ANCHORAGE, Alaska — John McCain's presidential campaign did not speak with the Alaska House speaker and other leading Republicans before McCain tapped Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate.

The low-profile vetting allowed McCain to spring Palin onto the national scene uncolored by media scrutiny. But it has left the campaign open to criticism that McCain did not fully explore her qualifications.

"I haven't heard of anybody being contacted, not that that's bad," said John Harris, speaker of the state House of Representatives. "I just haven't heard of anybody."

The subject is now closed, said McCain campaign spokesman Tucker Bounds.

"Gov. Palin was fully vetted as previously described and we are no longer commenting on the vetting process," Bounds said Friday. "She was selected, is qualified and is ready to serve."

Attorney Arthur B. Culvahouse Jr. led the review and told The Associated Press earlier this week that Palin underwent a "full and complete" examination.

But Harris, state Senate president Lyda Green and GOP chairman Randy Ruedrich said no one called them in advance to talk about the governor.

"I've not heard of one person who was talked to," said Green, who lives in Palin's hometown of Wasilla and has feuded with the governor.

Palin also has had a rocky relationship with Ruedrich, whom she tried to oust as party chairman.

It was the same story at one of Palin's previous elected offices. Mary Bixby, executive assistant to Wasilla Mayor Dianne Keller, said no one contacted the office for information about Palin before her selection. Since the announcement, the only attention had been from reporters.

"Nobody has been here," Bixby said.

Culvahouse said Palin's review, like others, began with two dozen people sifting through information from public sources: speeches, financial records, tax information, litigation, investigations, ethical charges, marriages and divorces.

For Palin, the team studied online archives of the state's largest newspapers, including the Anchorage Daily News.

Palin answered a personal data questionnaire with 70 "very intrusive" questions, Culvahouse said, and was asked to submit years of tax returns. Culvahouse conducted a lengthy interview.

"They obviously felt like they did enough research and were comfortable," Harris said.

Henry Brady, professor of political science and public policy at the University of California, Berkeley, said Friday that campaigns should be more diligent about examining the record and background of lesser-known candidates than well-known ones.

"Any sensible due diligence would include not just looking at the public record, not just looking at the newspaper, but also talking to people," he said.

When Democrat Walter Mondale picked Geraldine Ferraro in 1984, she was not fully vetted, Brady said. Questions about her husband's financial holdings and tax returns became a central issue in that election, won in a landslide by Ronald Reagan.

Since the Palin announcement, snippets of potentially damaging information have dribbled out _ Todd Palin's youthful intoxicated driving conviction, the pregnancy of the Palin's unmarried daughter, Palin's lack of international traveling, reality vs. hype on her effectiveness as a governor.

"The question is whether all these other little shortcomings are going to accumulate into a not-such-a-great picture," Brady said.

The process does, however, reflect on McCain's decision making. McCain wrapped up the GOP nomination in March, giving him plenty of time to investigate potential running mates.

"You've got months to make this decision," Brady said.

He called it astonishing that with so many unknowns about Palin, more was not done. Brady said he suspects McCain did not seriously consider Palin until just before he picked her.

Still, he said, "This is one where there was time to do it right."

In the end, it may not matter, Brady said.

"She's worked out pretty well," he said of Palin. "She gave a heck of a speech."

Palin better realize that she won't even be considered in a million years had it not been Obama (and Hillary) who's running for the president. Had it been another white American running for the position, the rest of America wouldn't even know she existed. Without Hillary setting the stage, Republicans wouldn't even have considered a woman for a candidate to represent them. So she better not get way too over her head with her comments against Obama/Biden.

Did anyone realize that Obama's 13th district has a bigger population than the entire state of Alaska??
In 2005, the 13th district had roughly 750,000 people.
The entire state of Alaska had 670,00 a year later, 2006, according to the census.
So, if governing experience is based on population, the Republicans lose.
If it is based on square footage, Alaska beats over a third of the continental USA. That includes Arizona. Maybe SHE should be running for president.

well according to her, she has more experience then a senator so she must have more experience than McCain. After all she is a governor. Jesus Christ was a community organizer.Pontius Pilate was a Governor. I just love that

"Jesus Christ was a community organizer.Pontius Pilate was a Governor. I just love that."

