***Update*** Michael Silver of Yahoo Sports has sources saying that Brady has torn his ACL and is expected to miss the rest of the season:

New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady is expected to miss the rest of the 2008 season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, according to a source familiar with the injury.

While New England coach Bill Belichick said in his postgame press conference that he had no update on the status of Brady's injury, two sources indicated it involved serious damage to the knee.

"It's bad," a team source said. "We're going to have to play without him."

Earlier AP story

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — Tom Brady went from the disappointment of a Super Bowl loss to the devastation of an injury that could keep him out for the rest of the season.

After missing the entire preseason with an unspecified foot injury, Brady left Sunday's season opener against the Kansas City Chiefs in the first quarter after being hit on the left leg by Chiefs safety Bernard Pollard. Coach Bill Belichick provided no information on the injury, but Pollard had a diagnosis of his own.

"He was in a lot of pain," he said. "When you hear a scream, you know that."

Brady was the NFL MVP last season after throwing for a record 50 touchdowns and leading the Patriots through a perfect regular season to the brink of their fourth Super Bowl title in eight years. But New England lost its chance at an unprecedented 19-0 record when the Giants won the championship, 17-14.

Any chance at redemption might have disappeared when Brady, who has started 128 consecutive games, went to the turf clutching his left knee midway through the first quarter. After being tended to on the field, he walked off, limping, between two trainers.

Brady, 31, went to the locker room and wasn't seen again on the sideline as backup Matt Cassel led the Patriots to a 17-10 victory. The two-time Super Bowl MVP was not available for comment after the game, and Belichick said he had nothing to add to the in-game announcement that it was a knee injury.

"They're looking at him, doing some tests on him, so I don't have any information there," the coach said, cracking a smile as he added, "doubt anybody's interested."

The Chiefs also lost their starting quarterback when Brodie Croyle was sacked in the third quarter. The team said he had a bruised right shoulder and he was replaced by Damon Huard.

Brady was 7-for-11 for 76 yards, completing a 28-yard pass to Randy Moss on the play in which he was injured. Moss fumbled the ball away when he was tackled; the Patriots forced Kansas City to punt, then Cassel came in for New England.

"Since I've been here and been around Tom, he's always popped back up," Cassel said. "I didn't know (how serious it was). I just buckled my chinstrap and the guys rallied around me. I felt their support."

Cassel took over at his 2 yard-line and, after two handoffs nearly netted the Chiefs a safety, completed his first pass to Moss for a 51-yard gain. Cassel, Brady's backup for the past three years, finished the 98-yard drive with a 10-yard touchdown pass to Moss that gave New England a 7-0 lead.

"This is something I've been preparing for for a long time," said Cassel, who threw just 33 passes while backing up Heisman Trophy winners Carson Palmer and Matt Leinart at Southern Cal. "It's not something I expected to come up on opening day."

A former fourth-stringer who was the 199th overall selection in the 2000 draft, Brady himself took over at quarterback when longtime starter Drew Bledsoe sustained a life-threatening chest injury in a 2001 game against the New York Jets. Brady led the Patriots to their first NFL title that year, another in 2003 and another in 2004.

In the process, Brady has become one of the league's biggest stars and a crossover cover boy who has met the Pope and the president, dated actresses and supermodels and rewrote one of the NFL's most coveted records.

Last year, while leading New England to a 16-0 regular season, Brady set a record with 50 touchdown passes and improved his overall record as a starter to 100-27 _ the best in the Super Bowl era. The Patriots blew a chance at an unprecedented 19-0 season and a fourth NFL title with a 17-14 loss in February's Super Bowl to the New York Giants.

Brady did not play in four exhibition games this summer _ all of them Patriots losses _ while trying to recover from a right foot injury.

"He's the face of the New England Patriots, and Tom being who he is it kind of hurts, to be honest with you," said Moss, who caught 23 of Brady's TD passes in 2007, also a record. "I know the show must go on. Hopefully Matt Cassel is ready to step in. I know the team is ready to embrace him and let him lead us."

My Condolences to Mr. Brady, and to fans of the Patriots.

However, now the fans of this team get to find out just how good Bill Belichick is as a coach. How good will he be at managing the egos on this team if (or when) the wins get more difficult, and without the team's onfield leader?

If Bill Belichick can pull off a winning season and playoff success with one of the keystones of his team out for the count,... THEN he should be considered one of the best coaches of his time.

Signed
*A Hard-core Bears fan*

The Patriots will have a tough time winning without Brady, but they could really make a run of it if they pull themselves together and cheat 110% harder. GO PATS!

Whew, now we don't have to hear story after story after story about New England's second attempt at the perfect season. The bent-over-backwards reporting and worship from last season was almost unbearable.

The funny part is that I am usually so anti-Brady that all of my friends today expected me to be reveling in this news, like it gives me strength or happiness or something. To be honest, it's really just "OK, that's that. Moving on." I can't say that I feel bad for him, but I don't feel good about him being injured.

