Bridge

On the campaign trail Saturday, Gov. Sarah Palin defended her record on earmarks and spending claiming - per ABC's Jake Tapper - that she "championed reform of earmark spending by Congress, and I told the Congress thanks but no thanks on that 'Bridge to Nowhere.' If our state wanted a bridge, we'd build it ourselves."

By now, it is evident that the Alaska Republican is either knowingly deceiving voters or simply has her facts wrong when it comes to her support for the bridge. Palin backed the project when she ran for the governor's seat, even posing for a picture holding a t-shirt reading "Nowhere, Alaska" - a sympathetic gesture to the ridiculed construction plans.

And, it turns out, she once promised the voters of her home state that she would not only come to the defense of the bridge but would "not allow the spinmeisters to turn this project or any other into something that's so negative."

Here Palin is from an October 2, 2006 interview with the Ketchikan Daily News, conducted before she was elected governor (and before her opposition to the Bridge to Nowhere became a linchpin of her national persona).

"Asked what issues she's hearing about from Southeast Alaskans, Palin said many residents here feel they've been ignored in some sense.

"I'm hearing from a lot of Southeast residents who believe that maybe they haven't been given their due respect," she said. "Part of my agenda is making sure that Southeast is heard. That your projects are important. That we go to bat for Southeast when we're up against federal influences that aren't in the best interest of Southeast."

She cited the widespread negative attention focused on the Gravina Island crossing project.

"We need to come to the defense of Southeast Alaska when proposals are on the table like the bridge and not allow the spinmeisters to turn this project or any other into something that's so negative," Palin said.

The Gravina bridge proposal has been a priority of Govs. Frank Murkowski, Tony Knowles and previous governors as well as the Alaska Department of Transportation, said Palin.

"There needs to be a link between Ketchikan and its future and its future opportunities and progress, opening up land in this area," she said.

Then there is this quote that was picked up by NPR, in which Palin praised the pork that the Alaska congressional delegation was able to secure in the transportation bill. The praise of Don Young, who has been ridiculed for his earmarks and is under criminal investigation for his dealings with Alaska oil services company Veco Corp., is particularly problematic.

"And our congressional delegation, God bless 'em. They do a great job for us," Palin said at the forum hosted by the Alaska Professional Design Council. "Representative Don Young, especially God bless him, with transportation -- Alaska did so well under the very basic provisions of the transportation act that he wrote just a couple of years ago. We had a nice bump there. We're very, very fortunate to receive the largesse that Don Young was able to put together for Alaska."

These are The Facts on Sarah Palin's policies:::::::::::::

FOREIGN POLICY:

She has none. Palin admits that she "hasn’t given the war In Iraq much thought", but is sending her son there to fight next week.

GOD, WAR & OIL:

Palin Believes That The Iraq War Is "A Task From God." Speaking at the Wasilla Assembly of God church in June, Palin said that “our leaders, our national leaders, are sending [U.S. soldiers] out on a task that is from God.” [Huffington Post, 9/2/08]
Palin Believes The Iraq War Was Fought Over Oil. “We are a nation at war and in many [ways] the reasons for war are fights over energy sources,” Palin told BusinessWeek in an interview. [BusinessWeek, 8/29/08]

If money is appropriated for one project in a state and that project is canceled is it even legal for the state to keep the money and re-allocate it to whatever other project the governor wants?

That seems to be an easy way to get funding for a project that congress wouldn't approve and I'm having trouble believing it's legal.

Is it ethical? No, but legal, Yes, I'm afraid it is. It all depends on the legal language used to secure the earmark. And in most cases, it is congress job to investigate any misappropriation of federal funds.

With the republicans in the justice department stonewalling Democratic calls for any investigations of Republican graft, not much will ever be done about it soon. We would first need a change in administration, and if Palin gets in with McCain, you can just about forget the politically laden justice department doing their duty with those two in office.

The Republicans won’t appoint an honest Attorney General, like former US Attorney General Janet Reno, who was Party blind. They put in one of their cronies who will place Party loyalty above the law and go after Democratic leaders, Party officials, and voters who get in their way.

