a greater understanding of the problems facing our world. Transferring schools can be a sign that one believes the journey to become wise is more important than how others perceive you.

I attended six colleges in five years. I started off at a four year school, but it was dominated by people and an administration that did not share my views in very important ways. I transferred once and took classes at other schools along the way, but I got my degree and I'm very proud of all the work that went into it.

While I may feel an academic kinship to Governor Palin, none of this makes me "relate" to her in a way that overrides her views on abortion, religious fanaticism, fiscal responsibilities in relation to public services, and contempt for community organizers' role in our country.

It's not that she's an inexperienced politician - and it isn't even that she isn't the most qualified woman politician - it's that she stands for all that I fight against in my life. I am making a choice to put my politics and my body ahead of my sex's glass ceiling - how else can I live with myself?

I promise you if Palin becomes VP which means McCain is the President...USA will have officially entered the status of under developed country.

We can then thank our school system for preparing sops for the politicians to con.

Obama is not African. He is American. America is made up of many people whose ancestors originated from other countries, or haven’t you heard. If you don’t like the man’s politics than by all means don’t vote for him. If your vote will be based on pigmentation, you shame yourself and all Americans.

They are going after the crowd that took five years to go though HIGH school. To those people she's "real smart".

Thankfully Gwen Ifill will be moderating the VP debate. How will the right use the sexist card? All Gwen has to do is ask her the difference between Sunni and Shia (and Palin can't ask McCain, because he does not know).

8.5 years, three schools, founded a non-profit theater group. Organized a union. One big Union. Negotiated my first union contract. Education is a life experience, not a degree.

You are probably not qualified to be the VP but if by chance you happen to have an impressive reform and executive experience record like hers, I'd at least hear you out before I dissed you.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 05:26 PM on 09/07/2008

I'm asking why did she go to so many colleges, what are you talking about. Btw, her reform record is a joke, and governing a state smaller in population than my city for less than 2 years isn't impressive to me, nor is being a mayor of 6500 people. It takes a little more than that to impress me. One more thing, asking why isn't a diss, it's a legitimate question for someone who could be leading my Country in a split second.

You know I just listened to McCain say he wanted the best and the brightest with him in Washington. Wow is this what he calls the "brightest. Look I too went to 5 colleges in 6 years so I hate to put myself down, but I would never be qualified to be VP. I think it's sad to see that a big percentage of voters think she is qualified to be VP and even President knowing so little about her. If she can attack Obama on his "community organizer" experience then why can't Obama go after her on her education.

Sarah Palin is the political equivalent of the sports fan whose favorite team is the one who just claimed the title. She is incapable of understanding the plight of a Cubs fan because she's too busy buying Red Sox merchandise. Nobody will take Sarah seriously until she reaches into her closet and pulls out that Cubs jersey...

Let's be honest, if she had been in the running to be the presidential candidate for the Republican party, she wouldn't have been the final candidate to accept the nomination. Now we're supposed to believe she is prepared to be in line for the presidency. Be afraid, be very afraid.

There was a bit of truth in Sarah's speech to the RNC where she suggested that if only we had been drilling in ANWR for the last 10 years, we wouldn't be experiencing the foreign oil dependency we are today. However, if McBush hadn't voted against tax breaks for alternative energy EVERY time a bill came to the table, we would be much further along in a LONG TERM solution to reduce our dependency on oil in general, and we wouldn't be having this insane argument that the only solution is more drilling off-shore and in ANWR. Look at the BIG PICTURE people.
