ANCHORAGE, Alaska — John McCain's presidential campaign did not speak with the Alaska House speaker and other leading Republicans before McCain tapped Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate.

The low-profile vetting allowed McCain to spring Palin onto the national scene uncolored by media scrutiny. But it has left the campaign open to criticism that McCain did not fully explore her qualifications.

"I haven't heard of anybody being contacted, not that that's bad," said John Harris, speaker of the state House of Representatives. "I just haven't heard of anybody."

The subject is now closed, said McCain campaign spokesman Tucker Bounds.

"Gov. Palin was fully vetted as previously described and we are no longer commenting on the vetting process," Bounds said Friday. "She was selected, is qualified and is ready to serve."

Attorney Arthur B. Culvahouse Jr. led the review and told The Associated Press earlier this week that Palin underwent a "full and complete" examination.

But Harris, state Senate president Lyda Green and GOP chairman Randy Ruedrich said no one called them in advance to talk about the governor.

"I've not heard of one person who was talked to," said Green, who lives in Palin's hometown of Wasilla and has feuded with the governor.

Palin also has had a rocky relationship with Ruedrich, whom she tried to oust as party chairman.

It was the same story at one of Palin's previous elected offices. Mary Bixby, executive assistant to Wasilla Mayor Dianne Keller, said no one contacted the office for information about Palin before her selection. Since the announcement, the only attention had been from reporters.

"Nobody has been here," Bixby said.

Culvahouse said Palin's review, like others, began with two dozen people sifting through information from public sources: speeches, financial records, tax information, litigation, investigations, ethical charges, marriages and divorces.

For Palin, the team studied online archives of the state's largest newspapers, including the Anchorage Daily News.

Palin answered a personal data questionnaire with 70 "very intrusive" questions, Culvahouse said, and was asked to submit years of tax returns. Culvahouse conducted a lengthy interview.

"They obviously felt like they did enough research and were comfortable," Harris said.

Henry Brady, professor of political science and public policy at the University of California, Berkeley, said Friday that campaigns should be more diligent about examining the record and background of lesser-known candidates than well-known ones.

"Any sensible due diligence would include not just looking at the public record, not just looking at the newspaper, but also talking to people," he said.

When Democrat Walter Mondale picked Geraldine Ferraro in 1984, she was not fully vetted, Brady said. Questions about her husband's financial holdings and tax returns became a central issue in that election, won in a landslide by Ronald Reagan.

Since the Palin announcement, snippets of potentially damaging information have dribbled out _ Todd Palin's youthful intoxicated driving conviction, the pregnancy of the Palin's unmarried daughter, Palin's lack of international traveling, reality vs. hype on her effectiveness as a governor.

"The question is whether all these other little shortcomings are going to accumulate into a not-such-a-great picture," Brady said.

The process does, however, reflect on McCain's decision making. McCain wrapped up the GOP nomination in March, giving him plenty of time to investigate potential running mates.

"You've got months to make this decision," Brady said.

He called it astonishing that with so many unknowns about Palin, more was not done. Brady said he suspects McCain did not seriously consider Palin until just before he picked her.

Still, he said, "This is one where there was time to do it right."

In the end, it may not matter, Brady said.

"She's worked out pretty well," he said of Palin. "She gave a heck of a speech."

You folks on the left are hilarious. You talk about what a joke the nomination of Sarah Palin is and how McCain "just lost the election". But you are all bouncing of the walls in a total panic and it couldn't be more obvious.
She'll get plenty of female swing voters. After all, if it is only natural for a black person to vote for Obama based solely on skin color, then why isn't it natural for a woman to vote for McCain just because his VP is a woman?

Dphilip, Most Black people are Democrats, duh. Not all black people are democrats and that is why black republicans for the most part will still vote for Mccain. HOWEVER, There are more Women who are democrats than are Republican so it wouldn't be dumb for them to vote for Palin because Palin is hardcore republican and the obvious reason would only be because she is a woman which is retarded.

See?

Hey, I'm a 56 year old (white) woman who has brains and would never vote for McSame because he has a woman on his ticket. See the reason why I'm voting for Obama is, way back when he said he wanted change and to me this country reallllllllllllllllly needs a change. I would never vote for some (wowman) puppet on a string.

Sarah Palin is a joke and we are not bouncing off the wall we are waiting for the bottom to drop under her. Rick Davis will not let her talk to the media only if its to the campaigns benefit, well we don't know anything about this woman except she can read a telepromter the voters will not stand for her to stand on the sidelines and not be ask the tough questions. It's not a issue who's black and who's white the issue who can lead the country or have you forgotten thats what this election is about. but of course you Republicans don't worry about that just winning.

It continues to come down to this: "She gave a heck of a speech."

