Barack Obama

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — Barack Obama made his first direct criticism of Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin on Saturday, saying she pretends to oppose spending earmarks when she actually has embraced them.

Speaking to 800 people at the Wabash Valley Fairgrounds in Terre Haute, Ind., the Democratic presidential nominee ridiculed John McCain and his running mate, the Alaska governor, for describing themselves as agents of change at this week's GOP convention.

"Don't be fooled," Obama told the crowd surrounding him in a large barn. "John McCain's party, with the help of John McCain, has been in charge" for nearly eight years.

"I know the governor of Alaska has been saying she's change, and that's great," Obama said. "She's a skillful politician. But, you know, when you've been taking all these earmarks when it's convenient, and then suddenly you're the champion anti-earmark person, that's not change. Come on! I mean, words mean something, you can't just make stuff up."

McCain has vowed to wipe out earmarks, which are targeted funding for specific projects that lawmakers put into spending bills. As governor, Palin originally supported earmarks for a controversial Alaska project dubbed the "bridge to nowhere." But she dropped her support after the state's likely share of the cost rose. She hung onto $27 million to build the approach road to the bridge.

Until Saturday, Obama had refrained from criticizing Palin directly, saying only that she, like McCain, would continue the Bush administration's policies.

Democrats have debated how to deal with Palin. They want to avoid charges of sexism but find ways to highlight what they see as her political weaknesses.

Obama delivered some of his most withering criticisms yet of McCain, although he did so with chuckles and an air of mock disbelief. McCain has acknowledged voting with President Bush 90 percent of the time in Congress, Obama said.

"And suddenly he's the change agent? Ha. He says, 'I'm going to tell those lobbyists that their days of running Washington are over.' Who is he going to tell? Is he going to tell his campaign chairman, who's one of the biggest corporate lobbyists in Washington? Is he going to tell his campaign manager, who was one of the biggest corporate lobbyists in Washington?"

"I mean, come on, they must think you're stupid," Obama said as the crowd laughed and cheered.

The McCain campaign noted that Obama has steered numerous earmarks to his state of Illinois. However, Obama has not been the critic of earmarks that McCain and, more recently Palin, have been.

Obama said Republicans are targeting his character, and he criticized McCain for saying he would reduce the partisan rancor in Washington. Pretending to address McCain, he said, "Did you pay attention to the last two days of your convention? Were you not watching?"

"When you start just focusing exclusively on trying to tear the other person down instead of what you are going to do on behalf of the American people to deal with this economy," Obama said, "then that's not serving Democrats, that's not serving Republicans, that's not serving anybody."

What Obama needs to do is turn around the idea the Republicans always use on Dems: taxes and Big Government.

Since the Republicans always will use spin rather than advance policy, going into detailed policy issues only hurts Democrats. Spin always wins for the Republicans.

He needs to explain that wasteful and corrupt military expenditures a la Halliburton and reckless wars effectively use up more taxpayers' money than badly needed domestic initiatives could ever impose.

Big Government, government expansion and budget deficits costs us and future generations bigtime - that is what Obama and his spokesmen need to bring home in speeches and ads in a concise hardhitting way. Raise the issue of Republican profligacy in other words. In a direct easily understood and pithy way, and repeat it over and over alongside McCain's own prideful words that he supported Bush 90% of the time. That would do it. Those two issues.

Sorry Obama, they are stupid. The Obama campaign is making the same mistake that Kerry did by saying " this election will be decided on the issues". Wrong! Elections are about perceptions and the Dems just don't seem to get that. Palin was chosen as a symbol. Dems,at he least , should NOT be saying McCain will be more of the same: they should be saying he IS the same. For example, that the high unemployment rate IS the result of the failed policies of McCain. They shouldn't tie him to the incumbent. THEY SHOULD MAKE HIM THE INCUMBENT! People will believe anything if you say it with conviction and repeat it enough. Need I remind anyone of WMDs. It's the same stratgey that Republicans use in campaigns. Hello Dems! How many times do you have to get beat to realize that facts don't matter!

But if they leave their emphasis on facts behind, they become fascists like the other side. This are simple Star Wars principles here.

By the way, Obama has a monster lead in the electoral college the way things are right now. He's doing all right, and once people learn who Palin is and realize that McCain simply is too old to have the energy to bring about the "complete change" he claims is needed in Washington, it'll only get better.

I hope you're right but people said that people won't vote for that dunce Bush (and he won twice, both times on image). Secondly the public may never get to know the real Palin. The McCain camp said that they would only release her if they thought it would be to their advantage, if not, then they won't. They will create the story they want out of her and keep the media at bay through intimidation. As far as those polls, you might want to check those "monster leads" in a few days now that "Miss Heartland" has been rolled out.

