Heart Wants McCain/Palin To Stop Using Barracuda

The rock group Heart has sent a message to John McCain and Sarah "Barracuda'' Palin: quit playing our 1977 hit ''Barracuda.''

Soon after the presidential nominee finished his acceptance speech late Thursday and running-mate Palin joined him on the Republican National Convention stage in St. Paul, the sound system pumped the throbbing introductory guitar licks to "Barracuda.''

It seemed the cleverest musical choice of both conventions. Heart's Ann and Nancy Wilson, like Alaska Governor Palin, are outspoken products of the Pacific Northwest, and the sisters's tune also could refer to Palin's Dazed-and-Confused-Era nickname of Sarah Barracuda, given for her intense high-school basketball play.

But the Wilsons condemned the usage, adding that Universal Music Publishing and Sony BMG have sent a cease-and-desist notice to the McCain-Palin campaign, according to CNN. "We have asked the Republican campaign publicly not to use our music,'' the group said in a statement.

Brown, Springsteen, Mellencamp and now Heart have had to tell McCain to stop using their music. Why do they need to steal music from the hated libruls all the time?

They should choose the obvious, conservative Ted Nugent. "Cat Scratch Fever" would have been a good choice or perhaps "Penetrator". "Little Miss Dangerous" would have been perfect.

Gun toting Ted stands like a beacon of light for conservative values as Wikipedia readily indicates. Next time choose The Nuge.

Seems to be a problem all around for McCain this year. During the primaries he was using John Mellencamp's "PInk Houses" and "This is Our Country" without permission, until Mellencamp asked him to stop. Talk about chutzpah--­Mellencamp is a vocal Democrat.

The irony is the true nature of the song. When Heart started out they had a manager that was a sleaze. He would go to djs and to entice them to play their music he told them that the sisters were lesbians. I believe he would also inform them that they would sleep with disc jockeys who played their music. So, a song about women being used to further goals, and used in the basest of ways. This is what the song means, in Ann and Nancy's own words.

Seems like there are a lot of artists that McCain's camp has been getting recall notices from.

The best one though, is Van Halen who, as might be expected, issued two opposite messages. The Van Halens said stop using it. Sammy Hagar said he doesn't care whether Obama or McCain's camp uses it if it inspires people to participate in the political process. The Van Halen saga continues and transcends politics. Doesn't matter who's in office, there'll always be a rift in that band. All we need is for David Lee Roth to come out and back Bob Barr.

Reminds me of the scene in Adam Sandler's movie The Wedding Singer where Sandler tells his ex-fiance, "Please get out of my Van Halen T-shirt before you jinx the band and they break up."

It would appear that the Mac group thinks they can just use anyones music without getting approval first.
