ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Gov. Sarah Palin's church is promoting a conference that promises to convert gays into heterosexuals through the power of prayer.

"You'll be encouraged by the power of God's love and His desire to transform the lives of those impacted by homosexuality," according to the insert in the bulletin of the Wasilla Bible Church, where Palin has prayed for about six years.

Palin's conservative Christian views have energized that part of the GOP electorate, which was lukewarm to John McCain's candidacy before he named her as his vice presidential choice. She is staunchly anti-abortion, opposing exceptions for rape and incest, and opposes gay marriage and spousal rights for gay couples.

Focus on the Family, a national Christian fundamentalist organization, is conducting the "Love Won Out" Conference in Anchorage, about 30 miles from Wasilla.

Palin, campaigning with McCain in the Midwest on Friday, has not publicly expressed a view on the so-called "pray away the gay" movement. Larry Kroon, senior pastor at Palin's church, was not available to discuss the matter Friday, said a church worker who declined to give her name.

Gay activists in Alaska said Palin has not worked actively against their interests, but early in her administration she supported a bill to overrule a court decision to block state benefits for gay partners of public employees. At the time, less than one-half of 1 percent of state employees had applied for the benefits, which were ordered by a 2005 ruling by the Alaska Supreme Court.

Palin reversed her position and vetoed the bill after the state attorney general said it was unconstitutional. But her reluctant support didn't win fans among Alaska's gay population, said Scott Turner, a gay activist in Anchorage.

"Less than 1 percent of state employees would even apply for benefits, so why make a big deal out of such a small number?" he said.

"I think gay Republicans are going to run away" if Palin supports efforts like the prayers to convert gays, said Wayne Besen, founder of the New York-based Truth Wins Out, a gay rights advocacy group. Besen called on Palin to publicly express her views now that she's a vice presidential nominee.

"People are looking at Sarah Palin as someone who might feasibly be in the White House," he said.

It sounds as if the "christian" conservatives, under a McSame-Palin administration, could make all the blacks white and pray all of the gays away, they might finally be able to steal a song "What A Wonderful World This Would Be".

How sad that any group of people could be so backward.

I believe in the power of prayer to a compassionate God.

Let all loving Americans pray that Ms. Palin be allowed to remain with her family in Alaska so that she can complete her full term as governor. God save us from the shallow and shrill policies that divide us and advance the cause of the weathy elite. Amen

What is that they call someone who believes they can convert themselves from gay to straight through prayer and the support of their church, family and friends? Oh yeah, STILL GAY.

Apparently Palin has a lot of hate and intolerance of others in her heart and soul. Her views are narrow and exclusionary. Her beiefs alienate and divide. Her leadership has been vindictive and revengeful.
..............and John McCain says she is the most qualified person in America to be his vice president?

I'd like to know if a teenager can "pray away" an unwanted pregnancy. I'd also like to know if she does pray for a miscarriage and her prayers are answered, who is deemed the abortionist: the teenager or god?

Let me see if I can understand this. God is all-powerful, so He can't make gay people into straight ones (the same people He made gay in the first place) without a bunch of humans praying for this)?

Okay - I got it now.

The church in the article is not Governor Palins' Church ,If it were ,it would be called THE CHURCH OF GOVERNOR PALIN which it isn't.Didn't everyone dislike this sort of thing when the right was doing it to Senator O'bama ?All of my wishful thinking that the left was on higher ground is being shown as folly with articles like this.If you want her to succeed, just keep attacking her on things that aren't political .Have the last two weeks taught us nothing?

When the christofascist were praying for rain to hit during OBAMAS speech, were they not actually praying against the people who support a democrat? Praying for someone to be other than what Goddddd created is praying against someones human nature. It has always been my understanding of prayer is that when you are asking for bad things to happen to others or you are praying for something other than Godddddds compassion, then you are praying to SATAN. These f***ing christofascist are actually SATANIST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just what the doctor ordered! Another campaign about god, guns and gays. This nut case is on the Republican ticket to get the lunatic fringe all worked up about The Culture Wars. As a nation, we have bigger fish to fry.

Don't forget, his home away from home used to be the White House. Maybe through the redemptive power of prayer it will be so once again.

have you seen the Richard Dawkins' interview with the freak? Talk about sheer arrogance. But what fun it was to see his mighty FALL.

Keep the fight up with the religious right - they just won't go away if and when we take back the white house....

EDUCATION - we must take it back!

and somehow they steal this election yet again, I will be thoroughly through with this country. I will have no fight left.

Not really because they know that turning gay people into heterosexuals is a total hoax. They're just trying to maintain the fiction that it's a choice. That's why Haggard is persona non grata in his own church even after his supposed "cure".

Let us pray,
Dear lord
Because gay people are different than us, and we don't like that,
instead of us having to force them to be second class citizens,
could you please make them turn into something they are not,
could you please somehow make them want something that they don't.
Even though the thought of changing sexual orientation seems like requiring the impossible,
even though it is not a choice for them but an inherent preference,
even though people should have the right to be and do whatever they want, ie free,
pretty please can we all just be the same?
Even though arbitrarily changing our own sexual orientation would seem utterly ridiculous to us,
could you make them stop wearing shoes and belts that match?
Could you make them stop decorating houses and designing clothes?
Lord we just don't understand gay people or we are actually afraid of our own curiosity
or we are gay and are too afraid to be ourselves because people
in our church will ridicule us for being different so we have to live a lie.
Give us the strength to change the world into us, or into what we pretend to be,
because we like to believe we are better than everyone else,
and that anyone different than us needs to be pressured into compliance.
Amen
P.S. Lord, I am not really gay but my boyfriend is,
but at least we watch football.

"...could you make them stop wearing shoes and belts that match?
Could you make them stop decorating houses and designing clothes?"

The majority of homosexuals do not conform to bigoted heterosexist stereotypes. Those men and women are ignored because bigoted heterosexist stereotypes render them invisible.

It is precisely stereotype that is most comforting to straight people. They like their Blacks ghetto (just a little), their Asians good at math and their Gays gushing and prancing; with transparency there’s no anxiety, ambivalence or awkwardness. “The Gay” is rendered identifiable, order has been restored to the universe and everyone can relax.

Ever notice how straights who can’t figure you out get real uptight? Ever get that feeling you’re being coerced into saying “I’m Gay” to alleviate the guilt and shame of heterosexuals who can’t handle not knowing? Because, you know, they have to scrutinize you until they find out what you are…and then it’s ok…because they know now.
