Barack Obama

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — Barack Obama made his first direct criticism of Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin on Saturday, saying she pretends to oppose spending earmarks when she actually has embraced them.

Speaking to 800 people at the Wabash Valley Fairgrounds in Terre Haute, Ind., the Democratic presidential nominee ridiculed John McCain and his running mate, the Alaska governor, for describing themselves as agents of change at this week's GOP convention.

"Don't be fooled," Obama told the crowd surrounding him in a large barn. "John McCain's party, with the help of John McCain, has been in charge" for nearly eight years.

"I know the governor of Alaska has been saying she's change, and that's great," Obama said. "She's a skillful politician. But, you know, when you've been taking all these earmarks when it's convenient, and then suddenly you're the champion anti-earmark person, that's not change. Come on! I mean, words mean something, you can't just make stuff up."

McCain has vowed to wipe out earmarks, which are targeted funding for specific projects that lawmakers put into spending bills. As governor, Palin originally supported earmarks for a controversial Alaska project dubbed the "bridge to nowhere." But she dropped her support after the state's likely share of the cost rose. She hung onto $27 million to build the approach road to the bridge.

Until Saturday, Obama had refrained from criticizing Palin directly, saying only that she, like McCain, would continue the Bush administration's policies.

Democrats have debated how to deal with Palin. They want to avoid charges of sexism but find ways to highlight what they see as her political weaknesses.

Obama delivered some of his most withering criticisms yet of McCain, although he did so with chuckles and an air of mock disbelief. McCain has acknowledged voting with President Bush 90 percent of the time in Congress, Obama said.

"And suddenly he's the change agent? Ha. He says, 'I'm going to tell those lobbyists that their days of running Washington are over.' Who is he going to tell? Is he going to tell his campaign chairman, who's one of the biggest corporate lobbyists in Washington? Is he going to tell his campaign manager, who was one of the biggest corporate lobbyists in Washington?"

"I mean, come on, they must think you're stupid," Obama said as the crowd laughed and cheered.

The McCain campaign noted that Obama has steered numerous earmarks to his state of Illinois. However, Obama has not been the critic of earmarks that McCain and, more recently Palin, have been.

Obama said Republicans are targeting his character, and he criticized McCain for saying he would reduce the partisan rancor in Washington. Pretending to address McCain, he said, "Did you pay attention to the last two days of your convention? Were you not watching?"

"When you start just focusing exclusively on trying to tear the other person down instead of what you are going to do on behalf of the American people to deal with this economy," Obama said, "then that's not serving Democrats, that's not serving Republicans, that's not serving anybody."

YOU ARE EXACTLY RIGHt - women can see men panting over Sarah. it's sickening to watch all the men say < 'overlook this and that and this and that, because its sarah," when Hillary didn't even get consideration. It's still Men panting over women in spite of their knowledge of them. Well guys, if she becomes your president and then you wonder how you got the knife in your back, blame yourselves for not analyzing her objectively... Think... put her in a pants suit, and put your stuff back where it belongs, think with your BRAIN! She's not the person here, Mccain is and you don't get to sleep with her if you vote for her.

Obama's got to rally up the People's Emotional Outrage over the failed policies of the passed 8 years. He's in street fighter's terriority not the sublime Harvard club. We love his diplomacy but he'll lose if he waits for the debates and doesn't stir up emotional outrage of rural, suburban and urban America. Stop focusing on "he McCain said this / she Palin said that". Policy. Policy. Change. Change. We can't afford 4 more years of Republican rule.

Ummm, I think you'd be very hard-pressed to find anyone who supported Obama over Hillary with a favorable view of Palin.

Our opposition of Hillary had nothing to do with her being a woman. It was because of her policies, her bad judgment, and the problem that she's about as trustworthy as a stereotypical used-car salesman.

When I see Sarah Palin, I see a small-minded, right-wing extremist, jesus freak. I couldn't overlook that even if she was Scarlett Johansen.

ISSUES ISSUES ISSUES ! McCain's response to anything is WAR! McCain is a multi-millionaire - multi-multi millionaire. His response to the economy... ? It's fine. I mean... I know people are struggling somewhere but it's not too bad, they'll be alright. McCain's response to administration and management ? It's fine, it's not too bad, we can work together, things are ok... QUIT focusing on the new girl in town, we know, everyone knows (thanks to the internet election) that Palin's got problems in management, she doesn't play by the rules. but MCCain could be the president and it's unbelievable that people are not focused on the ISSUES our country is in the toilet BECAUSE OF MC CAIN'S Policies, which are the same as Bush. Get focused! Get the republicans out of office.

Obama is quick to throw blame and forgetful to mention his own problems. He talks about McCain's houses, but doesn't mention his 4 million dollar mansion and how Rezko helped him buying his 1.6 million dollar home for way less than market value. He says Palin asked for earmarks but doesn't mention how he has asked for almost a billion dollars in earmarks. He condemns anyone who voted for the war but then he chooses a VP that voted for it, and was under suspicion for plagiarism twice. He voted many times against the 2nd amendment but when it was stayed, he said he voted for it. His life story that was told on TV the other day couldn't tell us one thing that he did for his state or this country. It showed all the things he did for blacks and for himself, but that is all. He is very sneaky and has no experience, in my opinion.

Man...are there any Republicans left who can stop themselves from lying?

"4 million dollar mansion"? Try $1.65 million.

What is really stunning is you lied by exaggerating the costs - most of the times, Republicans lie by understating the cost.

Like the war in Iraq - per http://www.defenselink.mil/transcripts/transcript.aspx?transcriptid=1322

[bq]
Q: Mr. Secretary, on Iraq, how much money do you think the Department of Defense would need to pay for a war with Iraq?

