'Thrown Away Flags' Story False, Dem Convention Official Says

Days before September 11, on the same morning that John McCain and Barack Obama released a joint statement pledging to avoid politics in light of the anniversary of the terrorist attacks, McCain's campaign accused Democrats of throwing away 12,000 American flags.

"The campaign says the flags were recovered from Invesco Field after the Democrats concluded their convention there," Fox News reported, "and they are going to be used as part of the warm-up ceremonies before McCain takes the stage" for a rally in Colorado Springs, Col.

But according to a senior official involved in organizing the Democratic convention, the McCain camp is simply lying about the flags.

"All of the flags at Invesco were picked up and put in bags and into storage, along with the unused flags and campaign signs. The flags were going to be donated, and the signs were going to be sent out to be used elsewhere," the official said, speaking anonymously since he was not authorized to talk to the press.

Fox News' Carl Cameron and Bonney Kapp reported that they had "been told" that "a vendor at Invesco Field found the flags, which were going to be thrown out, and turned them over to the McCain campaign."

The Democratic convention official says that's not true.

"It's pretty reprehensible on their part," he said. "Someone made an assumption, took the flags, and essentially lied about what was going to happen to them. I mean, c'mon, we were never ever going to throw out flags."

Emails to three McCain spokespersons inquiring where the flags were found and how the McCain campaign obtained them were not returned.

UPDATE: DNC spokeswoman Karen Finney issues a statement: "American flags were proudly waved by the 75,000 people who joined Barack Obama at the Democratic Convention. John McCain should applaud that, but instead his supporters wrongfully took leftover bundles of our flags from the stadium to play a cheap political stunt calling into question our patriotism. On the same day he agrees to join Barack Obama at Ground Zero on September 11, John McCain attacks the patriotism of Obama supporters who so proudly waved the American flag at our historic event in Denver just days ago."

UPDATE II: Another statement from the Democratic National Convention Committee: "Stories circulating about flags at the Democratic National Convention are false. We distributed more than 125,000 American made flags at the Convention - the flags removed from Invesco field were intended for other events and taken without permission. It's disappointing that someone would take American flags without authorization and then falsely describe how they were being used. We have the utmost respect for the American flag, and it's sad to see them being used for a cheap political stunt."

Please quit saying "taken without authorization" and say what really happened. Flags intended to be donated to charity were stolen STOLEN STOLEN by the GOP for a cheap political stunt.

Its amazing that the issue is flags and not what they stand for. I guess this is going to be another election about who likes the flag best. We deserve no better until we as a country can stand up and say this symbol is important, but it is not as important as the ideal that it represents. I could not care less about those flags.I care that this country is headed in the wrong directions and I bet I am in the majority.I believe it is time for those of us who are the vast majority of Americans who don't believe that either party has everything right, and don't think that "you are either with us or against us" and that there is nothing but black or white to every issue to say no, it's more complicated than that. If nether party wants to wake-up and stop telling us what they think we want to hear and start telling the truth perhaps we should look somewhere else.

where i live a bunch of folks have the "support the troops" magnets on their cars. ask them if they have anyone in their family in the service and they look at you weird. oh, then exactly what support do you give the troops? like donations, taxes without putting on national credit card? all you get is blank looks. americans aren't sacrificing $h!t . but oh they are supporting the troops. how bout a draft....no way....what a bunch of hypocrites.

The story should be "Republicans Steal 12,000 American Flags". That has to be grand larceny doesn't it?

I think they did throw them away. I live in colorado and word is spreading here like wildfire. Makes you wonder when - the official said, speaking anonymously since he was not authorized to talk to the press. - Of course he was not authorized. Even makes this story look like a lie from the Democrats defending it. Sorry Dems, I am not buying it. We got 4 flags when McCain/Palin came to the springs. They were handing them out to everyone from a garbage bag.

Ok trythetruth you McCain/Palin TROLL. You obviously did not read the statement of the DNC committee that they were going to be using those flags for future events but instead your creepy RNC folks decided to steal them and use them in a typical Republican political stunt. Talk about desperate.

Who cares about some flippin flags. We are a throwaway society. We go to WallFart, buy some junk and throw it way the next day. God bless America. I care about healthcare, balancing budgets, dealing with foreign policy issues without using bombs, and the Cubs. Who cares about some plastic flags made in China?

It's amazing how people can get side tracked. We need to focus on the issues. The flags were probably made in China who we owe billions of dollars. The economy and the war are the main issues.McCain said the economy is basically sound.I believe him when he says this,I think he needs a reality check. He said the surge is working. Anyone interested should check this site http://www.worldpress.org/Mideast/3239.cfm#down Has the surge prevented Peace in Iraq? Another site that I feel everyone should check out is dailymail.co.uk/news/article-54227/How-war-hero-John-McCain-betrayed-Vietnamese-peasant After reading this I looked at things from a different perspective.Don't forget to put http://www. in your address bar before the word dailymail I think the debates will be very interesting,I am looking forward to these debates.

Fox "News"/Republican Party propaganda axiom: "Tell a lie often enough and it becomes true." (at least to gullible idiots who never bother verify the truthfulness of a character attack). Sounds like you're one of them (I'm sure you verified your 4 flags came from Invesco Field), and most probably vote accordingly. Good luck if McSame/Palin get elected...you're going to need it, as will the Nation!

