Daily Kos:

This is why the work on the ground in terms of registration is so important: in August alone, the Obama campaign registered 49,000 new voters in Virginia:

State election officials told the campaign Friday that 49,000 new voters signed up in August, a sharp increase from the 36,500 who signed up in July and the 28,000 who registered in June.

The goal of the Obama campaign was 150,000 total by the time the October 5th deadline rolls around, which leaves one month to get the remaining 36,500. Hats off to all VA Democrats who must have been working so hard on this.

It's not about polls. It's about turnout and if the general is like the primaries, Democrats will turn out in at least double the numbers of the Republicans. That is the game right there. The Obama team is super smart; doing what counts. Registering even more voters. This will be an Obama landslide all across.

I am seeing the same here in Central PA...

During the primary, we turned my county from red to blue for the first time since the 1970s. On a daily basis, we continue to register more voters, the overwhelming majority of them are Democrats.

Conversely, the GOP is doing NOTHING locally. Their overconfidence is wonderful. They will lose this swing state and I will be proud to have helped.

Bay Buchanon was so orgasmic over the Palin pick on CNN, she actually said they didn't need to do any ground work, because the conservative base will all show up to vote for McCain now. I am not kidding! Keep thinking that Bay.

That was horrible.

I take issue with the "supermom" label.

Look at her dysfunctional kids. And who is raising her handicapped baby?

More evidence that Obama's is the campaign of grassroots activism, and McCain's the campaign of sour grapes.

Despite the lies from the RNC and the media giving McCain a free pass, we are still working for victory undeterred by the same old partisan playbook.

Please note: 32% of elgible African Americans are not registered to vote. Look at the southern states of Georgia, N and S Carolina and Florida (who by the way has the 2nd highest Af American population in the nation)..... Let me be clear. That is nearly 7 million people...many of whom I have personally seen wearing Obama gear, yet will not be able to do a thing on Nov 4, but to watch election coverage on TV.
1-866-MY-VOTE1 - will register you over the phone. There is no excuse.

Obama's campaign is not out to register people to vote for him, per se, but no matter as Democrats seem to be getting a larger number of new voters...ie, the steady demise of the Republican Party. There are fewer Repub voters each election year, it's just that Democrats have not voted as much. I think this year will be different. Help me make that possible.

There is a large voter registration drive going, but please....do what you can to pass this along.

It may be uncomfortable for some to help out or even go into certain neighborhoods where you can be of help, but please think about our futures. We are truly in this together.

I am a suburb raised Af. American, but believe me...if it takes going into a neighborhood I am not familiar with, I will do it. Please join me!

this is the whole key to the election because:

This election is dead even at the moment and the republicans will be better at increasing their share of the vote in the closing days of the election and there is the Bradley effect (non AfroAmer voters who say they will vote black but don't). The one factor that will wipe all this out is turnout and I wonder how much turnout has been factored into all these polls. My guess is that turnout will be underestimated this year among African Americans because pollsters are businessmen and for a businessman it makes more sense to just do what you did before and be surprised, as opposed to taking a chance on something new, like unprecedented black turnout, and be proved wrong.

People always say elections depend on turnout because it is a handy tautology but this year it is everything for Obama.

HERE HERE! My intentions exactly, not just to get them registered, but to go get them on November 4, and take them to the polls. Trick down here, since Presidential Election Day is not a holiday, in no early voting states, employers offer o/t and early arrivals on Election Day, and call for 'mandatory overtime' till poll closings. This is factual, I have seen it happen, in 2000 and 2004.

With the economic situation, its a trap that is taken by most. Biggest culprit is the 'Company Store' with the initials W and M..

Another population to target is the student/college population that is getting back to school. Many of them support Obama, but need to be reminded to register and get to the polls.

Thank you for your efforts in Pennsylvania. I am doing the same here in Ohio. McSame has energized the ground troops of the right-wing with his pick of Palin and we absolutely have to continue canvassing these overlooked neighborhoods, all neighborhoods where we can find voters.

