ANCHORAGE, Alaska — John McCain's presidential campaign did not speak with the Alaska House speaker and other leading Republicans before McCain tapped Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate.

The low-profile vetting allowed McCain to spring Palin onto the national scene uncolored by media scrutiny. But it has left the campaign open to criticism that McCain did not fully explore her qualifications.

"I haven't heard of anybody being contacted, not that that's bad," said John Harris, speaker of the state House of Representatives. "I just haven't heard of anybody."

The subject is now closed, said McCain campaign spokesman Tucker Bounds.

"Gov. Palin was fully vetted as previously described and we are no longer commenting on the vetting process," Bounds said Friday. "She was selected, is qualified and is ready to serve."

Attorney Arthur B. Culvahouse Jr. led the review and told The Associated Press earlier this week that Palin underwent a "full and complete" examination.

But Harris, state Senate president Lyda Green and GOP chairman Randy Ruedrich said no one called them in advance to talk about the governor.

"I've not heard of one person who was talked to," said Green, who lives in Palin's hometown of Wasilla and has feuded with the governor.

Story continues below

Palin also has had a rocky relationship with Ruedrich, whom she tried to oust as party chairman.

It was the same story at one of Palin's previous elected offices. Mary Bixby, executive assistant to Wasilla Mayor Dianne Keller, said no one contacted the office for information about Palin before her selection. Since the announcement, the only attention had been from reporters.

"Nobody has been here," Bixby said.

Culvahouse said Palin's review, like others, began with two dozen people sifting through information from public sources: speeches, financial records, tax information, litigation, investigations, ethical charges, marriages and divorces.

For Palin, the team studied online archives of the state's largest newspapers, including the Anchorage Daily News.

Palin answered a personal data questionnaire with 70 "very intrusive" questions, Culvahouse said, and was asked to submit years of tax returns. Culvahouse conducted a lengthy interview.

"They obviously felt like they did enough research and were comfortable," Harris said.

Henry Brady, professor of political science and public policy at the University of California, Berkeley, said Friday that campaigns should be more diligent about examining the record and background of lesser-known candidates than well-known ones.

"Any sensible due diligence would include not just looking at the public record, not just looking at the newspaper, but also talking to people," he said.

When Democrat Walter Mondale picked Geraldine Ferraro in 1984, she was not fully vetted, Brady said. Questions about her husband's financial holdings and tax returns became a central issue in that election, won in a landslide by Ronald Reagan.

Since the Palin announcement, snippets of potentially damaging information have dribbled out _ Todd Palin's youthful intoxicated driving conviction, the pregnancy of the Palin's unmarried daughter, Palin's lack of international traveling, reality vs. hype on her effectiveness as a governor.

"The question is whether all these other little shortcomings are going to accumulate into a not-such-a-great picture," Brady said.

The process does, however, reflect on McCain's decision making. McCain wrapped up the GOP nomination in March, giving him plenty of time to investigate potential running mates.

"You've got months to make this decision," Brady said.

He called it astonishing that with so many unknowns about Palin, more was not done. Brady said he suspects McCain did not seriously consider Palin until just before he picked her.

Still, he said, "This is one where there was time to do it right."

In the end, it may not matter, Brady said.

"She's worked out pretty well," he said of Palin. "She gave a heck of a speech."

I think she wasnt vetted because the same Washington good ole boys club she is promising to shake up is who picked her. I think she was picked when they thought he was going to run against Hillary when it would have been hard for the Clintons to talk about her problems and she would have made snide comments about Bill....

I want to hear her views on the ECONOMY AND FOREIGN AFFAIRS BEFORE THEY PROGRAM HER.
I think they vetted her IQ and found that she is able to retain a lot of information in a short period of time. This is crazy.

Oh, you can bet they'll all be offered gigs by Rupert Murdoch the day after their catastrophic loss to Senator 0bama. Can't wait to not watch the "Tucker Out of Bounds Show" (which will be canceled after 6 weeks).

