ANCHORAGE, Alaska — John McCain's presidential campaign did not speak with the Alaska House speaker and other leading Republicans before McCain tapped Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate.

The low-profile vetting allowed McCain to spring Palin onto the national scene uncolored by media scrutiny. But it has left the campaign open to criticism that McCain did not fully explore her qualifications.

"I haven't heard of anybody being contacted, not that that's bad," said John Harris, speaker of the state House of Representatives. "I just haven't heard of anybody."

The subject is now closed, said McCain campaign spokesman Tucker Bounds.

"Gov. Palin was fully vetted as previously described and we are no longer commenting on the vetting process," Bounds said Friday. "She was selected, is qualified and is ready to serve."

Attorney Arthur B. Culvahouse Jr. led the review and told The Associated Press earlier this week that Palin underwent a "full and complete" examination.

But Harris, state Senate president Lyda Green and GOP chairman Randy Ruedrich said no one called them in advance to talk about the governor.

"I've not heard of one person who was talked to," said Green, who lives in Palin's hometown of Wasilla and has feuded with the governor.

Palin also has had a rocky relationship with Ruedrich, whom she tried to oust as party chairman.

It was the same story at one of Palin's previous elected offices. Mary Bixby, executive assistant to Wasilla Mayor Dianne Keller, said no one contacted the office for information about Palin before her selection. Since the announcement, the only attention had been from reporters.

"Nobody has been here," Bixby said.

Culvahouse said Palin's review, like others, began with two dozen people sifting through information from public sources: speeches, financial records, tax information, litigation, investigations, ethical charges, marriages and divorces.

For Palin, the team studied online archives of the state's largest newspapers, including the Anchorage Daily News.

Palin answered a personal data questionnaire with 70 "very intrusive" questions, Culvahouse said, and was asked to submit years of tax returns. Culvahouse conducted a lengthy interview.

"They obviously felt like they did enough research and were comfortable," Harris said.

Henry Brady, professor of political science and public policy at the University of California, Berkeley, said Friday that campaigns should be more diligent about examining the record and background of lesser-known candidates than well-known ones.

"Any sensible due diligence would include not just looking at the public record, not just looking at the newspaper, but also talking to people," he said.

When Democrat Walter Mondale picked Geraldine Ferraro in 1984, she was not fully vetted, Brady said. Questions about her husband's financial holdings and tax returns became a central issue in that election, won in a landslide by Ronald Reagan.

Since the Palin announcement, snippets of potentially damaging information have dribbled out _ Todd Palin's youthful intoxicated driving conviction, the pregnancy of the Palin's unmarried daughter, Palin's lack of international traveling, reality vs. hype on her effectiveness as a governor.

"The question is whether all these other little shortcomings are going to accumulate into a not-such-a-great picture," Brady said.

The process does, however, reflect on McCain's decision making. McCain wrapped up the GOP nomination in March, giving him plenty of time to investigate potential running mates.

"You've got months to make this decision," Brady said.

He called it astonishing that with so many unknowns about Palin, more was not done. Brady said he suspects McCain did not seriously consider Palin until just before he picked her.

Still, he said, "This is one where there was time to do it right."

In the end, it may not matter, Brady said.

"She's worked out pretty well," he said of Palin. "She gave a heck of a speech."

It may not matter -- she gave a heck of a speech??????? What an idiotic thing to say.
Is the whole point here to pick the best candidate? Or to dupe the American people into thinking that someone totally incompetent should be elected to the second highest office in the country? Anyone can give a heck of a speech -- especially when you don't even have to write it yourself!
I sure hope you are wrong that people will vote for a candidate based on public speaking abilities. I also hope the McCain campaign is wrong (and I seriously think they are) in thinking he can select the polar opposite of Hillary Clinton and get Clinton's votors based on gender alone.
What we need are smart, competent, honest people willing to work hard to pull this country out of the mess George Bush pushed us into. I hope a "heck of a speech" isn't the criteria on which we will make that decision.