Why do the Democrats allow these idiotic stories to get one iota of shelf life? Why don't they just come out and say the Impugning the patriotism of Americans will not be tolerated. The Republicans have coopted being American, being patriotic, loving country, you name it. They bash Democrats, progessives and anyone they can call "elite" with the patriotism club over and over. And no one does anything to counter it. It is accepted in our policitical discourse that Republicans are authentically American and patriotic and Democrats are not. When are we going to stand up and demand a response to this nonense?

You're right on suzannenyc! The Rethuglicans have been in power far far too long to the point that they have changed the political and historical landscape to the point of it being toxic. From Reagan to Bush the Republican brand is moldy, stale and it absolutely stinks.

It's kinda like the homophobe who is actually homosexual. Maybe all these repubs are actually anti-american but use the patriot-card to cover up their hatred of this country.

First statement was that the flags were put into storage.
If so how can they (GOP) steal them
I thought storage means you put something away

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:05 AM on 09/08/2008

So it's impossible to steal something if it's in storage? I doubt that millions of people who shell out $$ in monthly storage fees would agree with you.

Everything Palin says should be considered a lie until proven otherwise. In the last week she has shown herself to be world-class in one area alone - speaking the untruth.

It's a fact: she lies through here teeth and what she doesn't lie about directly she rearranges in whatever way she thinks is necessary to make her point - shallow and wrong though it may be. Her justification for lying is that God is behind her and anything she does is in his interest and by his command.

She is anathema and it's worth every effort to expose and defeat her at every turn.

For example, she's gone form "I sold that plane on eBay for a profit" to "I put it on eBay" (just this morning). Watch McCain lie about it too. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/09/05/sarah-palins-strange-ebay_n_124097.html

The plane was sold in August of 2007 through a broker for a loss.

Fellow Democrats and Obama supporters, let us not get caught up in the heat of these stupid comments by people trying to create issues where there are none. The Republicans know they cannot win this election and will do anything to take us off our course and goal of assuring that Obama becomes the 44th President of the United States of America. So forget their smears and lies, which are not true. We need to go out there and campaign for our candidate. Convert those independents and undecided voters and get them on to Obama"s tickets. We don"t need to waste our time responding to this rubbish - our time should be spent on the campaign trail. A lot of bloggers and people making comments are just pretending to be Democrats or PUMA supporters or even Republicans who are just working to incite and create issues and friction. Obama has shown us how to handle these issues - with calm and dignity. Come On Dems, don"t get caught up in this BS. McCain and Palin are just another bump on the road, which we will flatten.
YES WE CAN!

I live in Colorado and was involved with what happened.

Yes, us Vets and Boy Scouts were picking them up off the floor and got many from sacks gathered up by someone and thrown in the trash bins.

Also, some were got by people who were headed to trash bin. Some realized the mistake and started helping the recovery effort.

The Democrats had total disrespect for the flag at this convention in relation to trashing the flag. Why it happened or how it did. Is for the Democrats to make sure of the disregard happening again if they want to keep talking of being Americans with respect.

We told the Republicans they could use them and if they did not want to take them home. Please return them so we can put them on graves.

I don't have the time to do this justice, which is part of the strategy I believe, but I think this poster seems mighty fishy:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/users/profile/charleydan?action=comments&display=all&sort=newest

His posts demonstrate a very strong ideological based in the republican party line, as well as a large amount of time to research and respond to these blog entries. Seems like a paid pundit operating under the radar to me.

"So if we prosecute Bush, then the majority of congress goes with him for voting with him, and most of them are Democrats. Got news for you. Our government is up to there neck in debt and not caused by the war. Even tho the war did not help. In fact last year the expenditures were 700 billion for military and 800 billion for human services. Wall Street gave to Democrats this year election at a 5 to 1 for Republicans. I predicted over a year ago, my collegues on Wall Street would be doing it. Why? The phrat boys did not listen in economics 101 and will now need bail out." -posted Sep 09, 2008 at 18:17:07

with all this time, I would like to see his allegation supported with something besides an anonymous "I was there.."

KNOCK KNOCK --- ANYBODY HOME ??!!!!

And now back to the real news. Got any real issues to talk about? Health care, housing crisis, economy in general, job losses, you know, things that really matter.
Next time, why don't those 'Dems officials' answer that kind of flag or any other nonsense with a big fat WHATEVER.

The Republicans will use any lie to keep from having to deal with the issues. How patriotic is it to let 4000 Americans die in a war for oil? How patriotic is it for soliders to fight in a war with substandard equipment or come home and not get healthcare needed? How Patriotic is it for working people who pay taxes , have to do without, but we spend money in Iraqi like a dripping faucet(Iraqi has millions of dollars in US banks). Where does common sense come in?The simple things seem to confuse people.

Let's not forget dear leader and his smeared buddy McCain have autographed flags before, too.

http://www.ushistory.org/betsy/flagbush.htm

January 2008, John McCain autographed a flag for a supporter at a January rally in Keene, N.H. In 2003, President Bush autographed a small flag (see next), which created a stir online. Flag Code: "The flag should never have placed upon it, nor on any part of it, nor attached to it any mark, insignia, letter, word, figure, design, picture, or drawing of any nature." Photo credit: Stephen Crowley/The New York Times

In July 2003 President Bush autographed a small flag. This picture was circulated across the Internet noting its violation of the Flag Code: "The flag should never have placed upon it, nor on any part of it, nor attached to it any mark, insignia, letter, word, figure, design, picture, or drawing of any nature."
