Sebelius

In a Thursday morning conference call for reporters organized by the Democratic National Committee, Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius pushed back against the idea that Republicans have cornered the market on small-town American values.

"I live in the American heartland, and have been a governor [here] for six years," she said. "I don't know any mayor in any small town in Kansas -- and we have a lot of mayors of small towns -- who hires a lobbyist and goes after earmarks the way Sarah Palin did." On Tuesday, the Washington Post reported that, as mayor of Wasilla, Palin secured more than $27 million in federal earmarks for a town with only 6,700 residents.

In her speech, Palin made a not-so-subtle pitch to snatch the sympathies of small-town voters -- touting her own experience as a mayor, and contrasting her self-professed values with those of Barack Obama. "I might add that in small towns, we don't quite know what to make of a candidate who lavishes praise on working people when they are listening, and then talks about how bitterly they cling to their religion and guns when those people aren't listening," Palin said, referring to remarks Obama made at a San Francisco fundraiser earlier this year.

Sebelius would have none of it. "What I hear from these folks in the heartland, is that people want to know how they're going to afford health care ... whether they're going to keep their jobs [and manage] the cost of gas and groceries," Sebelius said. "Again last night, what we heard were partisan attacks and no real solutions. ... I work with a Republican legislature every day. And I know what people expect us to do ... is to roll up your sleeves and get the job done."

"There's a disconnect between the way she positions herself as a small-town mayor ... and an inside Washington strategy," Sebelius added. "The kind of persona she is putting forward is very enticing, but I don't think it matches with her positions."

Florida Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz hammered a similar theme, saying that Palin "had a real problem with the truth last night" and adding that "even her hometown newspaper said she stretched the truth." (a reference to Thursday's Anchorage Daily News headline: "Some Of Palin's Remarks Stretch The Truth.")

Schultz also suggested that Palin had simply done a good job of robotically delivering an address she had little hand in crafting herself. "Whenever I have had to give significant speeches, I've spent a lot of time with the people assisting me in drafting remarks, adding my own voice," Schultz said. "Last night, I only heard Sarah Palin's voice [through] negative partisan attacks, with no substance or vision of where she thinks the country should go."

On Palin's effort to position herself and McCain as reformers, Schultz asked, "Where is the beef? Where is the evidence? Sarah Palin is not a reformer, she is under investigation in her home state for the abuse of power in trying to get a state trooper fired... If her best example of being a reformer was trying to sell a plane on E-Bay, that is not my definition of reform."

Shultz also questioned Palin's readiness to lead. "To say that her experience as a mayor of a town of 7,000 people ... makes her qualified to have her hands on the pillar of American foreign policy, if God forbid anything happens to John McCain, to suggest that is frightening," she said. "What kind of experience does Sarah Palin have to sit across the table from negotiators of the dangerous countries of this world?"

Obama adviser Robert Gibbs stepped in to rebut a few points of fact from Palin's speech. Specifically, he cited her reference to family members who own a small service station, saying they were precisely the kind of Americans who would receive "three times the tax relief" under Obama's tax plan. Gibbs also noted that Palin "picked up the worn-out playbook of Joe Lieberman," by claiming that Obama cannot point to any substantive legislative accomplishments. Even some of John McCain's surrogates know, Gibbs said, that the ethics and lobbying reforms in 2007, "the toughest since the scandal of Watergate," were passed due to Obama's work across party lines.

I have nothing but respect and admiration for Governor Sebelius. Why doesn't she tow the party line? Perhaps she loves this country more than the Republican nominee. But, wait! She was never a small town mayor or sportscaster. She probably never gutted a moose or fired a civil servant without cause.

She proved through her speech that she is worse than an insider--she is an insider wannabe, the most dangerous type of politician. I can see her sitting around a table, making threats more insane than those of the Iranian president, and spending us into more wars--with current allies.

It is really interesting to see all you Obama supporters impload! You cite Palin's supposed lack of experience. You will never admit it, but Obama's resume doesn't match her's, item for item.
Get over it...His empty suit is no match for McCain/Palin. This is the beginning of another time,
similar to the 1994 Republican surge into power. Watch out, there is a new team now for Hope & Change!

Yeah well Obama never did TV sports or beauty contests. He was busy helping a poor inner city community, which apparently is evil and un-American.