You don't have to register with some website if you really don't want to. All it takes is a call to your local Democratic headquarters to help out, their number is in the book or you can find it online by doing a search on Google. Those who live in areas that are not served well by a local office might have to do a little more searching but we all can do something to make America's future bright again.

VA is the states people like me (from the MD burbs) have been volunteering in. We will definitely surpass the campaign goal of 150,000 new voters. Even before this election cycle Democrats won the governor's race and one of the two state senate races. The other senate race, retiring John Warner, has popular VA former governor Mark Warner running basically unopposed by the GOP. Northern VA, which is full of people who migrated from new england and votes more like DC and MD, has finally outnumbered the rest of conservative Virginia (in the south and west). You can take VA off the list of 'battle ground' states: Obama will definitely win VA in November.

Oh, let's hope 964. I moved from NOVA after 33 years to Az last year and am so happy to hear VA could go blue! It's been a long time coming. Webb beating Allen was a great surprise. The ultra conservative Repubs. have taken over the party in VA and I think that will hurt them in the long run, any moderate Repubs in the burbs may be more likely to vote Dem considering the swing to the extreme right by the state GOP.

Grass roots have not helped Obama. Several polls now have McCain up by as much as 3 percentage points. The gig is up! Americans don't want change, they'd rather have an unremarkable POW and untested "soccer mom" win the election. Obama is finished.

"several new polls have McCain up by as much as 3 percentage points..."

1. I have not seen those polls. where are they located?
2. Americans don't want change? Why is McCain trying to become Obama?
3. Obama is finished? Based upon "several new polls?"
4. Here are some stats for you. Obama is winning the money race hands down. He has raised around $374 million (from grassroots donors) to McCain's 141 million. He has the money cushion to blitz the swing states with ads highlighting the Republicans lack of economic policy during the final week of the campaign. Plus, just imagine the rhetorical tidal wave awaiting McCain on election eve from Obama.

Just saw the gallup poll. We shall see. I think the Obama campaign has the right idea. Ignore the polling data until the contest. It has worked for us. The glow of this desperate gamble is beginning to fade, and people need to be reminded of the economy. The economy is the key to victory.

LOL, are you really relying on these polls? Have these polls polled all these people that are newly registered? NO. Obama has a massive grassroots campaign, and you'll only know the effect after the votes have been tallied. The man will win by a landslide.

The new voters are the ones that the campaign volunteers have added to the Dem voter list. Anything outside of those specific campaign efforts is just bonus! But that 150k doesn't include any work out side the campaign volunteers' work. So if you add-in people like you, and others who switched from being registered republicans or independents to Democrats that total number is way way bigger - easily over 200k.

Yes voter registration is crucial as well as getting out the vote especially in the swing states.
The recent polls are worrying.
After that dismal GOP convention, Zogby has McCain up 49.7% to Obama 45.1% and Rasmusse have them tied at 48%.

You are right that getting the vote out in swing states is VERY important! I just got a friend registered in republican Texas, now living in VA [a swing state] to register in VA, where his democratic vote will count!!! I urge all of you living in swing states, to transfer your registration to your current state. That way YOUR VOTE WILL COUNT! And all of you, get at least 10 new people committed to voting for obama. I got a total of 5 so far!!!

You should be worried. Most Americans are sadistic, masochistic amnesiacs. They aren't the least bit worried about handing over the WH to McCain and Palin. The Obama campaign doesn't get it. Most Americans don't mind being lied to and taken advantage of as long as the perpetrator has a "good story". If Obama doesn't get down and dirty quick, he's done.

Truth in Jest?

An unflinching John McCain was told Tuesday by New Hampshire high school students he might be too old to be president and too conservative to be respected.

McCain, the Arizona senator whose presidential bid has stumbled through the summer, countered the Concord High School students with humor.

“Thanks for the question, you little jerk,” McCain joked back to one student who asked the 71-year-old about his age. “You’re drafted.”
