CLAIRTON, Pa. — Five days a week, Linda Graham trolls tattered neighborhoods of this once thriving steel city outside Pittsburgh for unregistered voters she can sign up as Democrats _ one of thousands of unknown volunteers whose work outside the limelight has already altered the basic arithmetic of the November election.

The epic nomination battle between Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton helped put millions more Democrats on the voter rolls while Republican registration declined. Now Graham, 45, has taken three months of unpaid leave from her job at Pittsburgh's Central Blood Bank in the hope of adding to those gains before the presidential vote.

She's encouraged by the response here. "They're all feeling the crunch" of lost jobs and a sagging economy, Graham said. "But people are feeling empowered. They're feeling like, you know what, I hold a little bit of power in this."

To counter this effort, the Republicans are counting on a formidable, high-tech get-out-the-vote operation that has helped them win the past two presidential elections.

Since the last federal election in 2006, volunteers like Graham combined with the enthusiasm generated by the Obama-Clinton struggle to add more than 2 million Democrats to voter rolls in the 28 states that register voters according to party affiliation. The Republicans have lost nearly 344,000 thousand voters in the same states.

The Democrats hope their voter registration efforts can boost Obama to victory in competitive states like Pennsylvania, Nevada and Florida and perhaps even give him a shot at winning traditional Republican states like Georgia, North Carolina and Virginia.

Both Obama and his Republican rival, John McCain, are fighting for independent swing voters, and many of the new Democrats had been unaffiliated voters.

The number of unaffiliated voters dropped by nearly 900,000 since 2006. Many joined the Democratic Party to take part in the primaries and caucuses, and now they will now be targeted by an aggressive get-out-the-vote campaign.

"We feel that our supporters are more enthusiastic than we've seen in previous cycles," said Jon Carson, Obama's national field director.

The Obama campaign is taking the lead among the party organizations and labor unions that traditionally work on voter registration efforts.

Because party organizations and unions, like the Service Employees International Union to which Graham belongs, can raise unrestricted amounts of money, presidential campaigns typically rely on them to handle the bulk of voter registration drives, Democratic National Committee chairman Howard Dean said in an interview.

"This is the first campaign I've seen where the voter registration is done by the campaign," Dean said.

The Republicans are relying on a more traditional voter registration model, with the Republican National Committee leading the effort among state parties.

"We hope that the hard work we've done in the past will provide us with a strategic advantage," said Mike DuHaime, McCain's political director. "We will have the most technologically advanced ground operation ever."

DuHaime said the RNC is working with the state parties to register voters in every battleground state. He said there is extra emphasis on the fast-growing ones, including Nevada, Colorado, New Mexico, Florida and North Carolina.

He said the GOP's comprehensive voter database helps it track voters moving into competitive states.

"If you ever voted in a Republican primary and move without registering, we pick it up," DuHaime said.

Nationwide, there are about 42 million registered Democrats and about 31 million Republicans, according to statistics compiled by The Associated Press.

The Democrats have posted big gains in many competitive states, including Nevada, New Hampshire, Iowa, Colorado and Florida. They have also been targeting historically Republican southern states.

Since 2006, the Democrats have added 167,000 voters in North Carolina, while the Republicans have added 36,000. The Democrats' biggest voter registration goal is in Georgia, where the Obama campaign hopes to register 500,000 voters before the election, said Dean, who has spent the past month traveling the country on a voter registration bus tour.

"The Obama folks are serious about Georgia," Dean said. Georgia has added 337,000 voters since 2006, but the state does not identify them by party affiliation.

In Pennsylvania, the Democrats have added 375,000 voters since 2006 while the Republicans have lost 117,000.

America Votes, an umbrella organization, coordinates voter registration efforts for more than 40 groups in Pennsylvania, including unions, the NAACP and the Sierra Club.

On a recent weekday, two dozen volunteers canvas neighborhoods in five southwest Pennsylvania counties, targeting African-Americans in their teens and twenties, who tend to vote at lower rates than older voters.

Graham, the SEIU member, works the neighborhoods of Clairton, where the steel industry's decline has left more downtown storefronts boarded up than occupied.

Graham finds a potential voter at the first house she stops at. Justin Webb, a father of two, is unregistered, but tells Graham he has serious concerns about the economy.

"We need more jobs," said Webb, 28. "If we had more jobs, we would have more opportunities to better ourselves."

It takes Graham less than five minutes to register Webb as a Democrat.

Bush and Cheney will walk free if you have another Con admin.

You'll also have ANOTHER 3 SUPREME COURT JUSTICES ON THE CON SIDE.

Is that what you want? You have no other choice.

In 2006, when Sarah Palin ran for Governor of Alaska, the Democrats (unlike the Republicans of 2008) vetted her. The documentation is extensive, and was published online.

Recently, the link from various websites including Politico to the documents went dead. Then it came back. Then it went dead. Then it came back. You get the idea.

Rush talks about this regularly, & as usual he's spot-on.

