NEW YORK — As a television draw, John McCain was every bit the equal of Barack Obama.

The GOP presidential candidate attracted roughly the same number of viewers to his convention acceptance speech Thursday as Obama did before the Democrats last week, according to Nielsen Media Research.

It marked the end of an astonishing run where more than 40 million people watched political speeches on three nights by Obama, McCain and Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin. The Republican convention was the most-watched convention on television ever, beating a standard set by the Democrats a week earlier.

Three times in two weeks, political speeches were watched by more people than the "American Idol" finale, the Academy Awards and the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics this year.

"It clearly suggests that a great number of Americans think that who will be the next president is important and worthy of their time," said Tom Rosenstiel, a former political reporter and director of the Project for Excellence in journalism.

Television ratings throughout the primary season had already indicated an intense interest in the election, but viewers clearly were more fascinated in the Democratic contest between Obama and Hillary Clinton than the Republican nomination fight.

This week's ratings, with an average of 34.5 million viewers watching the GOP convention over three days, proved people are becoming more interested in what the Republicans have to say. The Democrats had an average audience of 30.2 million over four days, Nielsen said.

"No one really thought they had it in them in terms of pulling off this amazing convention," said Jay Wallace, vice president for news and editorial at Fox News Channel. But Hurricane Gustav pulled people into the news networks over the weekend, he said. People were also intensely curious about McCain's pick of Palin as a running mate, he said.

Nielsen said that 38.9 million people watched McCain accept the GOP nomination Thursday on either ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, Fox News Channel or MSNBC. PBS, which has a more imprecise estimate based on samples in a few big cities, said 3.5 million watched on its network.

Last week, Obama's speech in Denver was seen by 38.4 million on 10 different commercial networks, and an additional 4 million on PBS.

Add it up, and that's McCain, 42.4 million, to Obama, 42.4 million.

No one can really tell who truly had the biggest audience, since C-SPAN also showed the speeches, and Nielsen doesn't measure the cable channel's viewers. But if the presidential vote is this close on Nov. 4, it will be a long night.

McCain may have caught a break Thursday when the opening NFL game between the New York Giants and Washington Redskins finished a couple of minutes before the Republican took the stage, Wallace said.

More men (17.9 million) watched McCain speak than watched Obama (16.2 million), Nielsen said.

"The storylines this year have been so amazing," Wallace said. "It really got started with Hillary and Obama _ that got everyone in middle America watching. They got caught up in the drama of it."

The numbers put to rest the thought that politics has been a turnoff and death for ratings, which has long been gospel at the TV networks, Rosenstiel said.

That has particularly applied to convention coverage, which broadcast networks have backed away from over the years because executives saw them as stage-managed events. ABC, CBS and NBC each added an hour this year to convention coverage, but it didn't halt one trend: Viewers are just as likely to watch the conventions on cable news networks.

Fox was the most-watched network all three nights of the GOP convention, duplicating its feat from the 2004 GOP convention. CNN was the most popular destination for Obama's speech.

Fox had 9.2 million viewers for McCain's speech, followed by NBC _ which aired the football game _ at 8.7 million. ABC, CBS, CNN and MSNBC followed in order, Nielsen said.

Thursday's edition of Fox's "The O'Reilly Factor," featuring the first part of Bill O'Reilly's interview with Barack Obama, was also the second-highest rated edition of his show ever, topped only by a night in March 2003 when the Iraq war was breaking out.

Bush did not even win his election in 2000 - it was delivered to him by his brother Jeb and then the Supreme Court - yet he rules like he got a mandate. More than 50% of the voting public voted for Gore that year.

Watch how the R's are going to say Obama does not have a mandate even if he wins this year.
Let's make it a landslide.

Also- defeat these obstructionists this year in the Senate--

Mitch McConnell - KY
Lindsay Graham - GA
Susan Collins -- ME
John Cornyn - TX

I watched (on the internet) parts of it because I want to know what the enemy is doing.

Watching does not equal approval.

Watching does not equal support.

I think many democrats watched the repubs for the train wreck factor. I know I did. I wanted to see their lies and their attack strategy. Ghouliani did not dissapoint with his assinine idiocity. Saraprompterpalin was just a talking head, a job she was good at once and is still good at. (Go back to sports anchoring in Anchorage, babe!) McCain was the trainwreck I had been hoping for, good God! was that awful or what? "My friends :). I am the candidate for change:). Washington sucks. ;)"
That smile is ridiculous.

