TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — Barack Obama made his first direct criticism of Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin on Saturday, saying she pretends to oppose spending earmarks when she actually has embraced them.

Speaking to 800 people at the Wabash Valley Fairgrounds in Terre Haute, Ind., the Democratic presidential nominee ridiculed John McCain and his running mate, the Alaska governor, for describing themselves as agents of change at this week's GOP convention.

"Don't be fooled," Obama told the crowd surrounding him in a large barn. "John McCain's party, with the help of John McCain, has been in charge" for nearly eight years.

"I know the governor of Alaska has been saying she's change, and that's great," Obama said. "She's a skillful politician. But, you know, when you've been taking all these earmarks when it's convenient, and then suddenly you're the champion anti-earmark person, that's not change. Come on! I mean, words mean something, you can't just make stuff up."

McCain has vowed to wipe out earmarks, which are targeted funding for specific projects that lawmakers put into spending bills. As governor, Palin originally supported earmarks for a controversial Alaska project dubbed the "bridge to nowhere." But she dropped her support after the state's likely share of the cost rose. She hung onto $27 million to build the approach road to the bridge.

Until Saturday, Obama had refrained from criticizing Palin directly, saying only that she, like McCain, would continue the Bush administration's policies.

Democrats have debated how to deal with Palin. They want to avoid charges of sexism but find ways to highlight what they see as her political weaknesses.

Obama delivered some of his most withering criticisms yet of McCain, although he did so with chuckles and an air of mock disbelief. McCain has acknowledged voting with President Bush 90 percent of the time in Congress, Obama said.

"And suddenly he's the change agent? Ha. He says, 'I'm going to tell those lobbyists that their days of running Washington are over.' Who is he going to tell? Is he going to tell his campaign chairman, who's one of the biggest corporate lobbyists in Washington? Is he going to tell his campaign manager, who was one of the biggest corporate lobbyists in Washington?"

"I mean, come on, they must think you're stupid," Obama said as the crowd laughed and cheered.

The McCain campaign noted that Obama has steered numerous earmarks to his state of Illinois. However, Obama has not been the critic of earmarks that McCain and, more recently Palin, have been.

Obama said Republicans are targeting his character, and he criticized McCain for saying he would reduce the partisan rancor in Washington. Pretending to address McCain, he said, "Did you pay attention to the last two days of your convention? Were you not watching?"

"When you start just focusing exclusively on trying to tear the other person down instead of what you are going to do on behalf of the American people to deal with this economy," Obama said, "then that's not serving Democrats, that's not serving Republicans, that's not serving anybody."

Talking and themes should not win Presidential campaigns.
Or is that a stupid observation ?
Could you please stop with your leftist intellectual notions insinuating on a constant basis that we are stupid, low informed and doomed because we do not believe in the change that you are offering us.

Sure. Just stop insinuating that we're all latte drinking, intellectual, bleeding-heart elitists, just because we don't believe in continuing down the same old road we've been on for the last eight years.

But you *are* stupid, 'low informed' [sic] and doomed'--but not only because you are too idiotic to believe in positive change, which is, in fact, in reality, what Obama is offering, but because you believe so ardently in the absolute destruction that your own party champions.

I mean c'mon: call a spade a spade.

Please wake up. Please. I mean, I know it's very difficult for you to do so, being Republinazi and all, but just try. Please?

I think Mccain just lost the election, baring any boneup from the Obama campaign this will be considered the point Mccain lost. By making a pick only his base could like Mccain just lost the swing vote, and that was crucial if he was to win.

Don't be so sure, the right-wing conservative base is a very powerful voting bloc. They were the ones that helped Bush (tremendously, I might add) to win in 2004.

If these come out in full force this election (which they probably will because of Palin), a lot is going to depend on whether or not Obama can command an even stronger voter turnout with AA, youth, and women.

Can Sarah Palin Think?

http://voteforamerica.net/editorials/Comments.aspx?ArticleId=45&ArticleName=Can+Sarah+Palin+Think%3f

One's initial response to this question is: of course; but will the country blindly accept the default position of intelligence to a potential President, especially after the current President's intelligence. I am straight up questioning Sarah Palin's competence. In her eight days on the national stage she has demonstrated no capability for logical thought. At her introduction last Friday (8/29) she regurgitated a speech written by somebody else. The following weekend in Pennsylvania she essentially repeated the same speech. Palin's third and most recent public appearance was her acceptance speech at the RNC in St. Paul. Here she gave yet another speech written by somebody else, but this time it was also written for somebody else. The McCain campaign has also been insistent on eliminating any of her interaction with the media. Palin has been the VP candidate for a week and has herself contributed nothing of substance to her national introduction...

Sarah Palin made it clear that she wants the gloves to come off in this campaign, so Obama is right to give her a taste of her own medicine. This is no time to lose our nerve.

As an Independent, I feel it is my duty to referee between the two parties, misled as they are. Part of that is making sure people know the real facts.

Barrack Obama is fond of saying that John McCain voted with President Bush 90% of the time. That's not true. The actual statistics are that John McCain voted with the majority of his party 88% of the time. Barrack Obama voted with the majority of his party 96% of the time.

While neither is crossing party lines at record paces, or at anything approaching what an Independent would call Bi-partisan work, McCain does seem to vote against his party three times more than Obama.

It's sad when politicians lie, and the media refuses to hold them accountable. Then again, when the media looks more and more like the National Enquirer every day, then it's up to us to hold the politicians accountable.

Check the facts; don't just take their words for it. You owe it to yourselves to know the truth

McCain himself said he voted with Bush 90% of the time. And so far in 2008, when McCain has bothered to show up, he's voted with Bush 100% of the time.

The difference is the Barack Obama is right and John McCain is wrong.

This is only a useful analysis if you think that voting against your party is necessarily a good thing.

In this case, I think that the Bush/McCain/Republican agenda is BAD. Therefore, voting for that agenda 88% of the time is, also, I think, BAD.

Since I think that the Democratic agenda is, however flawed, a Much Much Better Alternative, I think that Barack Obama's 96% support is GOOD.

Bi-partisanship effort is only good if the effort is on behalf of something GOOD. It's not an end in itself.

There is nothing bad about Obama voting with his Party 96 percent of the time.
From 88 percent to 90....ok i'll give you that one.
If you like the thruth so much (which is a very good thing) maybe you should start analysing the repubs now. You might not finish before Nov 4.
Good Luck.

John McCain wants to top his father and grandfather. See they were commanding Generals in major wars. The only way John McCain can top them is to be President and start his own war. John ambition for the oval office is just to start a war. He will not just be satified to cleanup Bush wars. He wants his own war with his name on it. Just look at his campaign logo – it has a Admiral Star on it. This Star is what he could not get in the Navy…

John McCain admitted last night in his Acceptance speech that he SOLD OUT AMERICA while a POW. Is this Country First? The media need to tell young voters what he meant when he said he Broke in the POW Camp. The young voters MUST BE TOLD the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth by the Media. Do not let John McCain get away with just a blank statement "I Broke under pressure".

Joe knows how to holler, doesn't he? I think they're a good team. It's refreshing to see the contrast...the more I see of Obama and Biden, the more hollow the Republican talking points become. They're turning into schoolyard bullies, trying to humiliate their opponents into submission with insults and name-calling. I think We the People are smarter than they give us credit for.
