POKANE, Wash. - Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin attended five colleges in six years before graduating from the University of Idaho in 1987.

Federal privacy laws prohibit the schools from disclosing her grades, and none of the schools contacted by The Associated Press could say why she transferred. There was no indication any of them were contacted as part of the background investigation of Palin by presidential candidate John McCain's campaign.

"Our office was not contacted by anyone," said Tania Thompson, spokeswoman for the University of Idaho in Moscow.

Palin, the governor of Alaska, was born in Idaho. Her family moved when she was only a few months old to Alaska, where she was raised.

She began college at Hawaii Pacific University, a private, nonsectarian school in Honolulu. She attended only as a freshman during the fall of 1982, school spokeswoman Crystale Lopez said.

Then known as Sarah Louise Heath, she was in the business administration program as a full-time student, Lopez said.

"We're trying to track down someone who knew her," Lopez added.

From Hawaii Pacific, Palin transferred to North Idaho College, a two-year school in Coeur d'Alene, about 30 miles east of Spokane. She attended the college as a general studies major for two semesters, in spring 1983 and fall 1983, spokeswoman Stacy Hudson said.

"We were not able to track down club affiliations or anything," Hudson said.

The school identified one of her professors but he did not remember her, Hudson said.

Prior to her selection by McCain, the North Idaho College Alumni Association notified Palin in June she would be the recipient of its 2008-2009 Distinguished Alumni of the Year Award.

From North Idaho College, Palin transferred 70 miles south to the University of Idaho, the state's flagship institution. She majored in journalism with an emphasis in broadcast news. She attended Idaho, whose mascot is the Vandals, from fall 1984 to spring 1985.

She then returned to Alaska to attend Matanuska-Susitna College in Palmer in fall 1985.

Then she returned to Idaho, for spring 1986, fall 1986 and spring 1987, when she graduated. Despite her journalism degree, she does not appear to have worked for the college newspaper or campus television station, school officials said. She worked briefly as a sportscaster for KTUU in Anchorage after she graduated college.

The McCain campaign did not have an immediate comment on Palin's higher education record.

In a recent interview with the school's alumni magazine, before her selection to run on the GOP ticket, she explained that her curiosity and love of writing made journalism a natural choice.

"I was always asking everyone the questions, and I still am today," Palin told the magazine.

The University of Idaho is taking advantage of Palin's nomination. A prominent photograph of her is featured on the school's Web site.

As someone who also attended 5 schools in 6 years; if I did a background check on myself I'd find an interesting list of stuff. I imagine the same with Sarah here.

I'm really just looking for the porn tape at this point.

perhaps if some of the press engaged in journalism she might speak with them.If you search 'Sarah Palin" right now on this site you'll find 10 pages plus of Sarah Palin Articles.Guess How Many of them are about Politics and guess how many are out and out bashing to the point that they are actually against the posting rules for bloggers-everything from 'so and so in lipstick' to 'daughter knocked up' to 'baby daddy' to 'bad mother' and I ask you what male candidate ever had his style of dress, his parenting or his children looked at ?

This is wonderful! We have a story that is titled "Sarah Palin attends 6 colleges in 5 years as if that's a bad thing and then the 1st word of the story is Spokane, Washington misspelled.Unless there actually is a place called Pokane.Sorry for' pokane' fun at you .According to Google , there is a place called Pokane in the Congolese Republic, perhaps they might appreciate the logic that changing colleges several times makes a bad candidate choice.Vote O'bama , and stop bashing republicans to victory.

Her profs don't remember her. No wonder, she wasn't anywhere long enough to make an academic impression.
Palin should release her transcripts. It would be interesting to see the academic records of someone chosen as the #2 to a man who graduated in the bottom 1% of his class. After all, he MARRIED a beauty queen who recently admitted she has no idea what Roe v. Wade is all about. John clearly doesn't much care for women who, you know, think and get all...thinky about...like, things.

In any case, neither McCain nor Palin are running on their intellectual merits. One wonders, however, what motivates a woman to switch schools with such amazing frequency. I BET if we check with the former members of the relevant football and hockey teams, and the members of the jock frats, we'll find all kinds of great, "Remember that kegger..." stories that feature the former beauty queen.
Once you've starred at the Phi Del victory party, you just can't go back.

You are onto something with the probable connection to jock frats. Attraction to 'men of war', generally violent pastimes, and an aggressive, brainless stance on backwards issues would help her fit right into that crowd. I hope some evergetic journalist for the Nat Enquirer runs with this.

Well, for someone who was the dog catcher in Wasila, Palin has gotten pretty far... I do not think the American public/voters are so stupid to elect McPalin, but I might be wrong...

That Palin as dog-catcher story was a parody. Please don't repeated it as fact, it makes us look like we're willing and eager to believe anything negative about Palin. It gives the Republican's ammunition to deny the true negatives.

TO ALL WHO FEAR A PRETTY WOMAN CAPABLE OF SWITCHING SCHOOLS...........Wow, how quick people are to assume there is some "evilness" behind Mrs. Palin attending different schools during her educational pursuits.
I obtained by degree in Biology in 3 years prior to going to medical school and went to 4 different schools to make it happen!!! To complete my degree within 3 years, I needed all scholarships and grants as well as a way to complete classes around my 2 part time jobs ....to get it all done I switched "schools with amazing frequency."
. The schools offered different scholarships and financial aid for different courses.......I graduated with a 3.8 from University of South Florida with a BS in Biology. All the schools communicated my grades to each other. No evilness there.........

