WASHINGTON — Democrat Barack Obama says he would delay rescinding President Bush's tax cuts on wealthy Americans if he becomes the next president and the economy is in a recession, suggesting such an increase would further hurt the economy.

Nevertheless, Obama has no plans to extend the Bush tax cuts beyond their expiration date, as Republican John McCain advocates. Instead, Obama wants to push for his promised tax cuts for the middle class, he said in a broadcast interview aired Sunday.

"Even if we're still in a recession, I'm going to go through with my tax cuts," Obama said. "That's my priority."

What about increasing taxes on the wealthy?

"I think we've got to take a look and see where the economy is. I mean, the economy is weak right now," Obama said on "This Week" on ABC. "The news with Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae, I think, along with the unemployment numbers, indicates that we're fragile."

Obama was referring to the two mortgage companies taken over by the federal government Sunday in what could become a huge taxpayer bailout. The nation's unemployment rate climbed to 6.1 percent in August from 5.7 percent the month before, the government said last week. It was the first time in five years that the unemployment rate had topped 6 percent.

Obama and McCain have sparred over tax policy for months. Obama says McCain wants to continue Bush administration policies, noting that McCain had voted against the Bush tax cuts but then embraced them as he campaigned for the Republican presidential nomination.

"John McCain likes to talk about fiscal responsibility, but there is no doubt that his proposals blow a hole through the budget," Obama said.

McCain has repeatedly hammered Obama over taxes in an attempt to paint him as a typical tax-and-spend liberal. McCain wants to make permanent the Bush tax cuts, which are set to expire at the end of 2010.

"We can get this economy back on it's feet," McCain said in an interview aired Sunday on "Face the Nation" on CBS. "Don't raise their taxes. Get it going again. Americans are hurting in a way that they have not hurt for a long time."

The Tax Policy Center, a think tank run jointly by the Brookings Institution and the Urban Institute, concluded that Obama's tax plan would benefit middle-income taxpayers more than McCain's. However, Obama would raise payroll taxes on taxpayers with incomes above $250,000, and he would raise corporate taxes. Small businesses that make more than $250,000 a year also would see taxes rise.

McCain's plan cuts taxes across all income levels. It would cut taxes for those in the top 1 percent by more than $125,000, raising their after-tax income an average 9.5 percent, the center concluded.

Obama's right....raising taxes slows the economy.

It's pretty simple. If you had to pay half of what you make in taxes, would you spend less, or more?

It's the same with businesses (and most businesses in this country...you know, the ones you're employed by...are not huge corporations getting huge tax breaks. They are small businesses that do more to help this country (in the jobs they provide and taxes they pay) than you every will.

Do you think that is because Major Corporations have moved almost all manufacturing and customer service to other countries? I work for a Major Corporation and in my 8+ years my division has closed 5 plants while expanding several in Mexico, opening new ones in China, we have customer service in the Philippines, an engineering center in India and we use Indian IT to the tune of no new American IT hires in the last 7 years.

I would argue that this was only possible by the current governmental climate of the past 10, 20 or 40 years. I would also make the statement that Big Business does what it can to make more money, always. If a company can LEGALLY move a plant from the USA to Mexico and get 4 shop floor workers for the price of 1 and later move that plant to China and get that same 4 to 1 cost savings again, they will do it every time.

I always have to question that even with the reduced employee cost you would incur greater shipping costs as well as have to take, in the case of China, the 5 weeks worth of additional Finished Goods inventory into account in the total savings. Perhaps there are tax breaks or other financial incentives that I don’t know about. But I if all of this adds up to a 2 or 3 % savings it is still a savings at the end of the day.

So lets recap, Obama now for drilling, the tax cuts, the surge worked, no more timetable on withdrawl from Iraq, Was going to fillibuster the wiretapping act but didnt, voted for the tax breaks to the oil companies but now that was a bad idea...
Help me out what else am I missing?
I thought I knew this candidate and what he stood for!

Stupid stupid stupid!
Those people who benefitted greatly from the last 8 years are not job creators, they are a net drain on society. The continue to spend regardless of the general economy. Bring the tax rate back to what it was under Clinton, the economy grew pretty damn nicely under those higher taxes.
Ever notice how most new Mercedes are AMGs?
Republican businesses are nothing but welfare programs anyway ... Can't make it without huge tax breaks, can't make it if the minimum wage is increased, can't make it if I have to be regulated, can't make it if BLAH BLAH BLAH. But when there are losses, they all want the welfare teat to nurse on. Profits are Capitalism, Losses are Socialist.
I started an Organic Hydroponic vegetable company, I pay my taxes, pay my people way over minimum wage, pay for them and their families health insurance, and I still make a very very good profit.
If any business or individual want to not pay taxes, fine, then stay off my roads, stop using my power lines, stay out of airports, sports arenas, etc .. they were all paid for by people who pay their taxes.