You keep changing you id and your name , but you are the same old troll. There is a world of difference, but you have no logic, no rational thought, so it would be wasted on you and yours. I will give you just one: teaching con law at the University of Chicago outranks being mayor of 6,200 souls any day. One of the president's most daunting tasks is governing under (and not in violation of) our precious constitution-- that wonderful gift from our founding fathers. W couldn't do it. Palin won't either.

heartsick said : Sarah Palin went to at least four different colleges before she claims she got a degree from the University of Idaho. I don't think the woman has a degree at all.
What a great poster girl for improving Education in America. Between Palin and McCain, I doubt they have a 2.0 GPA! That should make all of the Republicans who are so excited by her speech take gas! The dumbest possible ticket is supposed to lead us to a brighter, more prosperous future?"

Keep making up standards as we go along...just remember you got "nada" from zerObama. Can I get a "present" out there?

This is simple: the MSM must insist that her campaign staff release her records. We are entitled to know as voters whether or not she earned a degree and her grade point average.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 08:43 PM on 09/04/2008

I could care less about her GPA. I think it's important to know if she acquired the degree. If you think GPA's are requirement...could someone find Ted Kennedy's or Robert Byrd's? Better yet, Harry Reid's?

It is my understanding that she attended six colleges in five years. Sounds like she wanted to be an intellectual, just didn't have the ability.

This is all more of the same. And not well done. Lipstick on a pig? Come on. This crap went out with, well, it actually hasn't. There in lies the problem. This is not about issues, but reather a desperate bid to maintain control of what has turned out to be a very lucrative situation, for the haves. Those of us with a house to pay for, children to put thru college(?) and maybe squeeze a small vacation out of it, this smacks of extreme positions on simple issues.

The convention is drawing to a close now, and I am still waiting to hear one meaningful idea that can address the serious problems George Bush has left us to face, here and around the world. But all the Republicans have offered is a chorus of fearmongering and personal attacks. That has worked for them twice before, but America can't afford to allow it to go on.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 07:55 PM on 09/04/2008

What serious problems has George Bush left us to face? Gas prices are high due to global supply and demand. The household finance and housing market crash was not caused by Bush, and there has not been another terrorist attack on U.S. soil since the attrocity of 9/11 killed more people than the japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. The economy has recovered since the economic upheaval after those 9/11 attacks and we have battled foeign terrorist in Iraq while giving Iraqui citizens a chance at enjoying the liberty to vote that so many Americans take for granted. It would be great if people would be more specific when stating their points of view. Then we can get past the sound bites like "Bush Lied, Men Died" and have some intelligent discussions about the issues.

The more I hear about Palin the more I don't want to hear about her. She seems like a conniving, hateful, and shameless self promoter. She is being very calculating right now because she thinks it is helping her political career. She could give a flip about the American people, education, alternative energy, health care etc.

It is very apparent to me that she seems like a very self serving biitch. I'm terrified of what kind of VP or god forbid president she would be. She is grossly unqualified for either.

McSame and Palin are public SERVANTS, not BOSSES.

Oh, right: you Republican-supporting sloths wouldn't know what to do without a Big Daddy ordering you about.

Palin wants to be VP. That is the issue. She isn't qualified. That is the issue.

McSame's first decision is uproariously reckless to the degree of insane.

I wouldn't give either a respectable title after that, his, display of execrable judgment, and her sustained display of hate-speech as substitute for having anything worthwhile to offer -- such as solutions to the massive problems and destructiion done to our country and moral standing by her deranged, extremist, America-Hating political "party".

Obama isn't the issue: the commission of the war crime of torture is. McSame and Palin would love the opportunity to continue that Dark Ages policy of hate, hate, and more hate -- behind their lie of being Christian, and American.

The US is based upon the rule of law -- not upon rule by foul-mouthed hate-mongering moral lepers.

Thank you Ms. Sibelius. We need more women stepping into the limelight for the cause. I supported the Dream ticket because I knew McCain would choose a woman if Hillary was not chosen for the VP slot. Now women face a pretty stark choice but the choice is at least clear. The Dems need a whole women focused advertising blitz featuring strong women like Governor Sibelius.

My question where is Hillary?? Is she just waiting for 2012??? Why no comments??? Didn't she say this election is very important and we got one shot at it??? Or, maybe I was thinking about someone else..
