Russell Brand seemed a little out of place as the host at the MTV Video Music Awards.

Not because he's British or relatively unknown in America, as most of the chatter was about before Sunday night's show from Los Angeles.

It was because Brand injected the VMAs with blunt politics, self deprecation, unabashed sexuality, and, yes, plenty of off-color remarks.

Didn't he know where he was? The VMAs? In La-La Land?

No, this was no place to voice anything like an opinion on world affairs or joke about young Christian pop stars. This is a place to look cool and thank the almighty for the honor of little moon man statuettes.

Early in his opening monologue, Brand pleaded: "Please, America, elect Barack Obama. On behalf of the world."

Most of the crowd, seemingly caught of guard, cheered, though at least a few pop stars didn't. The camera caught Britney Spears _ who in 2003 said citizens should "just trust our president" _ sitting quietly.

Partisanship, of course, can hurt sales. But Brand was refreshingly ignorant of many of the concerns that keep the lips of American pop stars zipped. For good measure _ and surely stepping over the line _ Brand referred to President Bush as "that retarded cowboy fellow."

Story continues below

After all, Brand has built his image on his candor and edginess. He's well-known across the pond as a standup comic, TV show host and radio DJ _ but more so as an outlandish and hedonistic figure who speaks unabashedly about his prior drug and sex addictions.

Brand was a surprise choice as host for MTV for the 25th anniversary of the VMAs, and the gig was clearly meant to brighten his star in the U.S. After a supporting role in this spring's "Forgetting Sarah Marshall," he's got several prominent film roles in the works.

"I'm famous in the United Kingdom," he insisted, as a way to help explain himself and his rock star hairstyle. "My persona don't really work without fame. Without fame, this haircut could be mistaken for mental illness."

Sashaying around the stage in black leather, heeled shoes and snake skin scarf, Brand seemed to censor himself even less as the night wore on.

He frequently seemed baffled by young America pop culture. Introducing the stars of the upcoming film "Twilight," based on the vampire books, Brand exclaimed, "These books are bloody popular, these `Twilight' books."

Again and again, Brand _ a confessed former sex addict _ poked fun at young sex and abstinence. Speaking of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's daughter's boyfriend and would-be father, Levi Johnston, Brand sympathized with him: "That is the safe sex message of all time. Use a condom or become a Republican!

Brand clearly angered some in attendance when he repeatedly joked about the Jonas Brothers, the sons of a pastor, all of whom wear purity rings as a symbol of their vow not to have premarital sex. At one point, Brand brandished one as if he had won it from a Jonas brother.

"American Idol" champ Jordin Sparks defended them: "I just wanna say, it's not bad to wear a promise ring because not every guy and a girl wants to be a slut, OK?"

Brand responded by apologizing, before slyly offending again by alluding to R. Kelly in an unprintable joke (like many of his).

Perhaps summing up his perspective, he explained, "A bit of sex occasionally never hurt anybody."

Brand surely won at least as many enemies as fans on Sunday night. But in contrast to some of the personality-less pop stars this "American Idol"-crazy country has been producing lately, an import was a welcome change.

Brittany was asked later what she thought of him insulting her Bush. While chomping on her gum she drawled, "I don't like it either. In fact I shaved it off last year".

When supporting a candidate who is running against a guy who's VP choice has a child with Down's Syndrome, it's probably not a great idea to refer to the sitting president as "retarded".

What the heck does a baby with down syndrome has to do with anything. A child with Asthma, a child with Juvenile diabetes, a child who is hearing impaired, a child who is born blind are all children with disabilities, so why should her baby be any more special than any child with a disability. People keep their children how are mental challenged, so her baby isn't any more special than any other child with a disability. They are trying to fool America by bringing that baby out and showing it to the world to distract people from the real issued. There is nothing special about that baby, my cousin just had a baby that has down syndrome and my friend has a baby that also has down syndrome and we treat them like the rest of the kids in the family because we don't want them to think they are different and they are doing just fine, this crap isn't going to work.

It wasn't my intention for my comment to be taken as support for Palin as VP. Her child does not make her qualified for VP. I have a special needs child, and I am certainly not qualified to be VP. I don't feel that it makes me a better mother, a better person or a better citizen. My post-comment reference to special-needs is the needs, not the child, and - yes - any child who has a serious medical disorder has special needs. This election should be about issues, not any single person. However, I think that when people in Hollywood use the term "retarded" cavalierly, knowing the history of the word, knowing that one VP choice has a child with a genetic syndrome, and then claim that they support the candidate that I support, it bothers me, and I worry about the effect it might have on other voters.