Rumsfeld: Well, the Office of Management and Budget, has come up come up with a number that's something under $50 billion for the cost. How much of that would be the U.S. burden, and how much would be other countries, is an open question.
[eq]

Projected costs of the Iraq war? $3 trillion and up (yes, that is TRILLION - per http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/03/07/AR2008030702846.html).

lolll...I guess what should shock me is that your lie was only about a few million bucks.

First, his 'mansion' is just over $1 million, but the real point is not even that McCain has multiple homes. The issue is exploring how someone could say, earlier this year, that we have mad good economic progress under Bush and that the economy was technically sound - you only say that if you are disconnected from the woes of common people and McCain is.

Dear Obama, yes Sarah Palin is a skilled politician, I think we've noticed. A lot more skilled than you! Can you just stand still and speak with some poise, please? Or just stick with big crowd speeches and give us a chance to chant your name and scream "we want health care, why don't YOU care?" or something. Hello! Wake up call!! My dad says you'll lose for not choosing Hillary, but I still don't believe him.

I agree. And it's embarrassing. By all appearances, it looks as though Barak Obama is in a debate against the VP candidate, not the Republican Party or John McCain. (And what was up with the campaign using a multitude of gas guzzling SUV's as a backdrop)?!

If you want Senator Obama to win don't spend time blaming the media, the Republican Party or Sarah Palin - get in touch with Barak Obama's campaign. NOW!

Change tally so far
FISA court spying (said he would lead filibuster)
offshore drilling
rescind Bush tax cuts
end Iraq war (we assumed he would end it faster then the republican)
he wasn't going to run an old style campaign
decriminalization of marijuana
Cuban embargo
public financing of presidential election
legal immunity for telecom companies caught spying
expand Bush's aid program to religious groups
hand control advocate now agrees with SC decision to allow handguns for protection
no longer agrees that mental distress can allow for a late term abortion
Pledged to renegotiate NAFTA
Corporate tax cuts
Welfare reform
Voted for the 2005 Bush Energy Bill
Jerusalem should be undivided

Moving to the center is fine but the wholesale adoption of virtually every Republican position is ridiculous.

Obama can promise tax cuts and universal health care all he wants. The government just bailed out Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to the tune of hundreds of billions if not trillions of dollars. We are still engaged in a war on terror. Home prices are plummeting. The economy is shuddering and we're on the brink of a major recession. That's why Obama is pulling back on his raise taxes on the rich statements....We are in a very precarious economic situation. At this rate we'll be lucky if we have jobs to go to in the near future.....

Biden is supposed to be the attack dog here. He hasn't done badly, but ironically he's now being drowned out by Palin's sudden celebrity. (Being a celebrity is only bad when it's a Dem; the GOP loves it when it's one of their own.) Palin is actually helping Old Mac, but she's vulnerable, if for no other reason than she's an off the charts right-winger. She has to be exposed as such, to dampen the bizarre enthusiasm she's engendered. I mean, Dems took years to fall in love with Obama (starting with the 2004 keynote speech) to get to the point we thought he was "ready." The GOP took all of 3 days to decide that Palin was the 2nd coming of Reagan. During the next 2 months the Dems have to be VERY aggressive toward McCain and Palin, pulling no punches. This is no longer an election that will be won just because Bush's approval numbers are abysmal, or because the Dems will still get seats in Congress. Better to go down swinging than have re-runs of 2000 and 2004.

Let's face it. If Palin looked like Candy Crowley, Madeline Albright, or Golda Maier, there wouldn't be this adolescent "crush" on her that middle-aged and older men, as well as some naive younger people seem to be affected by.
LISTEN TO HER. She is George W Bush in a skirt.
Remember how many people would have "liked to have a beer" with President Bush??
How's that working out for them??
Same with Palin, although "having a beer" with her isn't exactly what they're thinking.
Women, to use Obama's words, "are not STUPID." At least I hope they are not supporting Palin because she's a woman. Palin stands against every advance for reproductive rights that women have fought for in the last forty years.
Don't be fooled................................................AGAIN.

Obama should be careful not to get caught up in these personal attacks , which looks like the Reps strategy for this election . It is obvious to the whole nation that the Republicans have nothing to offer us and no real solutions for the nations problems, so their strategy is to get Obama distracted with all these attacks through Sarah Palin.

Interesting how when people have nothing to offer, they try to shift focus to the trivial and little things. So rather than waste his time playing the same game , Obama should rise above by letting them know in passing how trivial they sound, and focus on outlining his plans on how to address the real issues facing this nation.

Believe me everyone will catch on and drop them in a short time, since we are a nation of very smart people, inspite of what they believe.

I'm with you. He needs to stay with his message. It's been winning so far. That's the reason Palin was chosen to get him off his game plan. We want him to get back on his issues and the issues important to Americans. Ok, so a week of Palin, a newby on the scene, now let's get back to business. VOTE.

i dunno, personally, I was glad to see him hit them back, they are liars...we've seen it, so call them on it...is that a big deal? get the fact that the republicans will do anything at all to win, lie, cheat, steal, [all rather anti-american mythos] and you start to get a clearer choice about who is fit to lead this country...

Obama needs to have someone monitoring the Blogs to get slogans and talking points.
Should be saying every decision McCain makes a surge has to follow.
He supported the War in Iraq and a surge followed.
He got involved in the conflict in Georgia and a surge of his surrogates followed.
He picked Sarah Palin and a surge of Lawyers followed .
Can we trust this man McCain to run our country?
NOOOOOOOOOOOO
Because we will need a surge of borrowed money from China to alleviate our debts

Great dialogue going here. Just make sure you all vote - for Obama, of course. It should be obvious to everyone by now that McCain is a little wacky (ok, I'm being generous here) and he'll screw everything up. Too incompetent.