Unbiasview,

Obama does not have John McCain's experience but he's been vetted by the press, other politicians, the American public. This woman will not even answer questions. She read a speech the other night and re-read that SAME speech yesterday..but no one has asked her a question. If you are truly unbiased you have to find that somewhat peculiar and very telling.

How many debates and on air interviews has Obama been involved in? Not to mention his stellar education, teaching a university level Constitutional law class, sponsoring numerous bills in the Illinois legislature and U.S. legislature, and showing judgement and knowledge about domestic and foreign affairs.

remember the repubs mocking Obama on only giving a good speech. No substance they said.

19 months vetted Obama has shown all the good things he brings to office and his favorablity has risen.

Now the repubs offer up Gov Palin with her municiple experience. Her 27 mill earmarks and the 22 mill debt she left in Wasilla (zero debt when she took office) as the fiscal conservative and reformer.

What a load of B/S from a desperate GOP.

She didn't give a good speech, she READ a speech well.. Everything she sais has been pre-written and everything choreographed.

She can't answer questions, won't do interviews, but according to the GOP she's ready on day 1.

Most people, if they can afford it, get some kind of life insurance to provide for their family in case of death. No one plans on it, but the RESPONSIBLE thing is to invest in an adequate policy. You'd think that Mr. Country First would have shown a little more judgement in the insurance policy he got us, the ones who will have to live through another "decider".

Do they allow teleprompters in interviews with the media where the questions haven't been provided in advance? She doesn't know enough about life for non-Alaskan-Americans to make it through a media interview at this point, and Alaska has a very different way of life than the lower 48.

Ms. Palin may have a lot more to be concerned with than the media at this time(well, unless McCain has enough clout left to prevent or make her present situation go away); from what I've read, they are handing out subpoenas, or are about to on her "Troopergate" mess, and she is heading North to Alaska in a few days; depending on who's asking the questions, she might not be so hesitant to talk, or to tell any cute little lies in that setting.(Sold a plane on EBay, Brought home a moose, fried it up in a pan, put lipstick on a pitt bull, etc.!)We'll see..., when that 's all over, she's still got to sue the Inquirer; busy lady!

This story about vetting is long and gone, the best vetting process for her was about 40 million people watching on Wednesday night. If McCain didn't vet her properly, who cares, the people will decide that in November and right now the pick looks like it gave McCain life again.

Unlike Barack Obama (who got a bigger convention bump), a lot of those watching were like myself, curious to see the woman McCain scrapped his previous choice to pick after he saw how well the DNC convention went. The number of viewers isn't going to translate to votes.

I have news for the media, John McBush, Sarah Pit Bull Palin, Karl Rove, et al, I am a voter, an American born citizen and IT MATTERS TO ME. How stupid do you think the electorate is? Wake up, Old Man McBush. You commited "political suicide" when you picked your vice presidential running mate. You threw AMERICA UNDER THE BUS ALONG WITH YOUR JUDGEMENT. The only people of the electorate that she attracts are far right wing fringe lunatics. Shame on you, JOHN BUSH.

I really liked Palin's speech.

I was a goldmine of inaccuracies and distortions. MSM is already dissecting it. Everyday some new revelation is exposed.
Painting Palin as less than credible.
McCain's judgment flawed.

It only gives me a small amount of satisfaction when I think of her mocking and sacastic tone.

From the first day I saw Sarah Palin, I said this woman is NOT ready for prime time. The fact that the GOP feels the need to hide her speaks volumes of their confidence in her. I suspect they are having a hard time getting her and Mc Cain to name the countries bordering Iraq!

More importantly, what were they thinking when supporting Palin to be in highest office?

U can parse Obama's experience as much as u like, but u can't refute that he has been vetted thoroughly for 19 months (almost as long as Palin has been Governor) and his favorability has risen. He has proven himself over and over.

Obama runs a tight ship with a drama free campaign.

Can Gov Palin say the same in her municiple or state executive office?

The GOP tout her as a fiscal conservative and reformer. Tout her executive experience.

Wasilla 22 mill in debt when she left, zero debt when she took office.
Palin hires a DC Lobbyist.
Gets 27mill earmarks for her little town?
Palin as Mayor pushed to have an administrator to run the town.

