POKANE, Wash. - Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin attended five colleges in six years before graduating from the University of Idaho in 1987.

Federal privacy laws prohibit the schools from disclosing her grades, and none of the schools contacted by The Associated Press could say why she transferred. There was no indication any of them were contacted as part of the background investigation of Palin by presidential candidate John McCain's campaign.

"Our office was not contacted by anyone," said Tania Thompson, spokeswoman for the University of Idaho in Moscow.

Palin, the governor of Alaska, was born in Idaho. Her family moved when she was only a few months old to Alaska, where she was raised.

She began college at Hawaii Pacific University, a private, nonsectarian school in Honolulu. She attended only as a freshman during the fall of 1982, school spokeswoman Crystale Lopez said.

Then known as Sarah Louise Heath, she was in the business administration program as a full-time student, Lopez said.

"We're trying to track down someone who knew her," Lopez added.

From Hawaii Pacific, Palin transferred to North Idaho College, a two-year school in Coeur d'Alene, about 30 miles east of Spokane. She attended the college as a general studies major for two semesters, in spring 1983 and fall 1983, spokeswoman Stacy Hudson said.

"We were not able to track down club affiliations or anything," Hudson said.

The school identified one of her professors but he did not remember her, Hudson said.

Prior to her selection by McCain, the North Idaho College Alumni Association notified Palin in June she would be the recipient of its 2008-2009 Distinguished Alumni of the Year Award.

From North Idaho College, Palin transferred 70 miles south to the University of Idaho, the state's flagship institution. She majored in journalism with an emphasis in broadcast news. She attended Idaho, whose mascot is the Vandals, from fall 1984 to spring 1985.

She then returned to Alaska to attend Matanuska-Susitna College in Palmer in fall 1985.

Then she returned to Idaho, for spring 1986, fall 1986 and spring 1987, when she graduated. Despite her journalism degree, she does not appear to have worked for the college newspaper or campus television station, school officials said. She worked briefly as a sportscaster for KTUU in Anchorage after she graduated college.

The McCain campaign did not have an immediate comment on Palin's higher education record.

In a recent interview with the school's alumni magazine, before her selection to run on the GOP ticket, she explained that her curiosity and love of writing made journalism a natural choice.

"I was always asking everyone the questions, and I still am today," Palin told the magazine.

The University of Idaho is taking advantage of Palin's nomination. A prominent photograph of her is featured on the school's Web site.

I appreciate the investigation into Palin's educational background, and I'm NOT voting for McCain/Palin. However, I want to suggest that transferring schools does not necessarily signify low intelligence. I'm a pretty intelligent individual (though not qualified for, nor interested in, the office of VP), and a high academic achiever, and I transferred colleges multiple times. It took me longer to get my undergraduate degree than average, but I needed a few years to figure some things out and get my footing in the "real world." Does that make me less intelligent? No. In fact, transferring and taking time off from school gave me a lot of life experience that eventually set me ahead of many of my peers. I was so much more directed than my classmates during the final years of my undergrad experience because I had a much better idea of why I was there, and what I wanted out of my experience. I'd like to know what degrees Palin achieved. Did she get an Associate's degree, followed by Bachelor's and Master's degrees? If so, I see nothing wrong with that. If she did all that fishing around just to get her Bachelor's degree, then maybe it indicates something.

I'm not defending her policies, or suggesting that she makes a qualified VP - but her academic history (especially if we don't know anything about her grades) may not necessarily be a good indicator of her intelligence, and might be an unfair critique without more information.

Palin went to five colleges. That makes her education so much better than Obama's who didn't go to as many. Dang. She always trumps Obama in matters of experience. Remember her community organizing comments. Those colleges can't even remember her.

I feel so sorry for McCain. It must be sad to know that people are voting for Palin and not him. How do you become so excited over a person you know nothing about and has only been in the public eye for a week or so? I wonder if John is embarrassed?

Goober Nation rejoices for she is one of them. As for McCain, he was born an Id*ot; Goober Nation rejoices even more.