I was qouting Obama who said to a crowd " they (republicans) must think you're stupid". My reponse was yeah, Americans as a whole are "stupid" but what I was really saying that people, anywhere, are easily duped into believing things so wasteing time on facts is usless;image is everything when it comes to winnig elections. H.L. Menken said in the 1920's "Never overestimate the intelligence of the Americahn public"

Kerry lost because he was SWIFTBOATED and he failed to respond in time NOT because he took the high road. I wish folks would remember this.

WHAT OBAMA NEEDS TO DO TO WIN THE ELECTION!

Republicans say they support: Smaller Gov't, Fiscal Responsibility, Balanced Budget, State Rights, and Family Values

Republicans say they are against: Nation Building, War without a clear cut strategy & exist strategy

OBAMA NEEDS TO MAKE THE CASE THAT REPUBLICANS NEVER DO WHAT THEY SAY!!! AND REPUBLICANS CANNOT BE TRUSTED WITH ANOTHER FOUR YEARS!!!!

McCain and Palin talk of Reformers but it's just empty rhetoric. Prove your case Mr Obama and Mr Biden. It should be easy to point out their untruths.

Yeah! Just like McCains campaign ran by lobbyists and is part of the same party that took are country to a crash course to no where. The same party that forgot about the middle-class and the poor. McCain voted against MLK Day. McCain voted against giving Katrina victims Medicaid. He voted against an equal pay bill. He voted against a 430 million dollars that would of been used to treat and care for are soldiers. He voted against a 1.6 billion dollar bill that would be used to reconstruct are public schools. He doesn't understand the economy. He is one of the richest senators. He is a POW. He has agreed with Bush 95% of the times. He does not explain on how he is going to raise are declining economy. He doesn't explain what he would do to bring health insurance down or any sort of universal health care for us middle-class that pay about $500.00 a month on are insurance and then when we are treated we still have to pay some of the medical costs and a big percentage on are medics especially if they are non-generics.

To the Obama supporters: welcome to the world that Bill Clinton stated at the beginning was waiting for Obama. My hope is that I will see the street fighter real soon, and not the law professor; otherwise welcome to four more years of diminished rights and more conflict around the world.

Has anyone heard Obama's response to "FlagGate?" Apparently, after the DNC, they threw out thousands of US flags in a dumpster. Folks from the Republican party found them and have made good use of showing their patriotism in a recent political rally.

It's a shame the Dems didn't make good use of "recyling and going Green."

Where's Hillary when you need her?

Stop lying, republicans stole them when they were told to put them away for the November VICTORY.

They are sick and thieves.. Haven't you heard. They lied and stole our treasure for a trumped up OIL WAR.

Two to three generations worth, and they have the nerve to say nothing about it and show up with a pitbull in a skirt.

Give me a break.

That's not gonna work with the youth, when they realize you stole their future out from under them.

I pose a challenge, please find one significant policy where Obama's approach differs from the standard Democratic (pre-Clinton) policy. Obama's policies are nothing new, they are exactly the same as the pre-President Clinton Democrat policies. Many of these policies have been instituted, Obama wants to expand those. As far as Obama's policies go, you can just download the Democrats positions from the 1980's and you'll be hard pressed to see any material difference. BTW:To Clinton's credit, he actually had a few policies which were substantially different, free trade, welfare reform, education reforms to name a few. It's just the same old big government, redistributionist policies, no changes at all.

It's the change that's been trying to happen since 1963... Your side has simply been fighting so hard with every dime it has to keep our culture from evolving. But in the long-run, your side is bound to fail. The whites will cease to be a majority. The populations will engulf you. And the increasingly open youth of this country will make fossils of you.

Actually, Obama has studied every economic policy since the Johnson administration. He has selected some that can work with others, sorta like the campaign.

He has mentioned a economic policy that was in place before the Reagan years where we didn't have a deficit, also the Clinton Administrations and his own. To combine a progressive tight budget that at first won't eliviate the deficit, in the first two years, but then the Green Tech policy and job creation kicks in after the training programs and on the job partnerships with Wind and Solar companies to train our youth in the technological and manufacturing and assembly, right here in this country to put people back to work with good paying jobs.

I like looking at his site. I've been on since March of 2007. It is always enlightening and very well thought out planning in his ideas. He takes the advice of All the experts, combines it with common sense, and produces solutions.

That's Obama!

Obama/Biden America's pride in Democracy.
