WASHINGTON — Democrat Barack Obama says he would delay rescinding President Bush's tax cuts on wealthy Americans if he becomes the next president and the economy is in a recession, suggesting such an increase would further hurt the economy.

Nevertheless, Obama has no plans to extend the Bush tax cuts beyond their expiration date, as Republican John McCain advocates. Instead, Obama wants to push for his promised tax cuts for the middle class, he said in a broadcast interview aired Sunday.

"Even if we're still in a recession, I'm going to go through with my tax cuts," Obama said. "That's my priority."

What about increasing taxes on the wealthy?

"I think we've got to take a look and see where the economy is. I mean, the economy is weak right now," Obama said on "This Week" on ABC. "The news with Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae, I think, along with the unemployment numbers, indicates that we're fragile."

Obama was referring to the two mortgage companies taken over by the federal government Sunday in what could become a huge taxpayer bailout. The nation's unemployment rate climbed to 6.1 percent in August from 5.7 percent the month before, the government said last week. It was the first time in five years that the unemployment rate had topped 6 percent.

Obama and McCain have sparred over tax policy for months. Obama says McCain wants to continue Bush administration policies, noting that McCain had voted against the Bush tax cuts but then embraced them as he campaigned for the Republican presidential nomination.

"John McCain likes to talk about fiscal responsibility, but there is no doubt that his proposals blow a hole through the budget," Obama said.

McCain has repeatedly hammered Obama over taxes in an attempt to paint him as a typical tax-and-spend liberal. McCain wants to make permanent the Bush tax cuts, which are set to expire at the end of 2010.

"We can get this economy back on it's feet," McCain said in an interview aired Sunday on "Face the Nation" on CBS. "Don't raise their taxes. Get it going again. Americans are hurting in a way that they have not hurt for a long time."

The Tax Policy Center, a think tank run jointly by the Brookings Institution and the Urban Institute, concluded that Obama's tax plan would benefit middle-income taxpayers more than McCain's. However, Obama would raise payroll taxes on taxpayers with incomes above $250,000, and he would raise corporate taxes. Small businesses that make more than $250,000 a year also would see taxes rise.

McCain's plan cuts taxes across all income levels. It would cut taxes for those in the top 1 percent by more than $125,000, raising their after-tax income an average 9.5 percent, the center concluded.

democrats will never truly fight to win. Corporate power owns them as well, so they are not allowed to push liberal agendas with any real effort or vigor. Republicans on the other hand are in the favorable position of being henchmen for corporate power, so nothing is off limits to them. They can fight as hard and propose as wild of policies as they like. The system will never stop them from being pro corporation. Democrats on the other hand are owned by the same masters, stripping them of any leverage they might have. This creates contempt amongst their own flock because they show the cant be trusted. They cant honestly fight for greater democracy, workers rights, and economic fairness. They are republicans who have to pretend they're not, while real republicans can just be themselves.

As I keep saying, Democrats are not a real political party.
Democrats are republicans and that truth comes out every time there is an issue of importance.
The job of democrats is to co-opt progressive movements, get the people in them to believe that they can achieve their goals through the democratic party, then Nancy Pelosi destroys that progressive movement through inaction and votes of betrayal by the very people given the honor of leading that progressive movement.

With every pandering word he utters Obama becomes Nancy Pelosi.
Lest he be reminded, Nancy Pelosi is the most hated member of congress.

So then TAX cuts are GOOD for the economy, is what Obama is saying now? Like the Surge worked as well? This is getting very confusing, you think you know a candidate and in a matter of months everything changes.

Imagine that! Obama coming over to the right side pandering for votes. If he slips in the poles anymore I'd expect to see him to promise to extend the tax cuts permanently.

Are you people for real? Is it that you truly DO NOT UNDERSTAND,or you don't WANT to understand? Bush and McCain want to cut taxes REGARDLESS of the economy. How'd that work out? Obama is rightly assessing the economic situation before doing anything reckless. If he went ahead and did it and the economy got worse, you'd be crowing about that.
Obama wants to cut taxes for the poor and middle class - meaning the great majority of people in this country. They get their taxes cut, they have more money to spend, they spend it, the economy grows.
Remember when Bush gave out those rebate checks? What did they hope people did with them? BUY STUFF to help the economy.Unfortunately, they were so far in the hole - and gas prices were much higher then - that most people paid bills and filled up their tanks with most of that money.
Is this making it easier to understand? Well, just vote for Obama and you'll be alright.

We understand.
He starting to slip in the polls
So Obama is now doing the slip and slide.
Yeah slip and slide...I like how that sounds.
I was getting sick of saying flip flop all the time

He slides to the left and he slides to the right.
He slides all over trying to get it right.
You might not agree with everything he say.
Don't fault Obama ,he knows to other way.

Every day brings Obama spouting another REPUBLICAN talking point. The "surge is working"--uh, Obama, no it is not. We're still wasting $10 billion per month in Iraq with no end in sight. Now, it's "the Bush tax cuts will keep the recession from worsening." Sorry Obama, the Bush tax cuts are what got us into the mess we are in.