Yeah, it's a neat sound-bite but Dems need to be very, very careful with it. In fact I'd suggest they drop it.

In the first place JC wasn't a community organiser - he preached a creed of personal salvation and led a campaign aimed more at the next world than this one. Helping the poor etc. was a matter of earning credits in heaven, his 'tolerance' of prostitutes is based solely on the later Church wrongly painting Mary Magdalene as one, he healed the sick brought to him (if you believe in miracles) but did nothing to create a health service for them and told the leper he healed not to tell anyone about it. (Matt 8:4).

Secondly linking Obama with JC even as a joke is really, really not a very wise thing to do.

Thirdly, Pilate was the Governor on behalf of an occupying power. "Paul Bremer of the Iraq Reconstruction Council" was a lot more like Pilate than Palin.

Lastly, in the contest between Jesus and Pilate, who won?

Right before McCain selected Palin, she was vetted for McCain at a meeting of the secretive Council for National Policy, whose members include such leading Dominionists as Rev. James Dobson of Focus on the Family, Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council, and Tim LeHaye, author of the apocalyptic "Left Behind" books which predict the coming rapture in which true Christians will be instantly transported from earth to heaven and while the rest of humanity will be left to face plagues and pestilence on earth. After this vetting, Dobson, who once said he would "never" vote for McCain, issued a statement hailing Palin as an "outstanding" choice. It is reported that McCain caved in to the Council for National Policy in choosing Palin, after they unequivocally rejected his more moderate first choices of pro-choice candidates Tom Ridge and Joe Lieberman.

Ok,
But still I don't understand why the social conservatives are endorsing and glorifying unwed teen pregnancy. They seem absolutely giddy about knocked up teens all of the sudden. I think this sets a bad example to other teens (namely my own). It is difficult to teach your kids right from wrong when Republicans are promoting and modeling this type of behavior. It is bad enough fighting the hollywood stars and sitcom pregnancies with out the Republicans setting this type of example.
Geeezzz!

The answer is simple about knocked up teens. The Republicans will throw their children under the bus to maintain what they think is power. They will have done so in vain because human nature will throw off oppression and insanity in time. That nature is what founded the country, and no economic system, capitalist or communist, is immune from the corruption of its masters. And we are on the cusp of experiencing why the Founders were adamant on the subject of separation of church and state.

Teenage pregnancy - condemn the sin but bless the sinner. Teach abstinence, but for heaven's sake don't teach sex education... that would be immoral.

We are on the verge of becoming a theocracy, if we do not keep church and state separate! This is scary, scary stuff.

This Council for National Policy is a SCARY group. George W had to get their blessing before he could run for president. Remember Rev. Falwell's run in 88? That was CNP before they had the clout that they now have. The only thing that stopped them in 1992 was Ross Perot - he peeled away enough votes to let Clinton slip in. The CNP appears to be a group of powerful (money and/or influence) elites designed to mobilize well-meaning evangelicals to unwittingly support their initiatives, many of which were advanced during the Bush years (invade Iraq - that was planned before he even took office - in order to establish a permanent presence in the Middle East, make it legal to spy on Americans, and other advancements). Go ahead - wiki or google Council for National Policy ... frightening. Bush's presidency has been steeped in CNP members. They now own the evangelicals and the Republican candidates.

Is it true that the reason that Palin attended 5 colleges in 6 years was because she kept taking time off to undergo psychiatric treatment? Does anyone have more details about this?

Don't know about this. But since the Enquirer is also investigating on her now...it shouldn't be long before the truth comes out too. Showbiz Tonight's host commented that...pretty soon, we may be seeing Palin in her swimsuit from when she was in a beauty pageant. Hmm, can't wait to see how that will help her candidacy. Maybe that will earn her more male voters??

