WASHINGTON — Democrat Barack Obama says he would delay rescinding President Bush's tax cuts on wealthy Americans if he becomes the next president and the economy is in a recession, suggesting such an increase would further hurt the economy.

Nevertheless, Obama has no plans to extend the Bush tax cuts beyond their expiration date, as Republican John McCain advocates. Instead, Obama wants to push for his promised tax cuts for the middle class, he said in a broadcast interview aired Sunday.

"Even if we're still in a recession, I'm going to go through with my tax cuts," Obama said. "That's my priority."

What about increasing taxes on the wealthy?

"I think we've got to take a look and see where the economy is. I mean, the economy is weak right now," Obama said on "This Week" on ABC. "The news with Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae, I think, along with the unemployment numbers, indicates that we're fragile."

Obama was referring to the two mortgage companies taken over by the federal government Sunday in what could become a huge taxpayer bailout. The nation's unemployment rate climbed to 6.1 percent in August from 5.7 percent the month before, the government said last week. It was the first time in five years that the unemployment rate had topped 6 percent.

Obama and McCain have sparred over tax policy for months. Obama says McCain wants to continue Bush administration policies, noting that McCain had voted against the Bush tax cuts but then embraced them as he campaigned for the Republican presidential nomination.

"John McCain likes to talk about fiscal responsibility, but there is no doubt that his proposals blow a hole through the budget," Obama said.

McCain has repeatedly hammered Obama over taxes in an attempt to paint him as a typical tax-and-spend liberal. McCain wants to make permanent the Bush tax cuts, which are set to expire at the end of 2010.

"We can get this economy back on it's feet," McCain said in an interview aired Sunday on "Face the Nation" on CBS. "Don't raise their taxes. Get it going again. Americans are hurting in a way that they have not hurt for a long time."

The Tax Policy Center, a think tank run jointly by the Brookings Institution and the Urban Institute, concluded that Obama's tax plan would benefit middle-income taxpayers more than McCain's. However, Obama would raise payroll taxes on taxpayers with incomes above $250,000, and he would raise corporate taxes. Small businesses that make more than $250,000 a year also would see taxes rise.

McCain's plan cuts taxes across all income levels. It would cut taxes for those in the top 1 percent by more than $125,000, raising their after-tax income an average 9.5 percent, the center concluded.

Ummm, what??

did obama just become an ignorant on the economy?

A) the tax cuts for the wealthy being said to hurt the economy if rescinded, actually then by default says the converse.... Tax cuts for the wealthy Help the economy.
.......??
B) the facts are - Facts - Listen facts are - MORE tax cuts for the wealthy that already pay a lower tax rate than their receptionists, have NEVER helped the economy, but instead have helped to TANK it.

Rich people take their freebies and hoard them and do not spend them in the economy.

They are not venture capitalists sitting around wondering "gosh, if only i had an extra 8.4 million dollars from tax 'releif' phew! releif!, then i could invest my other 73.2 million i have stuffed in my pockets in that new telecom i have been wanting to start.. but oh well, poor me, i guess i'll just have to wait for another republican to be elected so i can somehow get that extra "releif" from my taxation oh.. oh.. oh.. phew!... releif... oh thank god, didnt know how i would make more cash on my own, i need the Feds to help me."

"Rich people take their freebies and hoard them and do not spend them in the economy."

Why is then when you cut the capital gains tax the government actually takes in more money?

Usually a short term effect per Warren Buffet. Thye rush to take advatage of gains...

How much gains do you think there are with stock makret now flat for 8 years?

The problem is they will invest their money, but it may not be here if higher returns are elsewhere. Its global!

The Bush tax cuts did not pay for themselves... it was credit card spending... it increased the money supply and devalued the dollar and increased inflation..

Look at the results??? over 8 years, jobless recoveries , huge deficts.. loss of 4.5 million MFG jobs...

Regards

yes, these are the realities. You can't increase taxes when the economy is weak. Obama is right to back off on this one.

BUT Obama could go after the bloated military budget but he is not talking about that because he does not want to look weak on security. The DOD wastes many billions/year; its a crime. But you don't hear either candidate addressing this issue.

Cutting back on no bid crony contracts doesn’t make a President look weak. The way to look weak is to ignore a Presidential daily briefing titled “bin Laden determined to strike U.S.” and then get blind sided by a mad man living in a cave in Afghanistan. That’s how to make America look like a fumbling dinosaur.

Hmm, a memo like that would not really lead anyone to stopping the crazy things that happened on 9/11 . . .

Another person who ignores reality. Clinton increased taxes; rethugs declared economic doom. Guess what happened.

What are you talking about?

Raise taxes during a recession is a dumb idea . . . even liberals know that.

Yea, wouldn’t want the sales of polo ponies or nick knacks from Tiffany’s to drop, devastating effect on the economy don’t you know.

He is a political animal of the worst kind!! He hoodwinked Democrats when he lost 9 of the last 13 primaries by saying not to worry - he would turn NC and GA blue!! Maybe even Kansas!! Now he will struggle to hold on to Kerry's states!!

So Obama finally recognizes that any additional taxation is a drag on the economy.

Good for him.

When has he not known that?

Obama's always known that. Get over your preconceived ideas. It's only McCain who's having to embrace stereotypical economic positions. His party demands it of him.

He knows that.. the taxes will be neccessary just like after Reagan at some point... you ran up huge deficits... they devalue the dollar, increase inflation. You got a huge tax increase... the dollar devaluation of 50% , is a 50% decline ultimately in buying power/networth... thats a heck of a tax and not all that hidden if you look just a bit.

No one likes taxes, but if you borrow money for tax cust and for wars.. then at somepoint its payback time one way or the other..... unles you belive in a free lunch!

Actually he's always known that, which is why his plans give more tax breaks than McCain's, but he also realizes that not taxing leads to larger deficits which are also a drag on the economy

It seems like we could increase the tax breaks for the lower income folks so they could buy a shirt or a loaf of bread or for Mrs McCain so she could by anothe Oscar de Lorenza dress.
Who is the elitist in this scenario.

If you can't buy a shirt or a loaf of bread you are already in the lowest bracket that DOESN'T PAY TAXES.

Poor people don't pay taxes? Do you have any idea how little money you have to make to pay no taxes? No you don't know. Because you don't really care.

Lol! I like that.

I've learned to check the belly-achers other entries before deciding if it's worth my time and it never is. If they've accused O of flip-flopping now, they probably did in the past along with other negatives and so I just shake my head and move on to the next post.

Interesting. Corporate welfare plus public welfare. Why does that sound like a total disconnect? Probably, because it assumes there's an advantage to corporate welfare for monopolies.