Potentially one heartbeat from being President of the United States.

And now she's nowhere to be found to answer any questions from anyone about anything.

As an American I find this insulting and embarrassing.

goes hand in hand with: 'he's a guy Americans would like to have a beer with"

I think for Johnny, it was, 'Ooh, she's a beauty pageant gal, too, ooh, ooh"

Anyone else see him oogling her derierre while he twisted his wedding ring during last Friday's 'debut'? When he quit oogling, his hands drop to his sides. When he starts again, he goes for the ring.

Hey, psychologists, what's that mean?

oh... You so know she wasn't vetted and that JM didn't know all this stuff before hand, this is the biggest mistake in decades, right now she is getting JM good press, but she is in hiding - hmm because they know they messed up, they have spun it as well as they could to this point, the odd thing is that JM's polls were even when he picked her - he was on the way up... to be honest her speach was not that good - the bar was set low for her so she did well - here are the grades I give the four canidates

B.O.:
A- (great speech, can't help but watch, anything less would be surprising - the bar is set high for him, content good, fire works and generals being rolled out is a bit much)

J.B.:
B+ (good job, to many jokes, I learned about him and he seems smart and hard working)

J.M.:
D+ ok we knew he was going to be bad, but really that bad? You know he practiced, but still it didn't seem to help much, very Gore like boringness, stole from ideas (change) from Dems, no policy. I still don't know what JM's vision is for the US?

S.P.:
B the bar was set low, a B is generious, but it seemed very canned and not - creative, and stole lines from the Dems. seemed defensive.

Don't forget she was a journalism/communications major who knows how to work a teleprompter from her time as a sports reporter. That and her experience in beauty pageants would give her an edge in some respects. I've heard Obama writes his big speeches, but I'm not sure about that. His books are his own words and are very well written, so I tend to believe he would write a good speech. His words seem to be his true feelings; if that speech reflects her feelings, she is a nasty woman!

few of the pandering press will say it, for a journalism major, her speech delivery sucked. I was an effing Exercise Physiology major and I could see that.

What I think would be very useful is for reporters to discuss exactly what a 'standard vetting process' is for vice-presidents. Perhaps in a chart. Then list what we know happened and where there are questions. I think it would visually lay things out because, as I've heard of Biden, every family and extended family, close friends, etc where interviewed...and this was of a man IN the national stage for 26 years. The fact that nobody seemed to talk to Palin and as one person in the article pointed out - lesser knowns should be almost 'uber-vetted" speaks volumes.

I hope Sarah Palin doesn't make John MsSame mad or he will be calling her names liked he called his wife back in 1994. I'm sorry, it is too bad a word to repeat. But we all know how he called his wife the C word.

Governor Kain said that the Obama campaign vetting was so thorough that they asked him the middle name of his girlfriend when he was sixteen. Then they talked to her and when she told them that she was never his girlfriend, they went back to the Governor and required an explanation. John McCain's campaign read some newspaper articles and looked up her marriage certificate. Apparently Obama wanted to be sure that the person he chose to be a heartbeat away from the presidency of his country was truly a person of character who was excellently qualified for the job. McCain just assumed that he would live forever and be her "teacher". Guess whether I trust Obama or McCain more with my country. The same guy who drove the car home from the hospital with his newborn daughter and wife at a very slow crawl because he felt such responsibility for them is the same guy who took seriously his responsibility when he was choosing a possibly replacement president. McCain did what he always does. He tried to fly by the seat of his pants. He likes to play it as a hot shot, but he doesn't take his responsibilities seriously enough to carefully provide for the Nation's future in case he isn't around. Google Anne Kilkenny. She's lived in Wasilla her whole life and attended all/most of the city counsil meetings when Palin was mayor there. She wrote a detailed email that is on the web. It's very enlightening.

But if the Republicans are using the guilty by association argument, her husband's affiliation should be investigated. Did he drop out because it would look good if Sarah pursued higher office?

Palin was in a restaurant with a few other people when someone said that Hillary had just dropped out. Supposedly a waitress overheard her say: "So Sambo beat the b*tch, good."

None of this has been verified in any way.

Nobody really knows why they like her other than the fact that she is a good, honest christian hockey mom with 5 kids, nevermind the fact that she spews lies with every sentence and is being investigated...of course, that would require actually reading the news and thinking about things which seems to be beyond the abilities of some of our fellow Americans...I watched some screeching woman on (Time, I think?) shrieking about how "nobody cares!!" about the fact that she can't actually answer any real questions and thats why everyone is called 'sexist' when they try to question her...well, unfortunately, she's right, the people voting for her DON'T know or care. "War is Peace, Freedom is Slavery, Ignorance is Strength"...
