Boston Globe:

The rock group Heart has sent a message to John McCain and Sarah "Barracuda'' Palin: quit playing our 1977 hit ''Barracuda.''

Soon after the presidential nominee finished his acceptance speech late Thursday and running-mate Palin joined him on the Republican National Convention stage in St. Paul, the sound system pumped the throbbing introductory guitar licks to "Barracuda.''

It seemed the cleverest musical choice of both conventions. Heart's Ann and Nancy Wilson, like Alaska Governor Palin, are outspoken products of the Pacific Northwest, and the sisters's tune also could refer to Palin's Dazed-and-Confused-Era nickname of Sarah Barracuda, given for her intense high-school basketball play.

But the Wilsons condemned the usage, adding that Universal Music Publishing and Sony BMG have sent a cease-and-desist notice to the McCain-Palin campaign, according to CNN. "We have asked the Republican campaign publicly not to use our music,'' the group said in a statement.

"Heart's Ann and Nancy Wilson, like Alaska Governor Palin, are outspoken products of the Pacific Northwest..."

Here is a little news falsh for David Beard of boston.com. The states of Washington and Oregon comprise the Pacific Northwest and are in the majority liberal. Alaska is on the same coast, but very far up north and very different in political culture.

Ann and Nancy Wilson are the daughters of strong pioneer women and proud U.S. Marine Corps men, but they have nothing in common with Sarah Palin's extreme politics. Regards ladies; DBC.

Dear buzzing neo-cons...

McBooosh is more of the same; no respect for the law, thinks rules don't apply to him and basically doesn't give a d@mn.

Did he even learn his lesson for ripping off Jac kson Br owne? Let some kid download a tune illegally and watch them come crashing down on them.

Your attempts to thrash He art are irrelevant. Admit it, you support law breakers and have no problem with more of the SAME!

Major good point about the wrath of God (and the FBI) raining down on "some kid downloading a tune illegally," while the McCain henchmen's theft is just business as usual.

How many times does this make it that McCain's campaign has been ordered to cease and desist because they are using artist's works without permission? Shows a real respect for individual rights doesn't it? Another pointer to the fact that the POW/Extremist ticket is just Bush/Cheney 2.0.

Hey Maliki33, you argue that "You all never cease to amaze me you talk down to the rich...how they don't pay enough taxes etc. and then at the same time you rally behind the rich Libs of Hollywood and music...who pay the same LOW taxes you all claim of the Republican rich.....want your cake and to eat it too huh?" The difference is that the rich libs you whine about don't whine incessantly and try to find loopholes when it comes to paying their taxes. They don't expect the special treatment as the rich republicans. These rich libs you refer to recognize from where their profit and lifestyle come and are willing to be a part of it instead of look down upon those that put them there as republicans tend to do.

I said the same thing! Like, maybe, just maybe you want to get permission from the artist or the label before using their music? Isn't this SOP? Goodness, how stupid can you get? Or actually, maybe they just don't care. Steal the music, use it for their purposes, take their lumps and steal someone else's music the next time..

Unbelievable..

"How many times does this make it that McCain's campaign has been ordered to cease and desist because they are using artist's works without permission?" They should ask permission out of courtesy to the artist but they have no legal obligation to do so as long as they pay the appropriate fee to whatever royalty collecting organization, ASCAP or BMI, Heart belongs to. The situation is no different than if a bar owner played the song. They would pay a useage fee to ASCAP or BMI and wouldn't be legally bound to ask permission. That said, I think it's scurrilous that McCain didn't check first and get Heart's approval. They should have found some right winger's song instead and HEart has every reason to be pi**ed off that they didn't.

I love Heart. As a Seattle kid, they were the first concert I saw back in 1979.

I'm glad to see they've stood up for themselves. (I'm relieved they don't support McCain/Palin or their right-wing ideology.

No. We want the Hollywood rich to pay more taxes. Pretty simple heh? We also want the Republicans to have respect for intellectual property rights. The law. The constitution. Rallying behind the artists rights says nothing at all about how we might feel about the taxes they pay. I can't see a reason you would make such an assumption?

Obviously a Republican, and they don't have to make sense. They despise Democrats because of their intelligence. They vote with their hearts and not their heads.

If the real thing don't do the trick, you better make up something quick.

Yep, that pretty much sums up John McFlakjacket's campaign.

Relevant only to the extent that they own the song and the Republicans don't care. Just like they don't care about any other law that get in their way. How about you? Do you believe their should be intellectual property rights? For semiconductor designers? For artists? If not maybe you should move to China? I understand they don't care much for intellectual property rights over there.
