Sebelius

In a Thursday morning conference call for reporters organized by the Democratic National Committee, Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius pushed back against the idea that Republicans have cornered the market on small-town American values.

"I live in the American heartland, and have been a governor [here] for six years," she said. "I don't know any mayor in any small town in Kansas -- and we have a lot of mayors of small towns -- who hires a lobbyist and goes after earmarks the way Sarah Palin did." On Tuesday, the Washington Post reported that, as mayor of Wasilla, Palin secured more than $27 million in federal earmarks for a town with only 6,700 residents.

In her speech, Palin made a not-so-subtle pitch to snatch the sympathies of small-town voters -- touting her own experience as a mayor, and contrasting her self-professed values with those of Barack Obama. "I might add that in small towns, we don't quite know what to make of a candidate who lavishes praise on working people when they are listening, and then talks about how bitterly they cling to their religion and guns when those people aren't listening," Palin said, referring to remarks Obama made at a San Francisco fundraiser earlier this year.

Sebelius would have none of it. "What I hear from these folks in the heartland, is that people want to know how they're going to afford health care ... whether they're going to keep their jobs [and manage] the cost of gas and groceries," Sebelius said. "Again last night, what we heard were partisan attacks and no real solutions. ... I work with a Republican legislature every day. And I know what people expect us to do ... is to roll up your sleeves and get the job done."

"There's a disconnect between the way she positions herself as a small-town mayor ... and an inside Washington strategy," Sebelius added. "The kind of persona she is putting forward is very enticing, but I don't think it matches with her positions."

Florida Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz hammered a similar theme, saying that Palin "had a real problem with the truth last night" and adding that "even her hometown newspaper said she stretched the truth." (a reference to Thursday's Anchorage Daily News headline: "Some Of Palin's Remarks Stretch The Truth.")

Schultz also suggested that Palin had simply done a good job of robotically delivering an address she had little hand in crafting herself. "Whenever I have had to give significant speeches, I've spent a lot of time with the people assisting me in drafting remarks, adding my own voice," Schultz said. "Last night, I only heard Sarah Palin's voice [through] negative partisan attacks, with no substance or vision of where she thinks the country should go."

On Palin's effort to position herself and McCain as reformers, Schultz asked, "Where is the beef? Where is the evidence? Sarah Palin is not a reformer, she is under investigation in her home state for the abuse of power in trying to get a state trooper fired... If her best example of being a reformer was trying to sell a plane on E-Bay, that is not my definition of reform."

Shultz also questioned Palin's readiness to lead. "To say that her experience as a mayor of a town of 7,000 people ... makes her qualified to have her hands on the pillar of American foreign policy, if God forbid anything happens to John McCain, to suggest that is frightening," she said. "What kind of experience does Sarah Palin have to sit across the table from negotiators of the dangerous countries of this world?"

Obama adviser Robert Gibbs stepped in to rebut a few points of fact from Palin's speech. Specifically, he cited her reference to family members who own a small service station, saying they were precisely the kind of Americans who would receive "three times the tax relief" under Obama's tax plan. Gibbs also noted that Palin "picked up the worn-out playbook of Joe Lieberman," by claiming that Obama cannot point to any substantive legislative accomplishments. Even some of John McCain's surrogates know, Gibbs said, that the ethics and lobbying reforms in 2007, "the toughest since the scandal of Watergate," were passed due to Obama's work across party lines.

Palin would have to live in many small towns for anyone to take her comment seriously. It reminds me of living in Los Angeles. Some people might say it's a small town. I say it is all in the playing. Where on one side of town you go to a party and instead of asking you if you'd like a drink, they ask you what kind of refreshing emema you want. People are weird everywhere. There are smart people and there are desperate people. A rainbow of opportunities. It's a small world. Period. It exists of freedoms barriers and purposes. The triangle of life.

It is my understanding that Palin was chosen to appeal to evanlegicals and Christian Zionists. The fact that she is female is secondary.

The image of Sarah Palin we are being given is a fantasy...some Republican idea of what they think mainstream Americans want. I don't think the woman, herself, has much inner consistency. They said that she really was a reformer in Alaska but went against the Republican establishment, who are not her friends now. She certainly can't pull that game in playing with the Big Boys. They have picked her as a Poster Girl, someone who looks good, who has kids and is willing to parade them around, who is spunky enough to bring some "excitement" to the party, who has the necessary credentials to appeal to the Christian Right and is nasty enough to sling the mud at the "enemies.".