1. This is the same mantra for every national election that I have ever followed; Democrats registering en masse.

2. However, such begs the question. If the top of the Dem tickets are always the Second Coming, why do so many Dem organizers have to scour neighborhoods begging & pleading with people to register?

People in America have become so disillusioned with American politics and they are probably desensitized. Look at what they have endured for the past 8 years - can you blame them? They only need a little encouragement and persuasion to energize them back into action!

You are obviously afraid of the potential outcome.................and you should be!

The Dem + Rep are the problem.

Bush and Cheney have broken countless laws and the Dem don't have the spine to impeach them.

Bush and Cheney belong in prison - NOT collecting a government pension with security detail.

SO who is worse - those that are the criminals OR those who not only let them criminals go free but ALSO give them our Money?

Very much on point, the Dems can't flip the rock over because it would reveal many of them. It would be nice to flush the group but that group will not allow it. What a shame.

I guess stay encouraged and hope they attrit themselves.

Keep your hat on and wait and see. There are people right now that are investigating the crimes and have been heard saying that anyone who has committed a crime against the Constitution will be prosecuted.

WORD OF CAUTION...... Just got an advertisement in the mail to vote for an individual and he stresses all the Democratic issues as his issues but does not identify himself as to what party he is affliated with. I went to the internet and checked him out and lo and behold it's a Republican. They will continue to lie and deceive so be very careful people, these Repubs will do anything to steal the vote again.

I sincerely hope you all have been volunteering for this campaign in your spare time.

Go to www.barackobama.com , register if you have to, and go to "action". Fill in your zip code and it will show you all the events in your area in the near future.

Most are voter registration drives and might take an hour, 2, or 4 hours of your time. Whatever you can give.

The more people vote, the better chance Obama will win. Statistically, its a guarantee.

But impeach the criminals Bush and Cheney and I'd change my mind.

I have been hearing lately that voter intimidation could happen in this election. I think that if people are concerned about this, then before you go to the polls, make sure you have the number to the federal marshall office or the local police office to report anything. If that does not work, get the numbers to local newspapers and radio stations, so that those who want to intimidate people are stopped in their tracks.

Republicans are counting on a few things. Newly registered voters are too dumb to vote. Young voters are to self-involved and lazy to vote. The minorities have never been active and there is no difference from this election that any other. Need I remind people, that women and minorities were denied to vote in our countries history and it would be a shame not to take that right which so many people who came before you died and fighted for. I have seen a lot of blogs by many people and what concerns me, is that people say they are going to vote, but the question remains are you really?

I say this will be the first election in our time where it is "cool" to vote.
I know the more people that are registered to vote, the more people will vote, the greater the guarantee Democrats win.
I know that Republicans win when no one goes to vote, because only the old and conservative vote then.

So what are you waiting for?

Sadly that is usually the case, newly registered voters don't vote and about half of those registered presently are too lazy to vote. It really is up to the local ward leader and committee people to make sure these people get out and vote. You can go door to door and register all day long but if they don't actually vote it is meaningless.

The palpable bias against Senator Obama explains the closeness of the polls. Any flimsy lie that is spun to those who castigate Sen Obama works! Amazing! The critical and key solution is to get the traditionally apathetic voters and the invisible majority registered and out to the polls on Election Day. You see there is an invisible majority out there who have been so disenchanted before now, that there was no hope of achieving what we read about in the article above. If each Democrat who votes Democratic gets 5 people registered and 5 people out to the polls we will overcome, and Obama-Biden will prevail.

Well all these Dems might be registered but how much do you wanna bet that Inner City Detroit will have 2 polling stations and Suburban Macomb and Oakland Counties will have a polling station on every other block. And the same will be repeated in Miami and Cleveland and Cincy and all these other places with significant African American populations in swing states. Oh yea in ATL too, the Repubs cant afford to put GA into play.

Polling stations are by division not by population. So yes some polling stations regardless of the race of the citizens have longer lines than others. The amount of people who actually got off their butts to come out and vote also play a part in how many voting machines you get. So if people only come out to vote on certain elections then you will have very few machines which means long lines. If people have a problem with that then I suggest they get off their lazy butts and vote in every election so that they have a high percentage of turnout and hence get more machines.

Is Obama an elitist because he went to Harvard Law School to educate himself and become a professor of Constitutional Law, or is McCain an elitist because he owns seven homes and has never had a normal job in his life. He went from the miltary to Congress. McCain knows what it is like to work in a factory, or lose his job, or see his job get shipped across seas? The answer is no. In fact when a person owns seven homes and does not even know how many he owns, shows me he is out of touch with main stream America. Movie stars and musicians have more than 3 homes. How many Americans are struggling to pay for one house when this man has seven. McCain is the elitist, not Obama. I see you have been brainwashed into believing that the next four years will not look like the last eight. When a person voted for Bush 89% of the time on major issues, then I do not trust that he will be any different than the last eight.
