Russell Brand seemed a little out of place as the host at the MTV Video Music Awards.

Not because he's British or relatively unknown in America, as most of the chatter was about before Sunday night's show from Los Angeles.

It was because Brand injected the VMAs with blunt politics, self deprecation, unabashed sexuality, and, yes, plenty of off-color remarks.

Didn't he know where he was? The VMAs? In La-La Land?

No, this was no place to voice anything like an opinion on world affairs or joke about young Christian pop stars. This is a place to look cool and thank the almighty for the honor of little moon man statuettes.

Early in his opening monologue, Brand pleaded: "Please, America, elect Barack Obama. On behalf of the world."

Most of the crowd, seemingly caught of guard, cheered, though at least a few pop stars didn't. The camera caught Britney Spears _ who in 2003 said citizens should "just trust our president" _ sitting quietly.

Partisanship, of course, can hurt sales. But Brand was refreshingly ignorant of many of the concerns that keep the lips of American pop stars zipped. For good measure _ and surely stepping over the line _ Brand referred to President Bush as "that retarded cowboy fellow."

After all, Brand has built his image on his candor and edginess. He's well-known across the pond as a standup comic, TV show host and radio DJ _ but more so as an outlandish and hedonistic figure who speaks unabashedly about his prior drug and sex addictions.

Brand was a surprise choice as host for MTV for the 25th anniversary of the VMAs, and the gig was clearly meant to brighten his star in the U.S. After a supporting role in this spring's "Forgetting Sarah Marshall," he's got several prominent film roles in the works.

"I'm famous in the United Kingdom," he insisted, as a way to help explain himself and his rock star hairstyle. "My persona don't really work without fame. Without fame, this haircut could be mistaken for mental illness."

Sashaying around the stage in black leather, heeled shoes and snake skin scarf, Brand seemed to censor himself even less as the night wore on.

He frequently seemed baffled by young America pop culture. Introducing the stars of the upcoming film "Twilight," based on the vampire books, Brand exclaimed, "These books are bloody popular, these `Twilight' books."

Again and again, Brand _ a confessed former sex addict _ poked fun at young sex and abstinence. Speaking of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's daughter's boyfriend and would-be father, Levi Johnston, Brand sympathized with him: "That is the safe sex message of all time. Use a condom or become a Republican!

Brand clearly angered some in attendance when he repeatedly joked about the Jonas Brothers, the sons of a pastor, all of whom wear purity rings as a symbol of their vow not to have premarital sex. At one point, Brand brandished one as if he had won it from a Jonas brother.

"American Idol" champ Jordin Sparks defended them: "I just wanna say, it's not bad to wear a promise ring because not every guy and a girl wants to be a slut, OK?"

Brand responded by apologizing, before slyly offending again by alluding to R. Kelly in an unprintable joke (like many of his).

Perhaps summing up his perspective, he explained, "A bit of sex occasionally never hurt anybody."

Brand surely won at least as many enemies as fans on Sunday night. But in contrast to some of the personality-less pop stars this "American Idol"-crazy country has been producing lately, an import was a welcome change.

But I do think put on a platform as he was, it would have been almost criminal not voice his opinions on the way your country is run. When he said “The rest of the world pleads you to vote for Obama” It’s the truth I no you Americans love your way and are very proud but American people don’t event make up an 8th of the worlds population.
The world is a huge place and I’ve done a lot of travelling and the general opinion of America is not good. From Africa to Asia back to Europe we watch in astonishment as a “retarded cowboy” runs the western world. There’s a horrible statistic that less then half Americans own a passport!!!!
So I’m aware that opinions like those of Russell Brand are probably rarely heard on your shores but believe me everyone I no and have met feels the same way.
The Roman Empire fell after thousands of years due to lack of communication and falling out of touch with the rest of the world and if a change isn’t made soon yours we fall after just 50 years. Sorry but the truth ........

“Hang on aren’t we supposed to be the uptight ones?”

I’m English and find it hard to believe that people across the pond don’t understand that art/music/film and comedy should define a generation and not hide away in colourful meaningless silence. I mean this is America isn’t it? Not china?.

First of all Russell Brand is liked in the UK but not loved he’s far from a hero and just because he hosted an over hyped awards ceremony does not mean we like him any more than we did.

A broken record...

Encouraging Americans to ask for some "change" is nothing new for the Democratic Party.

"We the Victims," right?

I don't know what the Dems would talk about if they weren't always blaming everybody else, and picking on people because of their personal convictions.

You commented about the "hypocritical" nature of some on the religious right. I concede that you are correct about some of your allegations.

But be honest...double-standards and hypocrisy aren't confined to any one/single political movement. We're all talking, yet NOBODY (R's and D's alike) seems to be doing ANYTHING progressive these days.

