Barack Obama

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — Barack Obama made his first direct criticism of Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin on Saturday, saying she pretends to oppose spending earmarks when she actually has embraced them.

Speaking to 800 people at the Wabash Valley Fairgrounds in Terre Haute, Ind., the Democratic presidential nominee ridiculed John McCain and his running mate, the Alaska governor, for describing themselves as agents of change at this week's GOP convention.

"Don't be fooled," Obama told the crowd surrounding him in a large barn. "John McCain's party, with the help of John McCain, has been in charge" for nearly eight years.

"I know the governor of Alaska has been saying she's change, and that's great," Obama said. "She's a skillful politician. But, you know, when you've been taking all these earmarks when it's convenient, and then suddenly you're the champion anti-earmark person, that's not change. Come on! I mean, words mean something, you can't just make stuff up."

McCain has vowed to wipe out earmarks, which are targeted funding for specific projects that lawmakers put into spending bills. As governor, Palin originally supported earmarks for a controversial Alaska project dubbed the "bridge to nowhere." But she dropped her support after the state's likely share of the cost rose. She hung onto $27 million to build the approach road to the bridge.

Until Saturday, Obama had refrained from criticizing Palin directly, saying only that she, like McCain, would continue the Bush administration's policies.

Democrats have debated how to deal with Palin. They want to avoid charges of sexism but find ways to highlight what they see as her political weaknesses.

Obama delivered some of his most withering criticisms yet of McCain, although he did so with chuckles and an air of mock disbelief. McCain has acknowledged voting with President Bush 90 percent of the time in Congress, Obama said.

"And suddenly he's the change agent? Ha. He says, 'I'm going to tell those lobbyists that their days of running Washington are over.' Who is he going to tell? Is he going to tell his campaign chairman, who's one of the biggest corporate lobbyists in Washington? Is he going to tell his campaign manager, who was one of the biggest corporate lobbyists in Washington?"

"I mean, come on, they must think you're stupid," Obama said as the crowd laughed and cheered.

The McCain campaign noted that Obama has steered numerous earmarks to his state of Illinois. However, Obama has not been the critic of earmarks that McCain and, more recently Palin, have been.

Obama said Republicans are targeting his character, and he criticized McCain for saying he would reduce the partisan rancor in Washington. Pretending to address McCain, he said, "Did you pay attention to the last two days of your convention? Were you not watching?"

"When you start just focusing exclusively on trying to tear the other person down instead of what you are going to do on behalf of the American people to deal with this economy," Obama said, "then that's not serving Democrats, that's not serving Republicans, that's not serving anybody."

I agree with what you just said even though you were being sarcastic. I read the Wall Street Journal everyday and was a Republican until just a few years ago and only a Democrat a few days ago. The reason for the first abandonment is that the Republican party was not the same one that I supported under Reagon...in fact far from it even though they use his name regularly. I could not however stomach being a Democrat although for the past few years have certainly leaned more that way until now...until Palin was chosen. At that point I knew I was a Democrat. The selection was horrifying. I am the president of a company that has 13 employees and 70-100 independent employees. I compared McCain's selection for being a heart beat away from the presidency and his claim that she had the experience to someone saying that I was qualified to run General Moters with their 200K employees and there current need of a complete overhaul. My resume would be laughed at and so should hers. By the way, I am a woman.

You see this with Palin being VP, yet you believe, based on his resume, Obama is qualified for POTUS? Interesting. I find it funny that both sides of the fence have this double standard that smacks of hypocrisy, regarding who's qualified and who's not. It's getting more interesting by the minute. I'm looking forward to the debates.

Ok, new OBAMA campaign slogan ... McCain/Palin is the bridge to nowhere ... they are to bridge to no healthcare, no end to the war, no end to the recession, no more jobs, no relief at the pump, etc etc etc

McCain/Palin = Bridge to Nowhere

Obama/Biden = Bridge to Hope and Change

Obama/Biden '08: The first campaign to implode in less than 10 days. Political Science programs across the country will have curriculum filler for decades:)

Keep this coming Obama...short and sweet bytes that the media can use ...you have to give them the meat...here are a few--

1. They are like chameleons---one day they are "country first" and now they have borrowed our change theme. Guess they see how well our plan works for this country.

2. Is the reason Bush and McCain are never in the room together because McCain is Bush?

3. I am not going to even dignify Palin with a response. When she finishes high school call me---ok that was a cheap shot, but I am sorry she makes me so mad!

The first two are legitimate. Come strong Senator. Let them know that you can play hard ball too...don't worry about "attacking" her..remember she is a pit bull. If she gets soft just remind her of that.