The simplistic Republican mantra that all tax cuts are good for the economy has been proven wrong over and over, yet it still gets repeated by the mindless robots. The same for the simplistic Republican nonsense that all tax increases are bad. Don't forget Clinton RAISED taxes in a downturn and the ever wrong Republicans ALL predicted a massive recession. And, they were all wrong as usual.

In a modern economy there are many factors that contribute to growth. Some of them are non-obvious, which is why the depth challenged Republicans can't get it. Tax increases can actually stimulate growth if properly handled. Tax cuts can curtail growth. It happens all the time.

The time to end the Bush/Republican tax folly is now. There is no common sense in having tax cuts for the wealthy when the government in hemorrhaging red ink.

If Obama doesn't do what he originally said and tax the rich, there goes the advantage he had with the independent Tax Center review that had his tax plan better than McCain.

He hasn't lost his talking point, but he put himself in the sling.

Taxing the people that already pay 90% of the income tax bill isn't really an "advantage". It's re-distribution of wealth.

So you prefer the government sponsored concentration of wealth like Bush is doing?

How are the Republican sponsored corporate (only) bailouts NOT re-distribution of wealth? Why do you like Market Communism over peoples' Socialism? Why do you think it's better?

I think you need more practice at "Doublespeak"

Neoliberal economics failed miserably. The most powerful "Free Market" beneficiaries are subsidized by Socialism while the needy are told "YOYO" ("You're On Your Own"). This is the most obsurd hypocracy one could imagine. Think about it:

***Socialism keeps the Capitalist markets alive to oppress the less fortunate. *** It's like pushing your car to work and people still cheer "Free Market" Capitalism like there is no other choice.

This is fascism with two parts slavery and garnished with raw genocide. Who besides the wealthiest, most evel darwinists would prefer Neoliberalism over Socialism or even **Communism**???

Are you people awake yet??? Is Obama awake???

Do you look at pictures of Rush's escapades in the DR while you harass progressives from your aunts basement? Does Cheney come by the junk yard and give you guys a group Hot Carl if you make your quota converting rednecks and recruiting pedophiles?

I'm not sure if Obama made it to Econ 101 but...what do 50 million Americans care about their income tax rates when they're unemployed and don't generate any income to tax anyway?

The rules of Neoliberal Economics are more cryptic the closer you look. Free Market Doublespeak strikes again.

You darwinists laugh because you have Socialism-sponsored protections like "Police" that make sure you and your corporatist cronies can exploit and oppress the masses and not have to answer.

When McNoma and Moose Knuckle are through with this economy, you'd better hope you can afford Blackwater to keep the tens of millions of ditch diggers, plumbers and fast-food workers from eating you once they find out you work for Limbaugh.

I see a few here who want higher taxes to fix the economy. The way to fix the economy is to curb government spending. Tax cuts are designed to stimulate the economy in that you allow the people to keep more of their money to invest and spend. Raising taxes hurts the economy almost as much as needless spending by the government. Before taxes are raised even one cent, the governmnet should be looking at where they can scale back before they tell Americans to tighten their belts.

Nice job with the talking points there. If tax cuts are supposed to be so great for the economy, then why has it gone MORE into the toilet after Bush made tax cuts? When you try something and it fails, your response is to do *more* of it? And if you were paying attention, you'd know that Obama does favor cutting needless spending. When you look at the two candidates' proposals, the main differences are that McCain wants to give a big tax cut to the rich, McCain wants to give a SMALLER tax cut to the middle class, and McCain's plan will make the national debt bigger.

The Bush tax cuts failed because they increased government spending, which devalued the currency due to increased debt. This inflation contributed to certain problems, such as increased commodities prices (such as oil).

Milo the problem is that spending is too high. Under Bush the Federal govenrment collected the highest amount of taxes ever.

That should make it obvious that spendign is the problem not rates.

And that is what pisses me off the most. Obama is telling the American people the truth. McCain tells people what they want to hear, and then after he gets elected he will do the opposite (does the phrase "read my lips" bring back any memories?).
The entire neocon economic platform is based upon privatizing everything so that the top 5% of the country owns everything and that wealth will "trickle down" to the rest of us poor slobs. 95% of us are the equivalent of dogs at the dinner table.
And people keep lottery-voting thinking that they might become one of the 5%.
Either that or if they honestly believe if they vote for Obama they will go to hell.
There is just no reasoning with that mentality, and it is destroying our country - if it hasn't already.

Here is Senator John McCain in 2001:

"But I cannot in good conscience support a tax cut in which so many of the benefits go to the most fortunate among us, at the expense of the middle class Americans who MOST need tax relief."
--John McCain, May 26, 2001

http://frwebgate.access.gpo.gov/cgi-bin/getpage.cgi?dbname=2001_record&page=S5789&position=all

These are the same tax cuts that are the heart of his tax policy as a presidential candidate.