YOu forget, you're talking about democrats and libtards here. You know, the ones who thought it was funny for George Clooney to make fun of Charlton Heston's Alzheimers and who said nothing about Michael Moore making jokes about the deaths and destruction caused by Hurricane Katrina on Keith Olbermann's show, yet get serious when Olbermann criticizes the 9/11 tribute video shown during the Republican National Convention.
Look up Democrat in the dictionary and you'll see a referral to the word "hypocrite".

But see, to the lefties, liberals and neodems in our country it's OK to use that kind of language as long as its about someone they dont like. Remember when George Clooney made fun of Charlton Heston's Alzheimer's? He never apologized and even tried to justify his statement. Not one peep from the left.

Russell told the truth and made some at this boring show very uncomfortable. They didn't know whether to clap, laugh or protect their careers. The camera caught some pretty stoic looks on some of those faces. Of course the most shocked looks came when Britney was announced as winner of all of her pity awards.

"btw, there is no such thing as a neodem. but you already knew that, didn't you?"
Actually there is. For you youngns who don't remember the 60's and 70's, the old democratic party was all about segregation and keeping the blacks in their place in areas like the deep south and the northeast. (remember, Abraham Lincoln was NOT a democrat, he was a conservative!) as well as less government and less taxes.
Today's democrat is all about segregation but now it's by party lines and keeping whites in their place by taking away their freedom of speech and expression while also wanting the government to regulate EVERYTHING and raise taxes to provide so-called "free" programs. Basically, the neodem is really a socialist in denial.

I'll bet you dollars to donuts that Keith Olbermann will have Brand on his show to weigh in on the presidential race. I mean, why not? He's already had propaganda maker Michael Moore on his show to WEIGH in despite the fact that Moore publicaly and very vocally supported both losers of the past two elections and has absolutely no credentials that make him a political expert in any way, shape or form!

THE VMA'S BROUGHT IT TO YOU "OLD SCHOOL" 1997 style this year with Britney, Christina, Kid Rock, and leather bodysuits. England’s Russell Brand made his American TV debut with just enough PrObama cheers and Jonas Brothers virginity jokes to remind us it’s 2008.

Russell Brand is funny like a drunk uncle who embarrasses you in front of friends.
He has the hair of Amy Winehouse with the charm of Courtney Love. The offensive English comedian (who has been to rehab for sex addiction among other things) filled his American TV debut with repeated virginity jokes about the Jonas Brothers who were clearly unamused. Brand also got political, endorsing Obama, calling George Bush a “retarded cowboy fella,” and joking about the unfortunate luck of Bristol Palin’s boyfriend.

Well , color me astonished ...

BUT the people who are raising the hype value of a Palin press interview may be setting up the Republicans for a HUGE gain in voter confidence considering the fact that she is NOT that bad at interviews ...

Granted she may NOT be good at Foreign Policy but when it comes to Energy and Domestic Issues she seems to know something ...

Personally I have this feeling the whole MSM in America are setting us up for another GOP victory this fall and that is royally pissing me off ...

Brand was fantastic and said exactly what the rest of the world is thinking. He was hilarious. His comments on the Jonas brothers were hilarious. And, Brittany Spears, whose mother's new book said she had sex at 14, remember her lies about being a virgin-blah, blah, blah should look at her own house. Brand was right on, that doesn't mean you have to be a sex addict either, but waiting until marriage, that is a recipe for divorce if I ever heard of one. And, what about the shotgun marriage the republican zealots believe in. The hypocrisy coming from the so-called religious zealots who are trying to push their religious beliefs down our throats should practice what they preach and leave the rest of us alone. It is the hypocrisy period. What he said about the so-called fiance was also true--he is definately being roped into this marriage, especially after what he said on his myspace page about not wanting children. I hadn't heard Brand before, but think he was a refreshing change. It needs to be kept private-I am sick of these religious zealots pushing it on the rest of us. And, if I have to hear another one of these big-fake breasted, slutty looking, pussycat dolls thanking God in their phony speeches I think I will smash my television set. I am sure God or the Goddess could care less if these idiots win a moonman statue from MTV.