Because of mcc's age and health issues we have to look at the distinct possibility that Spalin could be an early successor, maybe even on day one. Knowing that, is there any way she would have been even nominated to be pres?

Do any of you actually believe she’s qualified based on two terms as mayor of a hamlet or twenty one months as gov of the 47th largest population in the us? Does her education or experience give her any gravitas to be president or will it help her when she has to deal with another international crisis?

What if there’s a nationwide strike say by amtrak employees (nothing against amtrak) that could really affect national security. What’s her stance on health care, veteran’s care, the economy, the drug war, child care, elderly issues, etc. We have to know. Voting for a blank slate is not an option. We need data. In her particular case she probably has a far greater chance of assuming the presidency than anyone in our history and is she really ready? This isn't a game, this could cost us lives not to mention livelihoods and futures.

The handlers are prepping her now, but beyond the superficial, how well will she answer in depth questions about so many areas? I'm sure she will come out sounding knowledgeable to the ill-informed listener. I hope the fact finders do their job after debates, interviews, etc.

It's obvious Palin wasn't vetted. The McCain campaign was scared, and apparently McCain made a last minute decision to play the sexism card.

What I currently find extremely disturbing is the campaign's attack on the media and the campaign's sequestering of Palin. Given the gravity of the Rep. VP slot, she needs to be asked many in-depth questions about her plans for national security, foreign policy, not to mention domestic problems and solutions. I feel just like the McCain campaign must: she would be disasterous were she be asked to expound on issues. Tired republican slogans won't cut it for me.

You can play the patriotism, POW card only so many times. It isn't going to solve our economic problems and it isn't going to impress our enemies.

Give them a little time- programming Cheynian Fembot requires some delicate rewiring. You have to re-connect the "earmarks good" wire to "earmarks bad connector" and so on...

Michelle Obama was raked over the coals for an undergrad thesis that stated that maybe, just maybe, black students in the Ivy League might have a different point of view on the issues than white students. And Michelle isn't running for anything. Does anyone know if there are any papers written by Palin when she was attending one of her six colleges that can be posted and parsed on the net?

She went to the University of Idaho, not Princeton. I doubt she has ever written a scholarly thesis in her life. I want the smart people in the White House, Barack, Joe and Michelle this time.

More relavent than that, Sarah Parrot's husband was the member of a group - AIP - that wanted Alaska to leave the US! And she also had strong links into the group - as you can see on YouTube.

When someone has a history of saying that they don't want to part of America anymore - then I think it's fair to question their patriotism!

The AIP is the explosive story that is getting minimal coverage!

Write to your media: start w/ Countdown: msnbc.com@msnbc.com - asking why the double standard and why are they afraid of this topic?

Not to mention her Non-College educated OIl company husband was a member of the Alaska Independence party....ALASKA FIRST! This stuff not being brought out in the media is an example of how the media was actually in the can for Hillary.

OBAMA, MCCAIN AND CLINTON ARE CONSTANTLY HAMMERED BY THE MEDIA. Who does she think she is? If she can't take the heat, she should get out of the kitchen. The media will not and should not lighten up on her, neither will I. This woman could be possibly be our President in the near future. We should not be picking a President or VP based on "gotchas" our very lives depend on it.

I don't think they are "hiding" anything. They just don't give a damned what most of us think. They will package her tutor her and send her out to spread their message. The amount of investigation of me when I got my top secret clearance a while back was way, way more extensive than her "vetting".

SHE'S AFFRAID..that's the reason she will not let herself be interviewed. When she does get interviewed it will be with FOX news where she can get the questions in advance and study them. This will not do. I think that she should be in a setting where every news media can be represented. I will not accept FOX.

This pick was red meat for the basest of ideals, and now that this pick has been made, the nut case and the fruit cake religious whackos will have the energy to go out and fire up other idiots that need only need stupid reasons for not changing the environment in Washington.

I get the impression that they won't be satisfied until the US is completely divided and probably in a civil war.