I do believe in karma, though, so the worst I could say is that he brought it on himself, possibly. But even that ascribes motive to karma, so it might not even be the case.

Meanwhile, my team started off nice enough. It took the fielding of the Eagles second string to allow St Louis to put up 3 lousy points. Mwuhehehe, 38-3, Eagles!

Leave the pregnant girlfriend and not take responsibility until your current supermodel girlfriend tells you to? Karma? It's only gonna get worse. Payback is a .....!

Do you know for a fact that he "didn't take responsibility" until Gisele said something? I belive Tom and Bridget had already broken up when she discovered she was pregnant. So that blows your theory.

And as for Karma . . . injuries happen all the time to all players, considering how long Tom has played to have not had a serious injury until know means it was just his time, so to speak.

Sounds more like you have/had something to be worried about Karma.

I tore my ACL playing tennis. It is not a career ending injury. It is a season ender for sure, requiring surgery and extensive rehab. Interestingly, my surgeon said that repaired ACL's are stronger than uninjured ones. My range of motion and stress tests proved this to be the case with my knee as well.

The Patriots barely pulled that one out. Cassels needs to be developed since Brady hurt that knee. I don't see the Pats exploding this season like they did last year. Too bad. I like their team and Tom Brady.

This really shows how amazing Favre's streak is at not missing a game at QB since 1992. You have to have alot of luck because these are just fluke injuries, and pretty much every great QB goes down once in their career to an ACL. I don't think the NFL can do anything about this cause it was a legal hit, and when the QB's step up in the pocket they are so vulnerable to that hit below the knee. Who would have thought after the Pats won their 3rd superbowl in February 2005, they would never win another one after that even after going undefeated in a regular season last year.

We've got Brett Favre! Brett Favre! Did I say Brett Favre?

I think Brady was injured last year prior to the Superbowl and I don't think he ever properly recovered or had it taken care of during the off season and he may have had trouble getting into shape as a result. Hence the torn ligament. He's not a complainer so we'll never know.

I'm not sorry Brady is out for the season. Alright so I'm in the tank for the Jets. Sue me. I've been waiting since Superbowl III.

they're still the jets...you will continue to wait for that superbowl win

You could at least be sorry that he's injured. You need to say that.

Brady's absence will make for a more interesting season. It is too bad that he's injured, but I didn't watch them at all (except in the SB), because Brady was so perfect it was boring. Colts too.

I'm in Wisconsin, and a lot of people here, including some in the media, were visibly getting tired of Favre's drama queen crap. Admittedly, seeing him play for another team makes him watchable again, at least for now.

I really think you need to say that you're sorry that Brady is injured, lest we see you as just another heartless New Yorker.

And winning isn't everything. If Favre had come back to the Packers I wouldn't have watched because it would have been boring, as in SOS. Sometimes watching good quarterbacks trumps having one's supposed home team win all the time.

Pfffffft. Give me a break. I'm not sorry. Is Brady a great quarterback? Absolutely. Am I glad he's not playing? No doubt. Will the Jets make it to Superbowl 43? Not likely. But that's the breaks in football. Am I heartless? Alright I feel something for the pain he feels, but beyond that this is the NFL. Moving on.

Not so fast, because if your a Jets fan the you need to be very, very, very, afraid of the Buffalo Bills. Scarppy defensively, capable on offense, and the best special teams in the NFL. So just cuz Brady went down, everyone is quick to concede the division to the Bills, I would be cautiously optimistic if I were you, cuz those Bills from upstate NY could cause a serious problem.

I really have thought that Brady was losing his drive for the game. Doubt he was out of shape and that led to his injury but it will be interesting to see if he comes back as soon as possible and how his recovery progresses.

Nothing to do with his shape. It was a pretty normal type of way for a QB to get injured. He stepped into his throw and the safety rolled into his leg at the same time.

I hate to see any player go down with an injury. It's doubly nauseous when one of the all-time best QB's has suffered a potentially career threatening injury in the midst of his prime. Let's hope that Brady can rehabilitate and be a full capacity need season.

And a final word to the minority of "fans" who are mocking Brady's injury or are making pleasure out of it: Consider professional help, fast. You are sick S-O-B's.

I blame this on the NFL. If they hadn't cracked down on this, then Brady would have had 6 months to study the signs, signals and footage, and during the game the computer would have told him in his headset what defensive play was called, who was coming in hot, and how many microseconds he had to get rid of the ball and lay down before anyone could lay a finger on him. Shame that in the first game of the honesty era, the Pats lose their biggest star. Looks like the cheating allegations were finally proven after all.

I'm a Giants fan. Unlike the average Jets fan I'm not a rabid Brady hater. But as a NYer it is my solemn duty to never, ever root for a team from New England.

I still hope the reports are wrong, I hate to see any player go down with a serious injury. And I have to give Brady his props, he's a great QB.