To all GOP trolls posting on this as a "flip-flop":

The Bush(McCain) administration has destroyed the economy to the point that the Fed had to undertake the exterme action of TAKING OVER FANNIE AND FREDDIE this weekend. FANNIE and FREDDIE hold close to 6 TRILLION DOLLARS of mortgages and ALL OF IT IS AT RISK. If FANNIE and FREDDIE were allowed to fail, it would mean the END OF LIFE AS WE KNOW IT and they were so close to this that the fed was FORCED TO STEP IN and BACK THEIR MISMANAGEMENT WITH OUR TAX DOLLARS.

This is NOT going to be easy to fix. Whoever comes into office is going to face hellish problems on all fronts. Personally, I'd prefer having someone in office that is capable of thinking and acting rationally and who puts the many ahead of the few, so I'll vote Obama.

But for fhose who feel it's best to have the lobbyists that got us here writing the policies that will cement our demise, who describe the last minute choice of an attractive nut job to appeal to the "soon to be raptured away" base as a "good choice", who cling to the Global Warming is fake" meme when all they have to do to prove it is look out their frickin' windows, I wish you all that your greed, hate and monumental stupidity deserve.

But as a word of advice: keep it to yourselves in the bread lines. It could get ugly...

There is a distinction between flip-flop and a reasoned change of opinion. Obama's action fits into the latter, IMO. It's typical of both sides to not recognize the difference, though.

That being said, let's stick to the facts. It was not the Bush administration (of which McCain was NOT a part of...yes, that's a fact) the caused the housing market to crash and led to the fed takeover and Fannie and Freddie. One thinking and acting rationally would certainly understand this.

This is why we are in TROUBLE in this country. While all the people who are REPUBLICANS that have posted on this blog today are laughing their heads off, you forget that when "LIBERALS" get screwed over, so do the rest of you. I wish that i could find some republicans who really have the future of their own children in mind, instead of wanting someone who has a different view than you, suffer. WE ARE ALL SUFFERING. I don't gloat when anyone is in the trouble that most of Americans are in. Democrats, don't turn on Obama because he is telling you the truth. It is going to take alot of work and sacrafice fromus all in order to reverse the past nine years. Please don't lose heart. That what they wnat us to do!

Hey, if I thought paying 60% of everything I made would solve all of the problems we face, I would do it gladly. I don't. And nobody has made much progress in making a reasonable case that it would.

At least Obama is a realist. While he advocates dropping bush's tax cuts for the wealthy in favor of the middle class, he knows that this country has been screwed by the current administration and conditions may have to stay a little longer, but not permanently. Same with the Iraq withdrawal: he wants the 16-month timetable, but should hell break loose before then, he will adjust to the situation. The man thinks, unlike mccain who believes everything has only one way to go. A good businessman, like a good leader, has contingency plans. Obama has admitted that the surge has worked to a point. However, there was supposed to be three parts that the surge was to accomplish, dowing the violence was just one. As far as the Iraqi government getting its act together so we could leave, they haven't. And there still is no agreement by the three Iraqi groups as to how to divide the oil revenues. If the surge has worked, why are the increased troops still there? Why is bush only now looking to pull out a few thousand troops after the first of the year? Why can't the Iraqis decide when to hold elections? That's why Obama won't admit that the surge has totally worked. It hasn't.

You will notice that there was not one quoted comment by Obama that says what this writer thinks he said. When I hear the words come out of Obama's mouth, I will believe it. It appears this writer made that interpretation (that Obama wouldn't rescind Bush's tax cuts on the wealthy) from something Obama said. But, I didn't see it in anything quoted to Obama in this article.

What's going on with the Huffington Post. It's starting to look more and more like Politico every day.

i think it's funny that republicans all fantasize that THEY are part of that 1% elite club that gets the tax breaks, instead of the struggling middle and lower class yokels they actually are, and it boggles the mind that they keep voting against their own interests.

if the tax breaks for the super-rich "worked" (trickle down theory, having been completely discredited), it would be WORKING NOW AND WE WOULD NOT BE IN RECESSION. it doesn't work. it won't work, and it is humiliating for all these desperate wannabe republicans to try and act like they will benefit in some mysterious way from making the uber-rich even richer. guess what, buddy? they are USING YOU, and won't think twice about you running behind, eating their dust...

so what if 3 yacht makers see orders drop? you give the middle class their own money to spend and you will see EVERY BUSINESS IN EVERY SECTOR improving, wages increasing and the economy back on track, because the super-rich simply don't spend broadly enough with that last $125K they are being handed...

I just took a peek at the Daily Kos. Wow, they have one of the most comically transparent rationalizations I have ever seen as they try to spin the latest poll results. Haha, libs all over America are getting desparate.

(THEE most comical rationalization I ever saw was the New York Times' endorsement of Hillary in her very first Senate run. Wish I had saved it so I could show you.)

Oh well, better now than to drag it out, I suppose.
