Sebelius

In a Thursday morning conference call for reporters organized by the Democratic National Committee, Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius pushed back against the idea that Republicans have cornered the market on small-town American values.

"I live in the American heartland, and have been a governor [here] for six years," she said. "I don't know any mayor in any small town in Kansas -- and we have a lot of mayors of small towns -- who hires a lobbyist and goes after earmarks the way Sarah Palin did." On Tuesday, the Washington Post reported that, as mayor of Wasilla, Palin secured more than $27 million in federal earmarks for a town with only 6,700 residents.

In her speech, Palin made a not-so-subtle pitch to snatch the sympathies of small-town voters -- touting her own experience as a mayor, and contrasting her self-professed values with those of Barack Obama. "I might add that in small towns, we don't quite know what to make of a candidate who lavishes praise on working people when they are listening, and then talks about how bitterly they cling to their religion and guns when those people aren't listening," Palin said, referring to remarks Obama made at a San Francisco fundraiser earlier this year.

Sebelius would have none of it. "What I hear from these folks in the heartland, is that people want to know how they're going to afford health care ... whether they're going to keep their jobs [and manage] the cost of gas and groceries," Sebelius said. "Again last night, what we heard were partisan attacks and no real solutions. ... I work with a Republican legislature every day. And I know what people expect us to do ... is to roll up your sleeves and get the job done."

"There's a disconnect between the way she positions herself as a small-town mayor ... and an inside Washington strategy," Sebelius added. "The kind of persona she is putting forward is very enticing, but I don't think it matches with her positions."

Florida Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz hammered a similar theme, saying that Palin "had a real problem with the truth last night" and adding that "even her hometown newspaper said she stretched the truth." (a reference to Thursday's Anchorage Daily News headline: "Some Of Palin's Remarks Stretch The Truth.")

Schultz also suggested that Palin had simply done a good job of robotically delivering an address she had little hand in crafting herself. "Whenever I have had to give significant speeches, I've spent a lot of time with the people assisting me in drafting remarks, adding my own voice," Schultz said. "Last night, I only heard Sarah Palin's voice [through] negative partisan attacks, with no substance or vision of where she thinks the country should go."

On Palin's effort to position herself and McCain as reformers, Schultz asked, "Where is the beef? Where is the evidence? Sarah Palin is not a reformer, she is under investigation in her home state for the abuse of power in trying to get a state trooper fired... If her best example of being a reformer was trying to sell a plane on E-Bay, that is not my definition of reform."

Shultz also questioned Palin's readiness to lead. "To say that her experience as a mayor of a town of 7,000 people ... makes her qualified to have her hands on the pillar of American foreign policy, if God forbid anything happens to John McCain, to suggest that is frightening," she said. "What kind of experience does Sarah Palin have to sit across the table from negotiators of the dangerous countries of this world?"

Obama adviser Robert Gibbs stepped in to rebut a few points of fact from Palin's speech. Specifically, he cited her reference to family members who own a small service station, saying they were precisely the kind of Americans who would receive "three times the tax relief" under Obama's tax plan. Gibbs also noted that Palin "picked up the worn-out playbook of Joe Lieberman," by claiming that Obama cannot point to any substantive legislative accomplishments. Even some of John McCain's surrogates know, Gibbs said, that the ethics and lobbying reforms in 2007, "the toughest since the scandal of Watergate," were passed due to Obama's work across party lines.

GET HER, GOVERNOR!!!!!

Hi, I'm kinda new here; been reading everything, though. My thoughts about Palin? "Butterfly politics". Let me explain. The GOP has been trying to go through a metamorphosis, just like a butterfly. You know, from catapillar to crysalis (sp?) to that beautiful creature fluttering around your head. Well, it's a distraction. The 'change' McCain has been trying to sell us is the idea that he's turned back into the maverick of old, and the butterfly hatched last night in the form of Ms. Palin. Flittering and fluttering about, making us and the media take our eyes off the real prize, a government that works for us, and not against us. See? Butterfly politics.
And that's why I'm voting for O.B./08. I am hearing what I need to hear, not what they think I want to hear. And those two men remind me of my husband, who actually listens to what I say, and responds thoughtfully and takes any topic I want to discuss seriously.

Like that "Butterfly politics" It fits. Palin is the Butterfly. I thought Sebellius was really good and let me say, Debbie Wasserman Schutlz stayed on message last night. She was great. FL how did you get so lucky?? Biden was good too, this am. He wouldn't let them take him off message. Although, it really makes my stomach churn when I hear the Dems praise Palin. YUK !! It's smart, but I don't like it.

Palin's Reformer Image Tainted by History of Ethical Lapses

When John McCain trotted out Sarah Palin as his vice presidential running mate, his campaign and much of the U.S. news media depicted the Alaska governor as an ethics “reformer” whose meteoric political rise came from her confronting corruption within her own state Republican Party.

But a closer look at Palin's short political career reveals that she committed some of the same ethical lapses that she has attacked, especially during her unsuccessful bid for lieutenant governor in 2002. She also has shown herself to be a thin-skinned politician quick to see herself as the target of conspiracies.