"It all depends on the legal language used to secure the earmark."

True. I would agree with that.

If it was Fed money for roads or bridges the answer would no. The Gov. alone does not have the authority to do that. At least they didn't when I worked for the State of Alaska and delt with Fed participating funds. The Alaska's Dept of Transportaion was threatened at one time (1980) that all future funding would be cut off if it used dedicated Highway monies for other projects. And only narrowly avoided a complete cutoff on one occassion because DOT promised to repay the funds the State had misappropriated prior to that. (They got caught charging the fed for $$ spent on other things which where then billed against fed project numbers)

Anyway, when I worked for AKDOT the fed didn't just give us the cash, they dedicated certain monies and they were basically billed for their portion of the project by the State as it went along. At the thime the fed paid 90 to 95 cents on the dollar, depending on the project. Things may have changed of course. But I don't think they changed that much. I seriously doubt that the fed would give anyone 350 million or so dollars and let them do anything they wanted with it.

She is knowingly deceiving voters. I think is obvious how corrupt she is and it is pretty sad that people in our country don't want to know the truth about what her beliefs are and what her real record is. They just have to make ignorant comments like '"oooh, look how scared the dems are!" Are they serious? Of course we are scared of someone who lies being in the white house. Haven't they had enough?

The sad truth is that for now it doesn't matter that the ebay story and the bridge to nowhere are b.s. The truthiness of the mccain-palin campaign makes bush-cheney look like washington-adams.

The only way out: beat them. (oh, and make sure steve schmidt never works in politics again)

Too bad the one person who "gets" to ask questions of her, Charlie Gibson, will likely only get a short interview segment, in which it will be hard to ask follow-up questions. If he even asks about this, I imagine it will be something along the lines of, "You've received a lot of criticism for claiming you told Congress 'thanks, but no thanks' on the Bridge to Nowhere. What do you say to that criticism?"

Then, she will explain how she initially thought the project was "important," but when costs began to rise, she just couldn't in good conscience stay in support of it, even though she knew that would be an unpopular decision for her constituency. But she does what's right, even when it's not popular.

End of questioning on bridge to nowhere. No follow up asking:
*But why did you vocally defend such projects and say Washington didn't understand the importance of these funding proposals?
*Why do you claim that you said, "Thanks, but no thanks," when you actually said, "Thanks"? Didn't you only stop the project once you realized that Alaskans, rather than Congressional funding, would have to pay for the rest of the bridge?
*Why did you continue to get funds and build the road to nowhere, which leads to the bridge that you claim is unnecessary?
*If you think earmark spending is wrong, why did you get $27 million in earmarks while mayor? What did you use those funds for exactly?

Me too. Even more than 2004 when I just figured Bush would win.

Cost of living is different, like in the US, depending on where you plan to live. But they have their own problems right now with Conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper, who just adores Bush and his policies. Although an election was called recently for October 14th, it is unlike he will lose to the Liberals, and they will continue to have a Bush style conservative government there for the next 4-5 years.

Better stay in the good old USA and fight for Obama. Canada can’t do anything for you that you can’t do for yourself by helping to bring in the change America needs. If McCain should win, then running to Canada won’t be the answer because Harper will just follow McCain down that same slippery slope. So, do everything you can and make sure that Obama has a great shot at the prize, and then maybe you won’t need to leave the country to live with Hope and dignity.

Palin is pork queen of Alaska. She's running against the bridge to nowhere but the corrupt state government that she heads pocketed the earmarked $223 million for the project. Dems should demand Gov. moose mom return the monies she and crooked indicted senator Stevens snookered the U.S. taxpayers out of.

Wasilla began with a 2 million (I think it was 2 mill) surplus in their treasury. When she left, Wasilla had a 20 million plus deficit. Wasilla????? And, by now most everyone knows she was for the Bridge to Nowhere before she was against it. She was also for the Road to Nowhere.

Interestingly I also find her voice has irritating overtones and a nasty streak.
