NEW YORK — MSNBC is replacing Keith Olbermann and Chris Matthews as co-anchors of political night coverage with David Gregory, and will use the two newsmen as commentators.

The change reflects tensions between the freewheeling, opinionated MSNBC and the impartial newsgatherers at NBC News. Throughout the primaries and summer, MSNBC argued that Olbermann and Matthews could serve as dispassionate anchors on political news nights and that viewers would accept them in that role, but things fell apart during the conventions.

Gregory, the veteran Washington hand, will anchor MSNBC's coverage of the presidential and vice presidential debates and election night, network spokesman Jeremy Gaines said Sunday. The change was first reported by The New York Times.

The tipping point appears to have come during the GOP convention when Olbermann criticized MSNBC for showing a Sept. 11-themed video prepared by the Republicans.

MSNBC executives, who had publicly defended their anchors' roles while privately monitoring them throughout the political season, made the change over the weekend after discussions with Olbermann. Despite the controversy around him, Olbermann has been a hero with left-leaning viewers and keyed MSNBC's growth among coveted young viewers.

During her acceptance speech last week, Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin talked about the "Washington elite" not accepting her qualifications for the job. Some delegates on the convention floor began chanting, "N-B-C, N-B-C."

Olbermann began to have difficulty keeping his opinions in check, or simply stopped trying.

He sarcastically dismissed GOP pundit Pat Buchanan on the air after Buchanan said the Republicans had been enlivened by the entrance of a conservative Republican.

"Those reading US Weekly with the picture of her and her youngest daughter with the word `scandal' written across it won't be so happy," Olbermann said.

He expressed little sympathy at another point when GOP anger at rumors over the Internet about Palin were being discussed.

"We'll see if people feel sorry for unfounded rumors on the Internet," he said. "If that's the case, Senator Obama's probably standing up and cheering and waiting for people to feel sorry for him."

Perhaps most embarrassing, Joe Scarborough was discussing positive developments in John McCain's campaign at one point when Olbermann was heard on an offstage microphone saying: "Jesus, Joe, why don't you get a shovel?"

Scarborough, a former Republican congressman and host of MSNBC's "Morning Joe," got in another nasty on-air exchange with MSNBC reporter David Shuster, and Matthews snapped at Olbermann on-air when it appeared Olbermann was criticizing him for talking too much.

All the drama made MSNBC a punch line when top NBC anchor Brian Williams appeared on Comedy Central's "The Daily Show" last week. "Is there no control?" host Jon Stewart asked him. "`Is it `Lord of the Flies?'"

A sheepish Williams said that every family has a dynamic of its own.

"But does MSNBC have to be the Lohans?" Stewart said.

Olbermann was in Denver during the Democratic national convention, but performed his co-hosting duties for the GOP convention in a New York studio. NBC President Steve Capus said the decision was not political, that Olbermann had been sent back to anchor coverage of Hurricane Gustav.

MSNBC's decision comes just before Olbermann's "Countdown" show is set to air, on Monday, his interview with Barack Obama. That will put Olbermann in direct competition with his nemesis, Fox News Channel's Bill O'Reilly, who interviewed Obama last week and is airing a portion of it Monday in the same 8 p.m. EDT time slot.

Keith and Chris are the only two intresting people on MSNBC. I love them and it is rather cowardly for them to be yanked off the hightest night of this soap opera. I quess I'll have to watch something else that night.

Both Keith and Chris are biased; but they are not at all the same.
Keith used to be funny and fun to watch (about 3 years ago). Since that time his rants have become so vitriolic, and he so emotionally unhinged, that he has turned himself into a liberal media caricature. Keith strikes out with personal attacks and vendettas conjured within some burning pit of hatred that he has apparently swallowed and internalized. I can no longer stand to look at him, and no less to listen to him.
Chris also has a bias to the left and we know his history in the Carter administration. However, Chris is a pro and rarely slants his presentation without first so characterizing it, often apologizing for having done so immediately afterwards. When Chris gets angry he keeps it political, not personal. Even when he eviscerates a guest who is obviously lying, completely incompetent or talking about things they clearly don"t understand (we all saw the Appeasement Evisceration, right?) he does so without malice or personal attacks. My only criticism of Chris is that when he finds that occasional new drum, he keeps beating it for days and weeks and never relents even when the tune has changed.

Chris Matthews and Keith O. are very pleased with the arrangement and I really like Rachel
Maddow Show. I do NOT like Joe S. who is on in the morning 'Morning Joe' 6:00 a.m. - 9:00 a.m.
And I do NOT like Pat Buchan (sp). He is a has been. I liked very much Tucker Carlson, Dan
Abrams, Don Imus (Morning Joe took his place) and of course, I loved Tim Russert. No one
will take his place - ever. There were several others that have gone or left MSNBC recently.

As far as I'm concerned, if it weren't for KO's stepping up to the plate and combatting the blatant hypocrisies of the MSM, Obama would not be where he is today. Good for you, Keith. You're a man of your convictions and one of the few left that has a spine.

Without Keith Olbermann, MSNBC is NOTHING.

Now there is Maddow. Watch for them to use her as a lever against KO. They know he is their saving grace, and wanted to make sure they were not totally indebted to one talent.

