Sebelius

In a Thursday morning conference call for reporters organized by the Democratic National Committee, Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius pushed back against the idea that Republicans have cornered the market on small-town American values.

"I live in the American heartland, and have been a governor [here] for six years," she said. "I don't know any mayor in any small town in Kansas -- and we have a lot of mayors of small towns -- who hires a lobbyist and goes after earmarks the way Sarah Palin did." On Tuesday, the Washington Post reported that, as mayor of Wasilla, Palin secured more than $27 million in federal earmarks for a town with only 6,700 residents.

In her speech, Palin made a not-so-subtle pitch to snatch the sympathies of small-town voters -- touting her own experience as a mayor, and contrasting her self-professed values with those of Barack Obama. "I might add that in small towns, we don't quite know what to make of a candidate who lavishes praise on working people when they are listening, and then talks about how bitterly they cling to their religion and guns when those people aren't listening," Palin said, referring to remarks Obama made at a San Francisco fundraiser earlier this year.

Sebelius would have none of it. "What I hear from these folks in the heartland, is that people want to know how they're going to afford health care ... whether they're going to keep their jobs [and manage] the cost of gas and groceries," Sebelius said. "Again last night, what we heard were partisan attacks and no real solutions. ... I work with a Republican legislature every day. And I know what people expect us to do ... is to roll up your sleeves and get the job done."

"There's a disconnect between the way she positions herself as a small-town mayor ... and an inside Washington strategy," Sebelius added. "The kind of persona she is putting forward is very enticing, but I don't think it matches with her positions."

Florida Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz hammered a similar theme, saying that Palin "had a real problem with the truth last night" and adding that "even her hometown newspaper said she stretched the truth." (a reference to Thursday's Anchorage Daily News headline: "Some Of Palin's Remarks Stretch The Truth.")

Schultz also suggested that Palin had simply done a good job of robotically delivering an address she had little hand in crafting herself. "Whenever I have had to give significant speeches, I've spent a lot of time with the people assisting me in drafting remarks, adding my own voice," Schultz said. "Last night, I only heard Sarah Palin's voice [through] negative partisan attacks, with no substance or vision of where she thinks the country should go."

On Palin's effort to position herself and McCain as reformers, Schultz asked, "Where is the beef? Where is the evidence? Sarah Palin is not a reformer, she is under investigation in her home state for the abuse of power in trying to get a state trooper fired... If her best example of being a reformer was trying to sell a plane on E-Bay, that is not my definition of reform."

Shultz also questioned Palin's readiness to lead. "To say that her experience as a mayor of a town of 7,000 people ... makes her qualified to have her hands on the pillar of American foreign policy, if God forbid anything happens to John McCain, to suggest that is frightening," she said. "What kind of experience does Sarah Palin have to sit across the table from negotiators of the dangerous countries of this world?"

Obama adviser Robert Gibbs stepped in to rebut a few points of fact from Palin's speech. Specifically, he cited her reference to family members who own a small service station, saying they were precisely the kind of Americans who would receive "three times the tax relief" under Obama's tax plan. Gibbs also noted that Palin "picked up the worn-out playbook of Joe Lieberman," by claiming that Obama cannot point to any substantive legislative accomplishments. Even some of John McCain's surrogates know, Gibbs said, that the ethics and lobbying reforms in 2007, "the toughest since the scandal of Watergate," were passed due to Obama's work across party lines.

Are you a resident of one of the small towns of Kansas? Be interesting to know your town and its mayor and let the rest of us do some google searching. We can read your council meeting minutes. I just read the website for Farmers Branch, TX, and was very impressed.

If I was a resident of a small town in Kansas, I'd be thinking maybe Sebelius needs to be taking some business lessons and reviewing the legislative process. Political ideology and the high road is one thing. Pragmatism and the real needs of a small town are another. Dollars trumps pats on the back any time. Ask any small town mayor.

George W. Bush's entire presidency has been made up of snide comments, sarcasm, belittling and making fun of people.

I see now that Sarah Palin will be stepping in to George's shoes.

Here we go again!

Another "reformer with results" country governor who masks extreme rightwing views and total incompetence with folksiness and platitudes about being "compassionate".

Just another pretty face on the ugly policies of environmental destruction, more subsidies for Big Oil, more wars and hatred abroad, and more partisan warfare and religious extremism at home.

Sebelius may not be a great speaker and may not have foreign policy experience, but she would've made a great VP. But Biden is still a good pick. And Sebelius is way, WAY more qualified than Sarah Palin.

Thank you sooooooooo much Governor Sebelius. I think a group of highly qualified female, strong leaders (such as Sebelius, McCaskill, Sanchez) should hold a press conference and knock that smirk off Palin's mean-spirited, holier-than-thou face. Then again, it's not worth it... The negative attacks and smears did not help Hillary and I doubt they will help Sarah.

Dems are going to have to put the Sarah Palin story to rest, and get on telling their own story. THe Dem convention was probably one of the most positive political events we've had in years. Let's go on with that mission, rather than wallowing in the muck and mire of the lame Republican worldview.

I want to here and now profusely thank Sarah Palin for her speech last night. She was very clear in her thoughts, and effective in her delivery.