Come on you guys, this was an easy one - SHE DIDN'T LIKE THE BOOKS, DUH!!
I have to laugh so I don't cry. This VP choice is a joke. Close your eyes for a moment and really imagine this woman running the country. She will be the leader of the entire free world! They cannot be serious! Ok let's click our heels and count to 3 and she'll be back in Kan...I mean Alaska. Ready...

I can't think of another country in this world, free or not, that would consider her its leader. What would happen most likely if they get into the WH is that the U.S. will be ridiculed and lose whatever respect we have left.

Sarah Palin is the political equivalent of the sports fan whose favorite team is the one who just claimed the title. She is incapable of understanding the plight of a Cubs fan because she's too busy buying Red Sox merchandise. Nobody will take Sarah seriously until she reaches into her closet and pulls out that Cubs jersey...

Sarah Palin the biggest rock star in the republican party, but is she ready to lead? someone need to look into her background deeply.

We have to remember that Rev. Wright and Bill Ayers are not running for office and cannot shape policy!

Sarah Palin can, we need to know about her.

Obama has been campaigning for almost 2 years and he still had to 're-introduce' himself to the american people. This woman comes out a few days ago, insults large swaths of society and then goes into hiding?

Come on, education and experience are over rated. Just look at W, sorry bad example.
Ummmmmmm, you can't use that argument that's sexist.

She knows about Russia, it's close to Alaska, and she knows about energy since they drill for oil in her state, and she knows about education since she tried 6-collleges and attempted to get books banned at her library. She clearly is the most qualified Republican woman. Now if they can only find a black guy in thier party...hmmmm. Perhaps McCain can say there was black in his family tree somewhere back when, then they'll get all of votes.

WOW ! This chick really scampers up the proverbial ladder

Sarah Louise Heath Palin served two terms on the Wasilla, Alaska city council from 1992 to 1996, then won two terms as mayor of Wasilla from 1996 to 2002. After an unsuccessful campaign for lieutenant governor of Alaska in 2002, she chaired the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission from 2003 to 2004 while also serving as Ethics Supervisor of the commission.
In November 2006, Palin was elected the governor of Alaska, becoming the first woman and youngest person to hold the office.

She sure is a restless individual.
She doesn't seem to want to stay and complete any projects she starts. Could that be why she had to ask "Exactly what does the Vice-president do ?" She's not certain she will stay if it's not to her liking ? Perhaps a new opportunity will emerge two years into the McCain administration and she will want to change jobs yet again ?

Perhaps we can forgive her for not being on the receiving end of Affirmative Action getting a free education. Probably she had to pay for her education and lapses in attendance could have been due to that. This is not fact, just something I'm guessing at -- much like you all are guessing at your "facts". What it shows me is she has tenacity. Despite having had to transfer due to circumstances we are all as yet unaware of at this time, she stuck it out, got that degree! For any other women in any such circumstances, we would applaud her. She got that degree, and look at what she has done with it! If she were black and Pro-Choice, you would be applauding her efforts, her achievements and the fact that she far exceeded the scope of her degree, but she stands up for unborn babies, so you are trashing her. Hypocrites, all of you. Whatever your political leanings, we should be happy to see a woman who has achieved so much, even without having the benefits of a free education or getting into an elite school based mostly on her color. This country has come a long way -- some of it in the wrong direction, but this is still a great country, the best on earth, and we must quit this rancorous bickering over things that do not matter and start applauding one another's achievements and working together, finding common ground, or we're headed to destruction.

"She made the claim that, families with 'special needs' children would have an advocate and friend in the Whitehouse. What she didn't reveal in her speech is that upon becoming Governor of Alaska, she slashed funding to 'special needs' educational programs."

Palin Slashed "Special Schools" Funding In Alaska

Are you willing to dismiss the above hypocrisy in deference to a Likable smile ?

Affimative action will get you into Harvard or Yale but it will not keep you in.You have to earn the right to stay and perform to graduate.Obama took the same test that the white boys took and had to pass just like they did. Affirmative Action does not pay for your student loans. I say get rid of affirmative action so we can beat you people fair and square with no excuses.