Thank goodness Oberman and Matthews were removed from covering political news. When you are covering a convention-either Democrat or Republican, it is not fair to inject your own opposite political views. I watched the Democratic convention with none of this on any channel-I watched different ones to see how they did and then I watched the Republican convention. I was angry that MSNBC had to slant their coverage and I immediately turned them off. Frankly, Fox news is number 1 for a very good reason. It is the only channel we can get fair and balanced news! MSNBC really shot themselves in the foot. The more they push Obama, the more people go for McCain. The people in this country are to smart to let the news media decide who should become president.

They should just leave them on. According to the ratings hardly anybody watches MSNBC anyway.

Keith and Chris are the primary reason I watch MSNBC - if I wanted to watch snarky Republican vacuous talking heads --I can tune in to all the other networks like Fox and CNN -- Funny how the right wingers think it's perfectly okay for them to spew non-stop 24 hours a day on every network but it's so "unprofessional" when the opposite viewpoint is expressed. PULLEASSSE... Spare me the indignation.

I posted this comment earlier but it was scrubbed; however, it remained in my profile. Here goes:

(That comment should have read he would not be as far as he is today IMO.)

Can this be? As a dyed in the wool "elitist" I have long held such demonic notions that the apparent idiocy of the American electorate was the simple product of corporate domination of the media through effective and well funded "commercials" that repeatedly were able to succeed in selling the vast majority of Americans to support the interests of their natural adversaries (and by the way, that TV was generally an idiot box). I certainly can't claim credit for any special insight on this front (see, The Medium is the Message, et seq.).
And now like any Budweiser swilling Bubba I find myself stunned, depressed and hopeless -- all because my favorite TV is gone!
I had hoped that the ratings (and thus profits) generated by Chris and Keith would keep them safe (in an example of the sometimes self-destructive contradictions of capitalism. Guess GE wised up.

I am pleased that Msnbc has taken action against Oberman and Matthews. I was appalled and disgusted with their behavior, and changed channels immediately. I expect this kind of behavior from O"Reilly but not MSNBC. Personally I don't think they should be on air, but I applaud you on taking approiate action. My friends and I will continue watching MSNBC.

I was watching Bill Moyer yesterday (9-13-08) about the shock jocks on Radio, they showed Michael Savage, Rush Limbaugh and Bill O'Reilly saying things such as: "if you vote for Obama you don"t deserve to live"! They actually continue along that line of talk, making it more detailed in how excruciating liberals should die! Turning American's against other American's is the most un-patriotic thing I can think of!
Watching Chris Mathews and Keith Olbermann is a breath of fresh air. We liberal's have a right to our opinions and have commentators just like Fox new has. But I consider Fox new much worse because fo all their lies. But we never go so far as wishing the far right to die!
Someone should put the breaks on these radical right wing pundits, with their love to hate liberals. We are not the enemy the terrorists are.
I hope Chris Mathews and Keith Olbermann fight this ban against them, they are only two of a very few liberal thinkers. Democrates for quite a few years have been said they didn't have any back bone. And most of us remember the constant attacks against Bill Clinton while he was in office. There seems to be a hugh push, even a threat that unless your an Evangelical, hate freethinkers, and literally repeat almost word for word what the right wing radicals are telling people to think and you should die.

If one more guests starts an answer to a question with the word "absolutely" I am going to scream. Every guest on Countdown starts each reply with this word becasue they already agree with Keith on every issue. Absolutely they do. It's boring TV-don't fall into this oh-so-predicatable format, Rachel. You have the smarts to counter any neocon that comes your way. Can't say the same for Mr Olbermann. Keith is a light weight in the political arena and I'm afraid idiots like Oreily or god-forbid Ann Coulter would chew him up and spit him out. And Limbaugh? He's a swallower. Rush has chunks of guys like Olbermann in his stool.

We have to stop linking Olbermann to Obama support-he's giving reason for independents to step away from our man. Fair minded folks hear Keith and link BO voters with him and other foam-at-the-mouth crazies. If we lose this tight election I'll put a lot of blame on Mr Olbermann's hysterical rants. Many of us are already uncomfortable, if not out right embarrassed, by some of our more "visible" supporters-KO is definitely one of the reasons. We want intellectual change-not emotional.

I like these guys individuly, but putting them TOGETHER is embarassingly painful to watch. The sparring and sniping and pouting is just too distracting and unprofessional. I actually applaud the decision.

Chris Matthews was the one that should have been dropped. Keith does a great job!

I totally agree with you. I thought Chirs Mathews should have been dropped years ago. I wish MSNBC would pic up Aaron Brown . He has beengone from CNN for a long time, but I still miss him.

Dear foreplay,
MSNBC cannot be taken off the air primarily because they are not on the air. MSNBC is only available on cable. The FCC, sparky, was created to oversee broadcast radio and TV stations. As MSNBC is cable-only, the FCC has no power over the content or distribution of MSNBC. And finally, FOX News is the most biased news provider on cable. Go back to watch Bill-O the Clown and leave Olberman alone.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 02:48 AM on 09/11/2008

They should be taken off the air completely. They are probably the most politically biased people on cable TV. The FCC should lift MSNBC's broadcast license.

Both - but especially Olbermann - are so partisan that they can only be tolerated by viewers who totally agree with them. This turns off half or more of potential viewers. Matthews is still salvageable, but Olbermann is the cable news left-wing equivalent of Rush Limbaugh and is beyond any redemption.

MSNBC was justified in their actions. I was appalled and disgusted with their actions, and changed the channel imediately. Personally, I would like to see them off the air.

Yes and they can lift Foxs right with them And maybe Rush should be yanked and them maybe CBS and then maybe we can have one opinion and and then NONE