If, God forbid, she and McCain make it to Washington, how far will her spunk and sass get her? She was hidden away from the media for the first two days of the convention, while they drilled her into what to say. The lady is a puppet, as Bush was...another pretty face, dumb enough to take orders and to believe that she really is calling the shots. What will happen when she tries to buck the Republican establishment in Washington? She better keep her friends back in Alaska cuz she may need them.

I'm from Alaska - definitely in the minority because I'm not a maniacal Sarah fan - in fact, I saw through her from the beginning with all the self-serving hyperbole. As a long time career woman who has averaged approx 3,000 hours a year dedicated to my profession, I am extremely insulted by the choice of a running mate who hasn't really even come close to qualifying for a career as an executive, let alone as the second most powerful person in the world. My hope is that you, the nation, are smarter than we, the 49th state. The true measure of the person would have been for her to decline the VP offer until such a time as her family was more mature, her commitment as Governor was fulfilled, and her depth of knowledge was secured.

The Democrats would do well to deploy women of experience to counter Sarah Palin and her outrageous lies. Obama and Biden should not attack her but have people like Gov Sebelius and Senator Clinton do it , to avoid the sexism charge. I am a foreigner who lived and studied in the USA before going back home. I have great admiration for your Universities and the intellectually stimulating environments there. how is it then that you produce leaders at the top who are such intellectual lightweights as Palin and Bush? Sarah Palin frankly looks to me like an actress who had auditioned for the part and is acting her role - a chubby version of Diane Keaton... And people think she is great because she could read a speech somebody wrote for her. that qualifies you to be a VP..... Rest of the world thinks its dangerous, but we have no say. We have to bear the impact of people like Bush and the decisions they make

Yes, we need all Democratic women to stand up now! We need to see more of Sebelius (and others) on TV, not just on telephone conference calls to reporters. We need to see faces of true Democratic women on national TV speaking of Obama.

Lets see if Hillary will do what she said. I hope so. I think she will.

Our intellectual heavyweights are all working in corporations. It is more lucrative and their histories probably cannot pass muster so they can't be in the political limelight. Michael Milken is a case in point. Sarah Palin has experience in reading tele-prompters; she was once a weather girl or a sportscaster, so yes, your take on her being an actress is correct.

This is the best strategy against Gov. Pailn go after the substance of what she has done or not done. Also women need to know what her stance is on issues dealing with women and family issues. Go after her on climate change and creationism and trying to ban books from the library. Paint her as a an extremist who doesn't connect with mainstream America.

This is the woman who is so dedicated to "Right to Life" that she sanctions the cruel chase of wolves from airplanes, shooting the adults and leaving the cubs to starve. She has offered a bounty for wolf feet. She is suing the US Department of Interior for listing the Polar Bear on the endangered species list. I don't equate this with pro life!

That is such an excellent point.

But that Palinesque mindset is that God gave Man dominion over animals so it's our right to do what we want to and animals have no rights at all. Not only that, animals have no soul, so their deaths don't matter anyway. And God doesn't care. Nope, He only cries when we kill the babies...or help hasten along someone who is on a slow and agonizing journey toward death. Then God and Jesus weep real big tears 'casue that's a sin. Shootin' wolves? Heck, that's just sport.

The report I read was that she sanctioned the killing of the cubs too since their mothers had all been killed -- a direct violation of Alaska wildlife laws prohibiting the shooting of wolves nursing their pups. And chasing down wolves in a helicopter and shooting them from is really sporting, isn't it? She's monster of the worse kind since this sort of hunting is also illegal in the US. She out to be in jail, in a co-ed cell next to Karl Rove, George W Bush and Dick Cheney.

If she is so right to life then why did she undergo amniocentesis, a procedure that is dangerous to the fetus. If you had questions about whether or not you wanted to keep the baby if it had problems, then I can see having it done, but if you are pro life and wouldn't even think of having an abortion why would you take the chance of harming the fetus. And if the health of the child was uppermost in you mind, why would you not go to the nearest hospital as soon as you water broke instead of spending precious time to fly back to Alaska. Seems to me she did just about everything, short of abortion, to get rid of this child.

