Voter Caging

Truthout:

How many voter-registration mass mailers are "returned to sender" in the run-up to Election Day may determine how many Ohio residents are eligible to vote.

Ohio election officials are sending out a mass mailer stamped "do not forward" to all registered voters today (Sept. 5) with an absentee ballot application and other important notices for Nov. 4.

What's important here is not so much what's going out as what's being returned to sender.

At what point in the future will America need to accept outside help in order to get elections right? The election system is so deeply flawed and open to partisan influence (hello Bush 2000), the results seem to be a mockery of the voters' actual actions.

USA is quick to point out flaws in other democratic voting processes (Zimbabwe, anyone?), but steadfastly refuses to let the current system - the failure of which has plunged America into depths previously unheard of, both locally and internationally - be properly overhauled by competent people.

As a non-US resident, it breaks my heart to see the the voting system and the Republican army of evil destroy the once-great America from the inside out.

Don't be to upset. Challenged votes may be thrown out but Obamas Acorn buddies are there doing their thing. It probably balances out. At least a few of them got caught.

I just heard a good idea on the Pe ter B Coll ins show today on AAR. A caller suggested that we fi ght f i r e with fi re here. What if, for this upcoming general election we Dems urged everyone to re-register as Re pub licans in the next week or so. That way if EVERYONE is registered Rep ub lican the Repugnicans wont know who to purge from the voter roll. They will just think it is a bunch of nice new voters who were turned on by Sarah Pom Poms Palin. We would urge people to re-register Dem or whatever after the election. What d'yall think of this plan? And Repug tro//s dont bother! We will measure the possible efficacy of this plan in direct proportion to the amount of discouragement and protestation you proffer!

Not bad. Or for those who can't stand being labeled R even for a second, they can register Independent.

That is not a bad idea! They are hoping they will sway & snare Independents in the end! I might do that myself (because I am one of those queasy types. I am usually registered Green to help them gain matching funds and win local elections!)

Better make sure people understand if they register as a Republican that they can vote as a Democrat.

Fine. Let the GOP steal another election. It will be the LAST one you steal, Americans will promise you that.

Everyone knows what will happen if they steal another election. We aren't stupid.

Fine. I'm ready.

But of course ... do you think GE wants to risk a fair interpretation of the debates with someone other than an establishment water carrier like David Gregory?

I still remember his "Dream Girls-esque" backup of Karl Rove's Rap Routine. David Gregory is as transparent as they come.

Sometimes I wonder why I go to these stories that I just know are going to tick me off.I too don't understand why this voter fraud caging hasn't been addressed by Dems. This is nothing new and yet instead of reading a story about how everything is cleaned up and all votes will be counted,we get this. Why do I suspect it's worse now than ever before?Because we have a fantastic candidate and they have a -------and they're running neck and neck.

Please advise STUDENTS living on campus to vote absentee ballot in their home state IF this is going to be a problem for them in their school's home state!!

People PLEASE register to vote before October 3rd. If possible request an absentee ballot and vote EARLY. I am not taking any chances with the republicans this year; they like to disenfranchise voters, especially minorities.

So, if you don't have to deal with them on November 4th - do NOT!

In Maryland you can request an absentee ballot. The deadline is October 28. PLEASE, vote and vote early!

The Code of Virginia states that a student must declare a legal residence in order to register. A legal residence can be either a student's permanent address from home or their current college residence. By making Montgomery County your permanent residence, you have declared your independence from your parents and can no longer be claimed as a dependent on their income tax filings --- check with your tax professional. If you have a scholarship attached to your former residence, you could lose this funding. And, if you change your registration to Montgomery County, Virginia Code requires you to change your driver's license and car registration to your present address within 30 days.

But I'm sure you have to be registered beforehand.

Only a handful of states allow on the spot registration.

we do use evm - but we also have verifiable paper ballots. so that helps. BUT, voter caging was rampant in my neck of the woods - so it is kinda up to each and every one of us to ensure our right to vote.

This is what's been worrying me as I watch the McCain campaign. I thought at one point the GOP had given up... Their candidate is weak, and has no new ideas, 80% of Americans think the country is headed in the wrong direction, the middle class bearing the brunt of the Bush economy, the horribly run RNC in Minnesota...

Then it hit me: The Gop hasn't given up... the GOP knows the election doesn't matter! Voting is a quaint little diversion for them.

As my brother said: Do I think McCain is going to win in November? No way. Do I think McCain will be the next president? Probably.