McCain should spend the rest of the campaign defending his competence by proving he actually vetted Palin as he claims to have. Joe Biden should relentlessly press this issue as the same kind of incompetence that got us into and then bogged down in Iraq.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 05:12 PM on 09/06/2008

You are right but the McCain campaign says it does not and will not do any such thing. Rick Davis the Campaign Manager was a real jerk yesterday--talk about not having the temperment to lead--he said they will not answer to the media. They will put Sarah Palin out to answer question if and when it serves the campaign's purpose. Does this sound like country first? These people lied directly and repeatedly to the press about who the VP pick would be; they lied about vetting her. The decision-making process involved in selecting Palin and how this campaign has handled the issue ever since shows how they will run the government. And, because Palin looks like the resurrection of the conservative movement, they should be allowed to run the US government in this reckless manner? I pray not.

What's with McCain stealing Obama's campaign slogans and positions when he finds they are successful? Obama should just list them side by side to show the public how few new ideas the Republicans have of their own. Just listen to McCain's stump speeches. I wonder if his followers will recognize many of them as Obama's or attribute them to McCain?

Hmm...think they knew this?

"Sarah Palin's church is promoting a conference that promises to convert gays into hetrosexuals throught the power of prayer."
"You'll be encouraged by the power of God's love and His desire to transform the lives of those impacted by homosexuality"
This is all according to the insert in teh bulletin of the Wasilla Bible Church, where Palin has prayed for six years.
I believe further scrutiny should be applied to Palin and her church - you know, just as it was for Obama. After all, if you apply the republicans Obama/Wright rule to Palin and her church, she agree's with EVERYTHING that her pastor says. No wonder she's hiding from the media.

One of the most important issues that is not being covered in the depth that it should be is Sarah Parrot's links to the Alaska Independent Party. She may not have been a formal member per se, but her husband was and she had indeniable strong links to the party.

This is a DOUBLE STANDARD by the media. If this had been Biden or Obama, we would NEVER hear the end of this - 24/7 coverage by Rupert "Joe Goebbels" Murdoch's network, constant whining by Rush, Coulter, Kristol, etc...

WRITE TO THE MEDIA AND ASK THEM FOR THE FULL STORY

I started with Countdown, as I figure he would be most apt to start the ball rolling:

COUNTDOWN@MSNBC.COM

When someone has a history of being in groups that have as their goal getting their state to leave the US, then I think it is more than fair to seriously question their PATRIOTISM - much more so than if someone "bumps" someone's fist or whatever such non-sense that the far right media hypocritically decides is fair game.

It may not matter that she is vetted or qualified because she gave a heck of a speech? So she will do a heck of a job due to those "Brownie" points accorded her--one well-delivered but empty platitude, lie-filled attach speech with zero substance on how she and McBush are going to stop pandering to corporate greed and start listening to the real people that make up America?
When people have to be vetted for other government jobs, especially ones that will need security clearance like Palin's, they send the FBI, etc. out to thoroughly check out the background of not only the candidate but everyone surrounding her in her present and past lives.
This woman got no more than a first interview, it sounds like--she was dug up a long time ago and groomed for this slot by handlers who don't want to know the truth, they are only interested in the marketing angle, the political narrative...

A heck of a speech written for her by bush speech writers. A speech that was snide, cynical and sarcastic while mocking community organizers. A speech that was divisive and lowbrow. A speech full of lies about her acccomplishments. Yes heck of a speech Sarah!

Why are they keeping her out of the normal press availability? Why are they afraid to let her go on the Sunday morning news circuit? Really, this is absolutely frightening and extremely insulting to the American public. We have a right to know her viewpoint and positions on the issues that matter in this election.

she doesn't have a viewpoint or positions on the issues(other than the wacky babble we've heard so far)...she's already said that she didn't really have time to pay attention to the iraq war because she was too busy w/ state politics(i don't have the link where i read that, but it's out there)...but her old pastor says that if we criticize Bush or his war we are going to hell http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/09/02/palins-church-may-have-sh_n_123205.html
...she probably also has the "viewpoint" that the rapture is coming in our lifetime which is not a quality i want in a leader