But she was selected to appeal to religious zealots. They don't understand the concept of ethics, just dogma. Making this an "ethical" issue is a smokescreen.

In the primaries and *gasp* lots of previous elections, candidates were deceiving voters too.

What's new about Palin jumping in with the rest of them?

True. In the end it seems when enough money or power, or both, is dangled in front of us, most will do whatever's necessary to get it.. Gold metal winners hack for big corporations, talk show hosts shill for their advertisers, and politicians rarely write their own speeches, etc.

We generally cut those we agree with a bit of slack, yet come down full force on those we dislike. `Thing is, we all know it. All humans lie. Ol' Diogenes spent his life searching for an honest man, only to discover even he was dishonest. It's the human condition.

Still, sometimes the lies are just too shameless, such as Dubya and his party for the last 8 years.... And judging by Sarah Palin's parroting of the same lying republican dribble most of us have come to hate, she is nothing more that Dubya in disguise hoping to someday replace McSame. That said, if America buys into this latest Big Lie delivered by Palin, then we are indeed living in the future and it's called the Idiocracy.

Palin doesn't wear pants, she wears short skirts. She couldn't keep up with Hillary's pants brigade. Also, hear some of the campaign buttons are boasting of her good looks.. Leave it up to the Retro Repugs to promote this woman as a sex object. With Cindy on one arm and Palin on the other, McCain could join Hefner at the mansion for cuties and beauties

The Dems need to highlight, much more than they are currently doing, the very real achievements of Obama and Biden in govt. They (and their surrogates) need to put this out in the media, hammer it home in interviews, ad nauseum. The Dems' sense of politeness and modesty does not fare well against Republican self-boasting and lying. The Republicans can lie so effectively about Obama's lack of experience simply because no one is really sure what Obama has done. Dems need to reverse things so that the masses can easily cite Obama-Biden's achievements off the top of their head.

I hope this back and forth squabbling doesn't grossly turn of the undecided voter. Tempting them to just turn off the TV and not vote. This is very tiring. I am neither a dem nor rep, I am a hispanic college educated woman and I am kind of getting disillusioned and a bit cynical about all of this.
my vote is for obama - but man normal americans already have enough drama in their lives. We don't need more drama. We need solutions!!!!!!

When it comes to politics, most actions are reactionary, so when that campaign does that, this campaign must do this, or lose votes. Sadly, there's no way around it.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 07:26 PM on 09/04/2008

True. Talking about reactionary, I think the best thing dems can do is be in the position to defend our democrat candidates after a republican speech. Not TOO much being defensive but just calling out the obvious lies and exaggerations. I think the strategy is to appear pleasant while debunking repub claims. Target the same people who heard the repub speech. Situation controlled, then move to offense.

Panic mode? Obama has this strategy where he waits till things settle and then he makes his move. After the RNC Convention I think someone should schedule an event where high ranking women democrats like Clinton and Sebelius will attend. This will put obama on offense = positive = attracting more women voters, instead of just answering Palin's comments. Women are for Obama kind of rally.

But she left the city $20 million in debt - after raising taxes 38% (up with regressive, down with progressive) and raising spending 33%.

She ruined that town's finances - a town of about 5,000 at the time.

Yeah, the oil companies got the big tax cuts while she hit the residents with higher tax rates...she's a real republican maverick.
I read her approval ratings went from 80-90% down to 67% since she has been Governor for 19-20 months.

The Repuplicans have never been about the small towns. Big business agriculture and thier CAFOs have pushed out the small farmers. They have no moral compass they only see profit margins. How have the Republicans done so far for the small towns over the last 8 years. Our country is falling apart.

THE REPUBLICANS ARE FOR THE RICH, THE ELITE AND THE GLOBALIZATION ESTABLISHMENT BENT ON MORE POWER AND MONEY. THEY HAVE NO SOUL.....

Thier campaign tactics are about reflecting thier own faults onto thier opponent. no integrity

Another example of Palin's deceit?

From 2003 to 2005, Palin was a director of the "Ted Stevens Excellence in Public Service" 527 group:

http://voices.washingtonpost.com/the-trail/2008/09/01/palin_was_a_director_of_embatt.html#_login

Ted Stevens, of course, is the senator from Alaska recently indicted for taking bribes.

In 2004, while a director of the Stevens 527 group, Palin made two political donations for which she listed her occupation as "Homemaker" and "Housewife." This can be found on OpenSecrets.org:

PALIN, SARAH
WASILLA,AK 99654 NA/HOUSEWIFE 6/8/04 $328 Republican Party of Alaska (R)

PALIN, SARAH
WASILLA,AK 99654 HOMEMAKER 7/22/04 $300 Miller, Mike (R)

http://www.opensecrets.org/indivs/search.php?name=palin&state=AK&zip=&employ=&cand=&all=Y&sort=N&capcode=p7s7k&submit=Submit

Was this 527 directorship unpaid? An occupation of housewife/homemaker would suggest a lack of income.