Also, it's not Mrs. Palin's fault that she is a pretty lady...... Being goodlooking and smart is a bonus and a hinderance..... Many times, my blonde hair and 38's got alot more attention than my 3.8...maybe my TA's,Profs, and "Mr. right then's" don't remember my name either......life is just that way ....
I guess with my own experiences, as a female professional, I can relate to Mrs. Palin.
I doubt you will find anything underhanded regarding the reason for Mrs. Palin's attendance at multiple schools.... Maybe the profs. don't remember her...maybe they wish they had.... She's a fantastic VP pick......

it's just that in THIS case it's like "pretty is as pretty does". and the does is questionable especially when the facts come out!

when anyone especially a female chooses to use the pretty part to live her life to cater to a camera it creates a empty suit/dress for the female.

another way to looking at it is the view that mcC has sold his soul for this election. that's two of them.

everyone needs to be aware of the glossing over, superficial way of getting people elected to public office. the process in this situation has NEVER been clear. not in the history of this USA. i'm looking forward to the story of people in other countries' views of this historical situation.

There is no reason to assume her academic record is poor simply because she switched schools. Many Americans change schools -- or perhaps you are out of touch.
Also, it is far more likely for a student comfortable at one school for 4 years to fall into the party crowd than for a student who is new to the area and who leaves soon after arriving.

I know it is hard on you elitest libeals to have a respectable milk toast conservative white girl (who by the way, was not carried to promince by a husband) embarass your Ivy league socialist boy. Once again, good old fashioned middle America will set the course of the nation for the next 8 years.

Dear sir:

Your post is a veritable portrait of your mentality. For example:

"milk--white" ? do you mean milky white as is the Republican Party and Good old fashioned middle America?

I am not and have never been an "elitest libeal" nor have I ever belonged to an ivy leaque socialist party.

Are you saying that some wife was "prominced" by her husband. Very nasty business, indeed

I do pray that America will be saved from the course of good old fashoined illiterate America

I am willing to put my tax dollars into your continuing education

As kuffar sits, typing GOP dis-information into 6 year old HP desktop in a dimly lit McCain campaign office, he stops briefly to re-affirm that he does have a soul. He reaches to touch the framed picture of James Dobson he is allowed to keep in his cubicle, and continues typing.

Is it true that Palin’s son signed for Iraq because of a trouble with the law? Since Sarah Palin refuses to answer any questions, there is no other way but to ask the Internet users if there is any truth in this Palin junior story?
Sarah is such a caring mother…. Her 18-year old son signed for the war his mother "was not concentrated on;" her older daughter is pregnant out of wedlock; her premature baby (Sarah was hopping airplanes while 8 months pregnant to be around the Oilmen in Dallas) was left to other people's care since he was 3-day old.. The woman is a heartless monster.

I'm more curious about what kind of grades she made at these colleges. The campaign has been very quiet about that, so am assuming she did not graduate with honors. Five colleges is a bit excessive, so have to wonder if she didn't flunk out of at least one of the schools.

I'm on my 5th college and my cumulative g.p.a. is 3.85. I've never flunked out of a class, much less a college. I don't know why people would assume Palin has.

You forgot to mention in your post that the Republicans should also be blamed for the poor quality of our educational system. A good example of the failure of this sytem is that some people in these posts can't spell and have trouble with poor syntax and grammar.

Wouldn't you agree?

This country needs someone who is intelliegent to lead! This country is facing a lot of challanges. We are already getting behind, we lost and wasted 8 years! People just want someone like themselves to lead country, so we should all lead country together, why do we need a leader?
I just can not believe how and why people think this way. I will never understand it. This is why I am here I guess.
I am getting very frustrated when I see or hear a signel mother, making $40,000/yr, stuggling paying the bills, no health care insurance....wants to vote for BUSH, or Palin just becasue they are anti-abortion. It is very Sad!
I think we are American are very consistantly putting the religion in play in the politics, it is not only not going away any sooner, also it is playing well and getting stronger position. I just think this is absolutely wrong. This is not leading the country forward. The eight year is the very good example!

Finally. The puzzle has been solved.
College is where Sarah learned how to Flip Flop.
"I'm for this college, now I'm against it".
All Sarah wants is Air Time..and lots of it.
Sarah..unscripted.
I've got whiplash just thinking about it.

I was originally open minded to her candidacy, but this is frightening. I have seen two college changes but never this. It would be better to see no college with some work experience than four or five colleges. This was a last minute pick that must not have been vetted. An education check is standard in a mid level job, let alone VP of the free world.

So what if she changes schools? You shouldn't rush to judgment. Changing schools says NOTHING about her grades. Furthermore, she probably knows more about the country having experienced life in different places than someone who stayed at one college for 4 years.

We request you provide the citizens of the United States with the opportunity to see Governor Palin interviewed by a variety of news media outlets.

This election is a crucial one to us in terms of a wide range of domestic and foreign policy issues. Given the current concerns about numerous topics including health care, the rise in unemployment, the tense relations between Russia and Georgia, and the ongoing war in Iraq, it is neither sufficient nor acceptable that we hear Governor Palin's opinions and ideas only through pre-written speeches, press releases and select interviews with "soft" and "friendly" news sources such as People magazine and Fox News...[for rest of text, click link above]