But the unintended consequence of taking such a low road in her first national speech is that she has energized Democrats and centerist independents. Cash and volunteer hours are flowing into the Obama Campaign as we speak. Yes, she also energized the fringe of the Republicans. But unfortunately, nearly everyone else is running away.

Good job, Sarah! Thanks!

Where did that comment about Palin giving her daughter a choice about her pregnancy? Is that real fact fact fact? If so, that's super interesting. I've thrown this question around and still interested to know if there's any talk about Bristol receiving prenatal care under her mom's state-provided insurance and if she will even get married before the baby's born. Levi doesn't have a HS degree yet and there's no mention of an employer. How are they going to afford health insurance???? She's very fortunate to have her mom's coverage as a pregnant minor.

Palin can't even manage her own household...how the hell is she gonna help run this country. I'm a 50 year old woman and listening to this so called woman made me angry last night. Palin will set women back a few hundred years if she's elected. I'm sick of people like her playing hollier than thou, while their own children are breaking the very rule that they're preaching about. Check yourself Palin!....and while you're at it check your household too, cause somebody's not doing a good job parenting!

The Republicans have been trying to drill and suck the planet dry for oil since befpore grandpa Prescott Bush. Palin is now pushing drilling in Alaska. She's a shill, she's not worthy to a comment from Hillary. But is'nt funny the Republicans were smart enough to knock Hillary down & bring in another woman to try to draw the people who have followed Clinton for years in, to try to draw her suppoerters away. Any real Hillary supporter will be offended, not encouraged to even think twice about this smoke screen.

Here is a question that someone with facts should answer.

How much oil potentially does Alaska have?

i saw posted on a web sight that the amount is small and would serve little use the the country.

Also the oil companies have a number of drilling leases and did nothing.

The U.S.A shoud place over 100 billion into reasearch for MIT --Wharton --Stanford and other schools to bring solar storage which MIT wrote a paper on and other Research to rid us of oil.

The answer is there just spend the damn money on it and quit listening to the OIL people thay are not true to Americans and can give a chit about humanity.

Among the many negatives this repugnant woman has, I am concerned about her fanatical
religious beliefs. It appears that the Pentecostal church Palin has attended for the past twenty years is anxiously awaiting Armagadon and praying for the "Rapture" since they believe that the end-days are near. A woman who shares this radical, distorted thinking would be a high risk in the Oval office especially with her finger near the proverbial button.

SEBELIUS: "I don't know any mayor in any small town in Kansas -- and we have a lot of mayors of small towns -- who hires a lobbyist and goes after earmarks the way Sarah Palin did."

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On Dec. 19, Rep. Nancy Boyda, a freshman Democrat from Kansas, issued a news release taking credit for a $485,000 grant for a wastewater treatment project in Iola, a town in her district. On Oct. 15, the Van Scoyoc firm had registered to lobby for Iola. On Nov. 1, the firm hosted a fundraiser for Boyda at its offices. The cost for catering, beverages, room rental and incidentals: $1,203, paid for by the firm's PAC.

On the day the House of Representatives passed the lobbying law in July, Boyda said that the ban on gifts and meals was important to her constituents because "they want to know that I'm not sitting someplace in Washington, D.C., with somebody that gets my attention for two solid hours."

Boyda is a Congressperson, not a Mayor. Sibelius talked about what typical small town mayors do.

Boyda is not running for VP as a Washington outsider and reformer.

$485,000 is a far cry from $27 million.

Legislators listen to their constituents and create legislation that honors their requests. Or they wouldn't get elected in the first place.

Any mayor in any small town in Kansas who isn't aware of the earmark process and the legislation process has to be pretty lame. In fact, I'd say they shouldn't be reelected. Do the residents of their towns know they aren't hiring lobbyists and gong after the big bucks?

No, but she listens to the mayors of the small towns of her constituency and crafts, drafts and pushes legislation and follows through on the legislative process for all her constituents as best she knows how. Congressional representatives don't run governments, they support the governments and constituents they represent.

Otherwise, you're saying Boyda is operating in a vacuum, making up stuff as she goes along. We all need a lesson on the legislative process here. Somebody are falsely claiming the high water.

Once again, a general comment to all of you who don't seem to be able to read -

the Lobbyist WAS HIRED BY THE TOWN of Iola.

Typically, that means the MAYOR or CITY MANAGER did the hiring.

Actually that is normally done by the city council or one of the many boards, especially in a town the like Iola.

Palin hired the lobbyist directly apparently. Definite difference. Should I point out that the wastewater treatment plant was very necessary for the town, the old one was poor, failing, and they could not afford to build an up-to-date one with out the grant.

I mean come on, you have to be able to see the difference between a request for money for a legitimate project that will better the life of people and is well within the responsibility of our government to provide, and a multi-million dollar bridge to a small island with a population smaller than my High School.

I completely agree. When Palin was comparing herself to Hillary, I thouth Hillary would say something. She kept quiet. Now that it is clear that Palin stands in opposition to everything Hillary fought for, you would think Hillary would say something. Hillary is the one who claimed that Barack needed more vetting, and by God, she did it. Now that Palin is being vetted and Republicans are crying sexism, I'm surprised Hillary doesn't speak up. Where is she? This is not what I expected.