Just because a person watches a politician's speech, it does not automatically translate into support for that politician. I recorded and watched all of the major pub speeches and I am sure as hell NOT a pub.
i also watched speeches made by George W. Bush, George Wallace and Adolf Hitler, but I didn't support any of them either. So all you folks on both sides touting high ratings as proof of support, give it a rest.

What silly logic. Since the ratings were neck and neck so will the election? Jack a$$. I watched all three of them (I'm sure millions did too) but I only get one vote (this one's for you Barack!)

Anyway, who cares? It's tv ratings. And I hope O'Reilly is sending Obama a fruit basket of thanks for his great ratings. But that would mean O'R has a bone of graciousness in his body. Not.

Didn't it call it when the story first came out stating that McCain's viewership beat Obama's? They have no credibility! As I said, it is very difficult for them to acknowledge that Obama is beating McCain in everything, so they have to lie about the viewership. Since they control everything, they can make up anything they want, we have no way of verifying it. You can only take solace in understanding that this is a nation that trives on lies and fabrications of the media. How to deal with it is to question everything they say! To counter Reagan's "Trust but verify" quote, I say "[distrust] but verify" to see if it is true!

For one thing, the numbers are funny because they don't have a counter on every American television.

For another, it's meaningless. Watching does not equal approval.

But when the viewership translates into $10m for the Obama campaign vs. $1m for McCain, it's clear that many who watched are Obama supporters who want to be absolutely clear (and prepared to rebut) arguments being made by the other side.

I'm wondering (with no expectation of an answer) how many McCain supporters did the same for Obama's speech.

Too bad for you that right after Palin's speech McCain ALSO received $10 million in donations and money is coming in at a record rate. Whoops! Guess THAT makes your post instantly pointless...

"As a television draw, John McCain was every bit the equal of Barack Obama."

It's tripe such as this that has convinced this country that the race is so close.
And more proof that this Black man has had to run a damn near perfect campaign to compete with incompetents.
Guess what?
America's not buying it!
And neither am I!
The only poll that matters is November 4th. Only then will I finally be convinced that, yes, we are that stupid. (if jm is elected).

I am from South-Africa.

I find it amazing that no-one seems to pick up that your Sen Obama has the same qualities as our Mnr Mandela.

Before he became our president he was also a laywer. The whites were VERY affraid of having a black person as a president (I am white). And he was only taken of America's terrorist list days before his 90th birthday

Obama is a young Nelson Mandela

I watched all of the Pres/VP speeches. Viewers don't equal votes.

Having recently researched McCain's and Obama's proposals, I support Obama's thoughtful, forward-looking policies. Two months ago, I favored McCain, out of ignorance. But three months ago, I received several ridiculous e-mail forwards of prayer-chain rumors about Obama -- he's Muslim, hates America (no flag pin! gasp!), Michelle Obama's thesis was anti-white... I looked into the rumors, and refuted the conclusions to the whole prayer chain. I wrote that it's reprehensible for anyone to "bear false witness", and that it is as evil to spread lies as to utter them. The response: "I don't know what God YOU serve."

As flag pins do not a patriot make, the lack thereof doesn't equate to "anti-American.". An old thesis doesn't represent current state of mind. In any case, I read the thesis. I found it reasonable, even tragic that Mrs. Obama, in that time and environment, felt she might never be considered equal by peers.

Thanks, fellow Christians and Republicans, for showing me how hateful some of us can be while professing to follow Jesus. I'm registered Republican, having never bothered to update records. McCain has abandoned the principles he once represented. Sarah Palin repels me with her vitriol and disingenousness. I will vote for Obama/Biden proudly, because I believe their policies ARE "what Jesus would do."

For the real poll numbers go to:

www.fivethirtyeight.com

you will see how way off the pundits and "polls" are! They don't want people to see that Obama will win by a landslide. Clinton got only 38% of the vote when he won so do the comparison!

Obama / Biden '08-'16 for REAL Change you can belive in, and not Johnny-come-lately change!

538 only as encouragement - to work even harder for O1 - it's not over 'till it's over... with landslide.
