Barack Obama

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — Barack Obama made his first direct criticism of Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin on Saturday, saying she pretends to oppose spending earmarks when she actually has embraced them.

Speaking to 800 people at the Wabash Valley Fairgrounds in Terre Haute, Ind., the Democratic presidential nominee ridiculed John McCain and his running mate, the Alaska governor, for describing themselves as agents of change at this week's GOP convention.

"Don't be fooled," Obama told the crowd surrounding him in a large barn. "John McCain's party, with the help of John McCain, has been in charge" for nearly eight years.

"I know the governor of Alaska has been saying she's change, and that's great," Obama said. "She's a skillful politician. But, you know, when you've been taking all these earmarks when it's convenient, and then suddenly you're the champion anti-earmark person, that's not change. Come on! I mean, words mean something, you can't just make stuff up."

McCain has vowed to wipe out earmarks, which are targeted funding for specific projects that lawmakers put into spending bills. As governor, Palin originally supported earmarks for a controversial Alaska project dubbed the "bridge to nowhere." But she dropped her support after the state's likely share of the cost rose. She hung onto $27 million to build the approach road to the bridge.

Until Saturday, Obama had refrained from criticizing Palin directly, saying only that she, like McCain, would continue the Bush administration's policies.

Democrats have debated how to deal with Palin. They want to avoid charges of sexism but find ways to highlight what they see as her political weaknesses.

Obama delivered some of his most withering criticisms yet of McCain, although he did so with chuckles and an air of mock disbelief. McCain has acknowledged voting with President Bush 90 percent of the time in Congress, Obama said.

"And suddenly he's the change agent? Ha. He says, 'I'm going to tell those lobbyists that their days of running Washington are over.' Who is he going to tell? Is he going to tell his campaign chairman, who's one of the biggest corporate lobbyists in Washington? Is he going to tell his campaign manager, who was one of the biggest corporate lobbyists in Washington?"

"I mean, come on, they must think you're stupid," Obama said as the crowd laughed and cheered.

The McCain campaign noted that Obama has steered numerous earmarks to his state of Illinois. However, Obama has not been the critic of earmarks that McCain and, more recently Palin, have been.

Obama said Republicans are targeting his character, and he criticized McCain for saying he would reduce the partisan rancor in Washington. Pretending to address McCain, he said, "Did you pay attention to the last two days of your convention? Were you not watching?"

"When you start just focusing exclusively on trying to tear the other person down instead of what you are going to do on behalf of the American people to deal with this economy," Obama said, "then that's not serving Democrats, that's not serving Republicans, that's not serving anybody."

Actually that's not the plan. Your healthcare premiums are already on the rise and shortly McCain'/Republicans intend to make it possible for companies to not offer any. You will be on your own. How are you going to like paying $1,000 and up a month for your healthcare. Many companies are already doing that to employees, Good jobs and good companies. They are just waiting for the right administration to continuie to stay in office to go all the way with it. So please do not feel so smug that you have "benefits". So do I but I know they are not promised in the least.

Then you must be getting good health care. It is just by luck. Most people won't know that they don't have good care until they need it, and then their policy won't pay. And they are given the choice: Pay for the finger to be re-attached, or go without the finger.

The reason health care NEEDS to be addressed is that it is breaking our country.

The sexist rhetoric has been primarily out of the Obama supporters and liberal press.

So it is unclear what you are speaking of.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:10 AM on 09/08/2008

You are wrong about your statement. The sexist rhetoric has not been coming only from the Obama supporters, there are republican men/women that have said things about her too. Several of the woman's rights groups that don't support Obama have made statements so stop trying to lay blame on the Obama supports.

Palin hasn't been the fire like the other candidates. If she didn't want her business out there about her child she shouldn't have released a statement, she put her daughter out there no the Obama camp. She left her daughter out there to dry. She put it out there as a distraction to keep from having to talk about the issues because she doesn't know anything. This is a republican tactic that has worked for years but this year NOT GONNA HAPPEN!! We see right through you.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:50 AM on 09/08/2008

Absolutely not. All you had to read was the articles on CNN the day Palin was seleted to see how incredibly sexist the liberals were. All liberal men mind you.

http://myrealitytelevision.com/2008/09/jack-cafferty-and-cnn-totally-chauvinist-male-political-attack-on-sarah-palin/

touches on this, and it was a pathetic response to the failure of the Democrats to select a woman as the VP candidate in the first place.

If you are seeing right through anything, it is the lies perpetrated by the liberals against Palin.

Liberal Press - where?
The press is owned by William Randolph Hearst, Henry Luce, Rupert Murdock, Arthur Sulzberger, Walter Annenberg....all are known conservatives that edit the news to promote their ideology. Plus, look at the board of directors of broadcast news organizations - - - GE, Ford, Coca-Cola, etc. These types of ownerships effect news coverage. The non-liberal press keeps American citizens uninformed. These organizations take great measure to continue the dumbing down of America. They censor stories that harm their products or conservative ideology.

