Nearly 600,000 Subject To Possible Voter Caging In Ohio

How many voter-registration mass mailers are "returned to sender" in the run-up to Election Day may determine how many Ohio residents are eligible to vote.

Ohio election officials are sending out a mass mailer stamped "do not forward" to all registered voters today (Sept. 5) with an absentee ballot application and other important notices for Nov. 4.

What's important here is not so much what's going out as what's being returned to sender.

Every state in this country should have same-day voter registration, period. I lived in Minnesota, a state that does have same-day voter registration - people can register to vote on Election Day. It is quick and easy and causes very few (if any) problems. States should be making it as easy as possible for citizens to vote – not as hard or as frustrating as possible – this is, after all, supposed to be a democracy.

My mother was an election judge for decades in Minnesota and the only people who ever complained about same-day voter registration were republicans – mainly because of the amount of time it took. It takes about 5 minutes to register a new voter.

Obama's campaign has a list of those voters and will be contacting them to make sure they are eligible to vote.

Everyone hears about how Obama is registering new voters. What you don't hear about are things like this. Obama took the lessons from 2004 to heart and all the things the Republicans did then to steal the election. Obama has been effectively countering them for several months now. By making sure people's addresses are correct and making sure they have the proper identification etc. The Obama campaign got all the names of the people whose votes didn't count in 2004 for one reason or another and they are making sure their vote will count this time around.

We clearly need some help here from people with power. We need to get the world out to all organizations accross the country... churches, schools, etc., and ask all voters to verify their voter registration to make sure it is valid and up to date.

So we don't need a get out the vote drive for new voter registration, we need a verify to vote drive including all americans to check their registration. We need to make sure that every vote gets counted.

If there is any tampering with this election I think we should all protest in the streets like they do in France. As long as they can get away wtih it they will always grab the power that they can steal.

Did you people even read the link to the article? Why are you so slap-happy to scream that the Republican party is trying to steal the election? There must be a system in place to verify the lawful address of a voter. Should people have to reregister every election? No. Then come up with a better way to make sure the citizens of a community are voting in the correct community.

The problem is that the republicans are against any transparent voter registration methods that make sense, like registering driver's license holders who qualifiy to vote automatically. The republicans are getting their butts kicked across the country in terms of registering new voters, so their only recourse is to nullify new democratic party voters, or cage so many existing voters that the increase is cancelled out.

Never heard of the term voter caging. But I know in my county in Texas, in the election race for the County Tax Assessor (who also oversees voter registration) the complaint against the incumbent was that she purged over 60,000 names from the voter rolls. And one of those was my husband who was registered and voted every time I did. But he had to re-register in order to vote in the March primary.

BTW, the incumbent won the election anyway.

Everyone needs to make it clear to their state reps and senate and attorney general that in their particular state the voters will not let this happen again. Write or call their offices and demand they make every effort in their power that there will be no voter intimidation this time.

Where I live we have an all mail-in ballot so there won't be any of that going on here. As far as I know, there have never been any problems with our voting.

I would suggest that everyone go to mail-in ballots. As soon as we did that, the amount of people voting went up about 9%. (People tend to vote more when it is so damn easy. All you need is a stamp). Also with mail-in, there are no machines to tamper with. In fact that is part of the justification for going to a mail-in ballot: The voting machines now are electronic instead of mechanical so are a lot easier to tamper with now.