My biggest complaint about Obama is not in his intent to bring change. But will he really bring it? I doubt anyone can/will.

Yet lately, the only message Mr. Obama and the Dem's bring to the table is in comparing McCain to George Bush. "A vote for McCain is a vote to keep George Bush in office."

Let it go. If Bush is such a non-factor in political progression these days (as you claim), then why not let him go? He's not running, and playing on personal anger and emotions about Bush to defeat McCain is a weak approach at best.

Your own party is responsible for keeping Bush and his policies alive and well. I guess once January rolls around, you'll continue to blame his ghost for the haunted house that can't be fixed, no matter how much "change" you say you're going to bring.

"That is the safe sex message of all time. Use a condom or become a Republican!
- British Comedian Russell Brand (brilliantly funny).

I think the Obama/Biden campaign should use it........it is hillarious - just like Obama's remark , "You can put lipstick on a pig, but its still a pig!" Brilliant. If Palin can call herself a dog (pitbull with lipstick) - what's the big deal?

We had to listen to her smear Obama with snide and sarcastic remarks; giving up a "Obama Roast" to the RNC as she served him on a platter (and not one MEDIA person said anything about how unethical or unappealing this was not only as a woman in politics but for our country too).

No one forgets anything. At the RNC, we listened to all of her lies - spewing out of her mouth with a smile. The Republicans hit a all-time low. They unleashed a right-wing, ego-centric, religious zealot that evidently believes that she has been elected Queen and we no longer can have an opinion about anything because of her sex.

Comedians, Actors, Singers and Everyone Else that has a voice that can be heard including "All Democratic Bloggers" and "Community Organizers".......SPEAK LOUD and CLEAR and let the Republican Party know that their pathetic and sexiest antics are going to boomerang.......

Work the next 6 weeks and make sure that everyone registers and VOTES for the Democratic party who began the slogan for "Change".....

So Jordin Sparks thinks anyone who has sex before marriage is a slut? Funny how not having sex is a more important "moral and value" than not going to war. False prophets, the whole lot of them.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 07:04 PM on 09/10/2008

Perhaps "not going to war" to dethrone a ruthless dictator who endorsed the murder of his own people and deprive men, women, and children of basic human rights is the "moral and value" of which you speak.

http://history1900s.about.com/od/saddamhussein/a/husseincrimes.htm

False prophets??? Are you really trying to justify your argument by playing the "hypocrite" card? Geeez...I don't think Ms. Sparks claimed to be innocent and without blame of her own. She was simply making a statement defending their stance on morality. No harm in that when a few kids decide to take a stand, and are getting thrashed by a clown looking to pick on somebody who has a little more backbone than he does.

Then again, based on your statements regarding "not going to war," I wouldn't expect you to denounce any form of bullying...whether by an international madman upon defenseless people, or by an international bozo upon a group of conscientious teenagers.

Russell Brand is funny and irreverent. I am ashamed to be an American with some of these hateful posts. The Huffington Post has been invaded by Republicans who want to bamboozle us for another 8 years. Snake Oil anyone? These folks sell it !

He's British and probably drunk most of the time. No need to write an article about him sucking at the VMAs, who cares. He'd probably sit with Bush and down a fifth. He's thumbs up for Barack because Britain is still mad over former PM Tony Blair being Bush's puppet. Ignore this ignorant Brit and laugh at his movies and interviews, and, his comments on anything political should be ignored and, if he keeps it up, he'll end up in not that many Hollywood movies. He's not talented, just a thin weird haired Brit who happens to sometimes say something stupid that ends up sounding, by chance, sometimes funny. Next.

To be honest sweetie i dont think Russell Brand could give a flying **** about wether Blair was Bush's puppet.......Which is exactly how a large majority of the British public feel.

I think he just found it hilarious how serious you lot seem to take it, and found the perfect way to WIND YOU UP! Ha ha.

Yet another example of MTV's true anti-Americanism coming front and center. They should be ashamed that they allowed such garbage, whether they care for Bush or not (obviously they don't). Still, to allow hate speech (the "R word") to be used as "entertainment and humor" to describe an American President is evidence that the exec's running MTV are still trapped in the same immature pre-teen mindset as their primary audience.

I respect the British, but as for the "Redcoat" Russell BLAND, he'll ride these jokes through the election, and his short career will meet the same fate as those long-forgotten entertainers who could only get a rise through similar nonsense. He'll be forgotten soon enough...oh wait, MTV already invited him back for another "go" next year. Wow, what will he ever use for material then???

Maybe he'll earn his rightful spot next to Max Headroom and Beavis and Butthead...true icons of the entertainment/humor industry.