Barack: "They must think you're stupid..."

they do. and are right in their believe. there are enough of them. these people re-elected bush. (that's the worse crime. even if they did not elect him the first time. they sure re-elected him.) the only solution is to register as many new voters and get them to actually vote. bush never got more than 1/4 of the american votes. the solution is to register as many of the 50 per cent who don't vote and get them to swing the election. otherwise the stupid ones will decide this election like they did so often before. because they vote. they always did. and will again. it's like with stupid people in general: they shout. and the "smart ones" stay quit. this has to change. they must shout back.

"I didn't decide to run for President to start a national crusade for the political reforms I believed in or to run a campaign as if it were some grand act of patriotism. I hope those that are Obama/Biden supporters take these polls with a grain of salt. The MSM is in McCain's back pocket and since the whining by the Republicans since the Palin selection the MSM have to show them love; therefore, here comes a new poll with McCain taking a 10 point lead..what a joke. The lovefest that the MSM showed Palin this weekend shows that the Republicans spin cycle is working; it was less than one week before the sexism talk came and now it's only positive coverage of McCain/Palin and all the negative coverage that the news can report regarding Obama/Biden. I hope for my sake that the American public is not fooled by the MSM i.e., Republican PR department!!

WRONG it's not working. The true supporters of Obama don't worry about these polls, they change everyday and they don't reflect the state individual polls so these means nothing. It's done to stir up the public and I am glad because that means more people will come out to vote if they think their candidate is not winning in these so called polls.

So you can take this hollow poll and celebrate and maybe you should record it so you will have it because the numbers will change yet again.

Two polls have them tied today so what does that tell you. The USAtoday/Gallup poll is the most distorted of all. They had Obama behind when he was ahead in every other poll. We will enter Palin fatigue at some point when we see her on the national scene and during the debates.

I'm sorry. I need you to point out exactly when in the last 2 years have the media given "him a pass". He's been on the campaign trail for roughly 2 years and there's been countless opinion pieces and airwaves full of biased news reporting that's done nothing but stoke the flames of racial prejudice in this country. So when did they give him a pass?

Oh, and I won't even bother addressing the comment re: what ye reap ye shall sow. The logic of that statement and how it applies to this situation doesn't exist on our world of common sense and reason, so feel free to peddle that statement around. You'll probably get a lot of mileage out of it, along with some blank stares and ridicule. But I will remind you that Hillary Clinton is too a woman. Obama beat her without succumbing to sexist rhetoric and stereotypes and walked away with the Democratic ticket. So, good luck.

The Obama campaign is fighting 'now' to keep democratic votes: Where were they when they wouldn't let Florida and Michigan votes count in the primaries? You don't tell people their votes don't count and then turn around and ask them to vote for you. Doesn't work. Florida voters are looking elsewhere.

I have talked to many Rep who are voting for Barack this time. Just met with some yesterday morning. This group of Rep wanted to know what they could do to help Barack get elected. Met a Rep couple Thursday night while I was standing outside my grandson's football game registering voters. Now, they're volunteers, as well. So, yes. Florida voters ARE looking elsewhere ---- they're mostly looking to BARACK OBAMA!!!!!!!!!

Senator Obama, don't stop now. This woman's record has indications of despicable tendencies to abuse power in the pursuit of personal vendettas and ugly Fundamentalist goals. Look into the incident where she attempted to have a respected librarian fired for refusing her demand to censor books. Get that librarian (and every reporter who covered the story) to go public. Show Sarah Palin for what she is and what she isn't. She does not have the power to defeat you, but she is dangerous,.. MUCH MORE dangerous than John McCain. If you give her any quarter, you will defeat yourself.

Let's get more young voters registered, and put pressure on our politicians to make sure our votes are counted.

And keep donating to Obama Biden 08! we gave a great push after the Palin speech, but we've still got a hard fight ahead of us.

You've got this right. i am a 64 year old activist. About 20 years ago, I realized that I'd spent too much of my life endeavoring to change the minds of idiots. As soon as I began to frame my arguments for people who could match socks, I learned that a strong majority is made of people in the middle who are not fixated on bigotry or in love with their own ignorance. There is a sensible middle ground of people who can be reached by various shades of reason. We need to motivate those people to think and to vote. The bigots will show up and now that Sarah Palin is on the ticket, they have someone to vote for.

If Senator Obama doesn't strike hard at the ugly record of this manipulative "hockey mom," he doesn't deserve to win. American can not afford to give up another four years to "divinely inspired" incompetence.

"We've got a hard fight ahead of us." Right on. That's the way it should be. Let's rock & roll.

Much of what you say is true. The "strong majority is made of people in the middle" is probably bigger than Democrats or Republicans like to believe. That's moving to the middle after the primaries works. There is a small group that will only vote for Democratic candidates and a small group that will only vote for Republicans, no matter what. I used to believe that these groups were about 35% and 35%, with 30% in the middle. Now I think it's more like 15% and 15%, with 70% in the middle on the parties and the issues.

For any voter who thinks Sarah Palin should be given a pass on criticism and answering pointed questions about her credentials, I say gender should NOT be an issue! If you're in the arena fighting among men, then expect to be treated equally. We do not take a superior court judge's position as enough qualification to be on the supreme court, and likewise we cannot just take any short-term governor who used to be a smalltown mayor as qualified on just those merits. Have we reduced the position of president so low that anyone off the street with any kind of executive background is qualified? Voters have the right to know before marking their ballots!