I am a stay at home mom and i don't like Sarah for a number of reasons. (bear with me)
1. She obviously abuses power on a state level. Can u imagine a national one?
2. She keeps throwing her pregnant teen and kids into the lime light but cries fowl when people comment on them.
3. She has WAAAYYY too much baggage to be president should McPOW go to the big POW camp in the sky. She has....
a. An investigation
b. A pregnant teen
c. A pregnant teen about to get married at 17 !!!
d. A pregnant teen who is about to get married and cant support a baby
e. A 4 month old down syndrome child
f. 4 other kids
That is just her family drama..... She cant seem to deal with the domestic conflict with her 17 year old...HOW CAN SHE DEAL WITH FOREIGN ONES??!!!! I wonder who is taking care of her kids while she is state skipping with McPOW ? What is more important....kids or becoming VP???

She has a husband. And she does have a support system: Grandparents, aunts and uncles.

Also, she lives in a small town where everybody knows everybody. It's very different culturally from big city life in the main land.

She is so much more problematic to the US to be concerned about her family. Her family has her back.

I know Debbie Wasserman Schultz was a close friend and very strong supporter of Hillary, so I am even more impressed with her that she has gotten behind Senator Obama and has been such a strong voice of reason this past week or so. I 've often watched her late at night in the House talking and making remarks with the other Democratic lawmakers.
Governor Sebelius is such an impressive woman, Senator Obama is lucky to have her for a spokeswoman. You could not ask for a more intelligent, capable and successful supporter.
These two women will make a huge difference across the country working for the Obama campaign.

Sebelius is great, but I don't think she would have helped get O more votes. She may have turned into a lighting rod for angry Hillary fanatics. I don't know.

She is primed for a significant position in the new administration. She has plenty of domestic experience as governor. Some position related to international affairs would set her up for the future. Sec of State? UN Ambassador?

Ahhh... dreams of how awesome an O administration would be..... time to bear down and make it happen

Right here, right now. More than ever at this critical juncture as we face the transcendant challenge of the 21st century (a McCain-Palin administration) we need the fighter in Hillary to come out swinging.

The sheer gall of Gov. Palin, who knows nothing of foreign policy or even what the Vice President's rersponsibilities are, needs to be exposed for what it is.

If you truly think Gov. Palin knows nothing of foreign policy please remember Sen. Biden said Obama's statement, televised during a debate, that he would go into Pakistan after Osama was naive and that Mr. Obama was not ready to be president. Hillary concurred and implied that Mr. Obama would not be competent to handle that 3 AM phone call. If going after Osama through Pakistan is such a stroke of genius why did President Clinton and Ms. Albright decide not to do just that when they had the opportunity before Osama became a household word on 9/11?

Do you fail to realize that Hillary had her opportunity and failed in action against an, as yet unknown, untested junior senator. It is so sad that you sound proud of your standard bearer Obama who is a product of the most corrupt political machine since Boss Tweed. You may need to read a few pages of history to understand those two references.

"Right here, right now. More than ever at this critical juncture as we face the transcendent challenge of the 21st century ...” I could not agree with you more except for your spelling of transcendent.

If you do some research you might just learn that being facetious regarding the duties of the Vice President is a historical inside joke. Lighten up, study history, and by all means get out and vote.

With all due respect.

If Sarah Palin were a democratic mother with 5 children; one with special needs, and a pregnant 17 year old un-wed daughter, having served as a Governor for less than two years- of a remote low populated state, and seeking to be vice president. The repugs would be on her case like "white on rice". These hypocrites would try to crush her, by subjecting her to unceasing character assassination.

She would be declared: in-experienced, un-tested, immoral, non-attentive, considered the cause of her daughter's pregnancy because she went un-counseled and unsupervised, too self centered- because she cares more about her career than her family. She would be the most "imperfect woman" alive.

These republican elites' write life only in their favor. It is the foundation of their self-centered culture. For Shame Repugs. The American People are getting an opportunity to see the true side of GOP. As they try to run from their record. Jurassic McCain is GWBushwack's twin, and make no mistake about that.

Their motive is to divide the working class against each other, using race, creed, sexual orientation, and religion. Don't be fooled.
