Obama Camp: 49,000 New Voters In Virginia

This is why the work on the ground in terms of registration is so important: in August alone, the Obama campaign registered 49,000 new voters in Virginia:

State election officials told the campaign Friday that 49,000 new voters signed up in August, a sharp increase from the 36,500 who signed up in July and the 28,000 who registered in June.

The goal of the Obama campaign was 150,000 total by the time the October 5th deadline rolls around, which leaves one month to get the remaining 36,500. Hats off to all VA Democrats who must have been working so hard on this.

Please advise STUDENTS living on campus to vote absentee ballot in their home state IF this is going to be a problem!!

People PLEASE register to vote before October 3rd. If possible request an absentee ballot and vote EARLY. I am not taking any chances with the republicans this year; they like to disenfranchise voters, especially minorities.

So, if you don't have to deal with them on November 4th - do NOT!

In Maryland you can request an absentee ballot. The deadline is October 28. PLEASE, vote and vote early!

Thank you for this post. First time voters who attend college out of their home state need to get absentee ballots immediately, and to do so they have to obtain and fill out an application (from their home state board of elections) and send it in before the ballot will even be sent to them. There are deadlines for each of these steps. I truly hope the Obama campaign, League of Women Voters, etc. are addressing this issue...

This I can believe! 49,000 new voters speaks volumns because there are those down here, who have NEVER voted, because of the non-contested elections held in this state. It was of no consequence to vote, it wouldn't make a bit of difference, because there was no difference on the ballots. I am speaking of the disenfranchised in SW Virginia, and in the 6th District and those in the Roanoke Area.

Believe me, 49,000 is a drop in the bucket, Democrats there are more and they are up for grabs.

It is very amazing here in VA. I attend the University of Virginia and the volunteers are out EVERY day. 9 times out of 10 when I walk to class, I get asked if I am registered by an Obama supporter with a clipboard. It's incredible! This is exactly why the polls don't mean much to me, because of small town, big state grassroots efforts that will come through for us in November. We can't get too cocky, so let's keep registering those who need it!

FYI Voter Intimadation on college campuses in VA?
Last week, Virginia’s Montgomery County, home to Virginia Tech, issued a press release regarding proper protocol for college students registering to vote. In interviews with Inside Higher Ed Tuesday, it was described by turns as “unsubstantiated,” “chilling,” and (more generously) as not “incredibly encouraging or friendly.”

It reads, in part: “The Code of Virginia states that a student must declare a legal residence in order to register. A legal residence can be either a student’s permanent address from home or their current college residence. By making Montgomery County your permanent residence, you have declared your independence from your parents and can no longer be claimed as a dependent on their income tax filings — check with your tax professional. If you have a scholarship attached to your former residence, you could lose this funding. And, if you change your registration to Montgomery County, Virginia Code requires you to change your driver’s license and car registration to your present address within 30 days.”

The county registrar of elections said Tuesday that the memo was intended to counteract the absence of cautionary information given to students signed up through the ubiquitous get-out-the-vote registration drives. Generally speaking, however, those interviewed for this article said the warnings are, at worst, farfetched and misleading, or, at best, overstated and not typically supported in reality.