If you want Obama to win you have to do everything in your power to get AS MANY VOTERS as you can to the poll on November 4th! We will win if people take the time out to go vote, one thing the Republicans beat us on (besides dirty politics) is getting their supporters to actually go vote, without that your support means nothing. Democrats have always disappointed in terms of showing up to vote, particularly the younger people. This happened in 2000 and again in 2004. Get everyone you know to go vote, set up car pools if you need to, make phone calls, do whatever it takes. RIGHT NOW go and make sure your friends are registered, if they are not they still have a little time. Make sure they go and register. If you will not be in the state you're registered to vote in get an absentee ballot right now! For most states you can get the application right on the web, it only takes a second to fill out and a ballot will be mailed to you which you just fill out and mail back. But you have to do it now!

What would they hit her with, their lie about covering all pre-existing conditions in America in their health insurance plan?

Another comment from a 35-yr Alaskan resident:

PALIN, AS GOV OF ALASKA, SLASHED FUNDING FOR SPECIAL OLYMPICS IN ALASKA. As friend of and former worker with Special Olympians, this broke my heart and enraged me. It also enrages me, the actual stupidity of people. What a lying hypocrite Palin is! The Dems need to hit back hard, hit her directly, hit back - PLEASE don't be afraid of confronting her and the R machine behind her directly! The guy who ran against her for gov in Alaska held back and he lost - don't be kind. Nail her. She deserves it.

PALIN KEPT THE BRIDGE MONEY. I put it in caps because you folks all need to know this.
The land the bridge would connect to is owned by the most prominent Republicans in Alaska..

Palin is business as usual (with her own unique personal twists, including random firings of those she doesn't agree with i.e. the librarian and a huge number of her gubernatorial staff - well beyond the Public Safety directors - we were talking about this, in Alaska, long before the VP fantasy came along).

I respect the press, but I wish they'd get their facts right. Are they so timid that they're afraid they'll each lose their jobs if they (the press) bother to look at the source documents?

Palin = extremely frightening as VP. McCain = nuts.
From a respectful 35-year Alaskan. I wondered about McCain before. Now I know he's nuts.

Could be that Obama has been caught in a complete lie. I had missed his health care pre-existing condition clause. Doesn't that sound like a financial impossibility or complete lie to you?

" Come on! I mean, words mean something, you can't just make stuff up."
Like when Obama tells the middle class and rural folks that he understands and represents them and then turns around and criticizes them by saying “bitter” small-town Americans “cling to guns or religion”?
You mean words like that, Barry?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 05:58 PM on 09/08/2008

You'll never understand, yngcelt, that it's possible to say both and be perfectly accurate and honest. I know many small-town Americans who cling to guns and religion, thanks in large part to Republican tripe--and yet I still hope we elect a president who helps them economically rather than pandering to their fears.

Obama was amazingly insightful with that remark. People in small towns are bitter (hey, I live in a big city and I'm bitter as well) and do cling to religion and guns to deal with the fear. It's a statement of fact and it's amazing that people got so worked about it. The truth hurts, eh?

Question: Do you all really want change, or do you just want to win doing things they way they are always done?

Get out there. Talk to people. Make the case. Resist the BS.

Vote

We vote, they lose. Real simple. We outnumber them.

Do you want to make a difference, send out the word about TRUTH to your friends and family.

More people read emails than listening to the news or read news paper.

State the facts and sources as a reference. Use reliable source, like www.factcheck.org a non partisan web site.

Here is one example that I did this weekend and send to everyone on my mailing list and asked them to forward if they agreed:

John McCain: I will keep taxes low and cut them where I can. My opponent will raise them.

Fact: According to the non patrician and non profit organization, Tax Policy Center Obama will decrease the tax burden on families with an income of $250,000 or less:
“The Obama plan would reduce taxes for low- and moderate-income families, but raise them significantly for high-bracket taxpayers (see Figure 2). By 2012, middle-income taxpayers would see their after-tax income rise by about 5 percent, or nearly $2,200 annually. Those in the top 1 percent would face a $19,000 average tax increase—a 1.5 percent reduction in after-tax income.”

“McCain would lift after-tax incomes an average of about 3 percent, or $1,400 annually, for middle-income taxpayers by 2012. But, in sharp contrast to Obama, he would cut taxes for those in the top 1% by more than $125,000, raising their after-tax income an average 9.5 percent.”

No applause on clue great! However, for a man from the south side of Chicago...Obama can and needs to give me better than that, Obama remember the "Mamas for Obama" and do it in the tune that will make them proud of you...get with man! The republicans are using gimmicks and we know how easy the republican party is....subjectives are not the way to go here...just a little more fire and Hillary time as come for you to support you man. Do to Palin what is needed and make her remember what is important GOD FIRST! the people and then the country! And Biden in the debate Palin is giving you her luggage so take it! In the words of Al Green "...let's get it on!