Hi 08Barack08,

And your thinking?

More TV sets were tuned to Sarah than the senator from Illinois . . .we are making her very popular.

My wife had two (very liberal) friends tell her they heard Sarah was going to be 140 miles away in a few weeks and they wanted to know if she wanted to join them? (of course she said they did that in whispers) . . . those two are very excited about Sarah . . . and more talk about this vetting process will be like giant sour grapes . . . .just bringing more folks in.

Advice . . . ought to return to the talking points . . . this vetting thing back-fired!

I think you meant "you're" as in you are thinking.

More TV sets were tuned to Sarah the same way people can't help themselves from rubber necking after a traffic accident. Or maybe like the freak show at a circus. You know it isn't worth the price of admission, you know it isn't REAL, but still you feel compelled to go view the freaks. Sarah's just like that.

Lastly, congratulations on your wife having two liberal friends, and I extend my hopes that they can have the stated threesome with Sarah you mentioned.

All this can only be seen as McCain' Swan song, a last ditch attempt before the Republican's nose dive into at least 8 years of wandering through the wilderness, (to term a biblical phase for any right wing evangelicals here), give it a couple of weeks after the conventions when things have settled down somewhat, their base might have been galvanized but the cynicism that is the republican party we've seen this week and John McCain's shocking move to put party before country on the VP matter will undoubtedly be his and the Republican's Party's undoing.

She's a political prostitute who stood on the corners of Wasilla waiting for the next John! He finally came around and she sold the remnants of her soul to him, even at the expense of her children.

Just wait and see. The other Johns are going to come out of the closet - one by one.

We've vetted Senator Obama, the press, the repugs, and even the man in the moon. He's answered questions from ABC, CBS and even FOX.and he garnered 18 million votes from Americans.

On the other hand, Sarah Palin was "selected" to run, not properly vetted, and not on speaking terms with the media or the public (except that speech she keeps repeating over and over), and is being sequestered. No one is asking about her. She doesn't have to prove herself the way Senator Obama did.

Talk about a double standard.

Obama doesn't have to worry about hiding anything. The media=Obama supporters, won't pursue anything that could be damaging. Consider this; Obama's connection to Bill Ayers is one big yawn for the media. "Yeah he bombed the Pentagon and police headquarters, blah blah blah"
Now, let's say McCain had an identical association with an abortion clinic bomber?
The story would knock proof of space aliens off the front page of the NYT.

i love how when the McCain campaign doesn't want to talk about something they just say something like "we are no longer commenting on that" and the media let's them get away with it.

I read earlier today that they said they would not be commenting on Palin's religion. Her religious background seems pretty extreme and she participated in some of the extreme things said in the church - she didn't just sit quietly in the pew.

The repubicans and the media really went after Obama over Rev. Wright but she get's a pass. Why aren't those videos of her - no just the preacher in that endless loop on the cable news shows?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:55 PM on 09/06/2008

Why isn't the press revealing those tapes? It's only fair if Obama was crucified for just sitting in a pew and here she's espousing the war is a call from God.
I was an upset Independent, female baby boomer by Palin's debut. My reaction to her sarcasm was "What's the difference between Dick Cheney and Sarah Palin? == lipstick == we don't need another bully in the White House, and especially not another hypocrite. If they thought a woman of even average intelligence was going to fall for that spin in a skirt, I am overestimating them. What could be more sexist than voting for a woman just because she's a woman especially if her views and beliefs are contrary to yours. How many woman are glad their son is going to Iraq and think the war is a call from God? They'd criticize any Democrat with a pregnant teen daughter but not them. Imagine if Obama's daughter was in same state!!! This is too much and the negative ads are certainly making up my mind for me on who I will vote for now.

I read here on Huff Post that the Obama campaign had to GO TO Alaska because not all of the newspapers' archives were online. The archivists' told them no one else had been there.

So, did the McBush campaign just read last Wednesday's issue?

"If it wasn't for lies, there'd be no Palin or GOP at all"
